I noticed on 9News Sydney tonight the World Cup only got a passing mention with a brief report about Cristiano Ronaldo’s last game. The USA wasn’t even mentioned only that Belgium will play in the quarter finals.
Because Nine must protect their major investment. They can’t be seen promoting any other code…except for the EPL of course.
The World Cup normally gets good coverage on Nine News tonight. Perhaps just gazumped by the NRL rights and Origin news tonight
Argentina mounted an epic comeback from 0-2 down halfway through the second half, to beat Egypt 3-2 in Atlanta. Lionel Messi scored his team’s second goal (after missing a penalty earlier in the match) while his counterpart Mo Salah went goalless.
There was another VAR controversy in the match. Al Jazeera reports:
Egypt will forever be remembered for giving Argentina a run for their money, but with a sense of injustice after a video assistant referee (VAR) decision ruled out a Mostafa Ziko goal when Egypt were winning 1-0, although he later found the back of the net again to make it 2-0.
Ziko was at the end of a brilliant run by Egypt as Salah laid up the ball for him in front of goal and the number 11 slotted it in from close range. He then launched a wild celebration, taking off his shirt on a run, but Egypt’s joy turned into sorrow minutes later as VAR spotted a foul in the build-up to the goal, deeming it void.
UPDATE: Switzerland are through to the final eight after defeating Colombia 4-3 in penalties. The two teams failed to score in both regulation time and extra time.
For a team that’s done so well this World Cup (including eliminating us), their demeanour and arrogance after their defeat is really risking their reputation being torn apart by this little ego trip. Sore losers.

Following Egypt’s loss to Argentina, the Egyptian Football Association has lodged a complaint to FIFA demanding action, including booting the French referee and the video referees involved out of the tournament.

Typical Channel 7 bulls*8t overkill! The World Cup is NOT in chaos because Egypt make demands. The quarterfinals will go on, then semis and the final. They’ve probably been encouraged by trump’s intervention but Egypt is not the US with it’s corrupt cheating President.

France are through to the World Cup semi-finals with a 2-0 win over Morocco in Boston. Mbappe scored on the hour mark followed by Dembele six minutes later.
2-0 was also the scoreline of France’s defeat of Morocco when they met in the 2022 World Cup semi-final in Qatar.

Balogun’s red card was explicitly classified as serious foul play following VAR review. However, the Disciplinary Committee not only failed to impose the additional match penalty, it suspended implementation for one year on probation, after Trump called the FIFA President.
In contrast, England’s Quansah received the minimum two-match ban for serious foul play against Mexico.
We now have more controversy, a complete lack of consistency and integrity, new precedents, widespread criticism and scepticism, and overt politicisation of on-field decisions.
And this comes after the VAR ruled out an Egyptian goal in their round of 16 match, then failed to apply exactly the same process for a penalty for Egypt, fuelling further perceptions of bias.
Unfortunately, once one nation is given special treatment, the supposed independence of the process is fatally undermined, every decision thrown into doubt, and trust erased.
The beautiful game deserves far better.

Spain are moving on to the Semi Finals with a 2-1 victory over Belgium.
That sets up the first semi final matchup with France v Spain on Wednesday 5am AEST. This will be good.
