The Coalition just gets its priorities absolutely wrong. The $172 million for full body scanners at domestic airport terminals and additional police and Border Force officers is sufficient enough to restore indexation for ABC funding for the next six years.

Centre Alliance MP Rebekha Sharkie and Labor MPs Justine Keay, Josh Wilson and Susan Lamb have also resigned from Federal Parliament.
Surely there must be a referendum during the next federal election regarding section 44 of the Australian Constitution. If it is not repealed, future generations of Australians who have a foreign heritage won’t be able to stand for Parliament.

The rules are very clear now. There is absolutely no need to change the Constitution.

It’s unnecessary though. The law should just be changed. No need for a referendum.

It can’t be - a referendum is required to change section 44 of the Constitution

Yes they will. They will just have to renounce their citizenship.

Its a pity Rebekha Sharkie is out. She has done great things for her area.

I say no keep it as it is. If they haven’t renounced their citizenship, then that’s their problem not ours. It would teach others to do it way before you nominate for your electorate.

But some countries such as China won’t allow their people to renounce their citizenship even though (for example) they have moved to Australia and are naturalised. That’s why section 44 must be repealed to allow these people to keep their foreign citizenship AND stand for Parliament.

don’t run for parliament then.

Well that’s not really fair.

I agree with you i just don’t think the public is going to be for another referendum. Especially one likely to fail.

Like that $100M piece of shit called a ‘plebiscite’ that Malcolm had to wipe his towel over… That was well worth it. We knew the answer from Day 1.

its like who even wants to be politicians these days, as people are sick and tired of the infighting that goes on between the political parties. Its not something that I would want to do, where by to sit in parliament and be away from home for a considerable amount of the year.

Never. Ever. The ABC will never be commercialised so the neo cons can keep dreaming.

In that case it’s all reasonable steps of something. Dastyari wasn’t able to renounce his Iranian citizenship.

But I agree with you on the need to change. Problem is Australians hate referenda and are loathe to pass them.

It’s “all reasonable steps” so that’s no problem. A letter to China renouncing citizenship is all that’s required. Not that hard. The Australian people will never in a million years vote to repeal s44. It’s just never going to happen.

Good. Nobody asked you to run anyway.
