Federal Politics

I am predictably left wing socially. Economic conservative in that I oppose privatisation and prefer some amount of regulation and state intervention in the market.

I consider my self in the middle, only ever voted ALP once, in 2007, Howard really had to go, safe Lib seat (Kooyong) but wanted to send a message. Doesn’t mean I always vote Libs either, usually seek out an independent with similar views to me.

Responses to my posts on the Heradl Sun articles and Bolt blog suggest I am a hard left leftard from leftville. Shows a sad indictment on where Australian politics has moved recently.

I think I’d consider myself a traditional Labor voter, but fuck me they’ve been such incompetent idiots over the past few years. NSW Labor are run by a pack of populist, anti-development, car-loving, Western Sydney-centric idiots, and Federal Labor were total buffoons to kick Rudd out. I’m not too keen on Shorten because he’s one of those faceless men who kicked a popular PM out.

Greens seem to have some reasonable policies, but a lot of them just follow pure green-left ideology and live in fantasy land. The Greens transport policy for the last NSW election, for example, had them obviously planning the figures out on a napkin.

For example, they wanted to re-open a regional railway line of about 50km length to passenger service from Casino to Lismore. Anyone with common sense would know that NO ONE would use this. They said it would cost $50 million to re-open this line, which is TOTAL bullshit. You’d need to completely rebuild that line and its bridges in order for it to become safe again, so the cost would probably be close to 10-20x that.

These figures the quote all seem extremely low.

But I guess you don’t actually need to do anything if you’re never going to get into power…

I’m a teacher, I’m not supposed to have political views. :joy::joy::joy:

I’d call myself “bird’s arse” in terms of political views…you know, since birds have left and right wings…

Barnaby Joyce won today’s New England by-election fairly easily, and will return as Deputy Prime Minister perhaps as early as next week.

Will not return to the senate in 2018

Good riddance. He has seriously damaged Labor’s chances of winning the next federal election.

He will still be receiving the pay of a senator into 2018, with it being said Dastyari needs time to wrap up some electorate business and NSW Labor stating they will not be in a position to choose a replacement until after Christmas. Some members and senators caught up in the citizenship fiasco quit parliament within a day of announcing their decision. Why does it take Dastyari so long?

The High Court were expected to announce (confirm) the two new Senators for Tasmania today but have deferred until the end of January.

Former Tourism Minister, Richard Colbeck, was due to be allowed to replace Stephen Parry for the Liberal Party and Devonport Mayor, Steve Martin, was due to hear whether he would be eligible or not to replace Jacqui Lambie so it looks like things will continue into the new year. I heard Steve Martin on the radio a week or two back, if he’s allowed to go to the Senate and it’s occurs prior to March then voters in Devonport will have to have elections but if it’s after that date then it is only 6 months until the scheduled elections anyway so the Deputy would assume the role for the last few months.
It’s expected that Braddon MP Justine Keay will be referred to the High Court around February too when Parliament resumes and with the State Election in March, Devonport will have a lot of elections!

Kristina Keneally going crazy with the signs and balloons.
