Fast Food/Takeaways and Restaurants

I have had it in Dubai and it was extremely busy and expensive. I personally didn’t think it was worth it. If you want higher end and pricey American food, then go for it.

As an Australian transplant in the States, can I give you some advice: don’t!

The bill won’t justify the food by a long shot. Find a local cheesecake place if that’s what you’re after. I can recommend Juniors in New York, but every big city will have one. Hell, get the frozen cheesecake from Trader Joe’s and you’ll be in the ballpark.

Aussie charcoal chicken chain El Jannah has been sold to New York billionaires for an unbelievable one billion dollars.

An Australian charcoal chicken chain started in Sydney by an immigrant Lebanese family has been snapped up by a New York investment company for almost $1billion.

Married couple Andre and Carole Estephan opened El Jannah as a single store beside a train station in Granville, in the city’s west, in 1998.

Has anyone tried El Jannah’s food, and how it tastes compared to other chicken outlets like KFC, RR or Oporto?

We don’t have any stores in the Newcastle area yet, but I’d like to try it next time I’m in Sydney if the reviews are favourable.

It’s Charcoal Chicken and they sell it with tubs of garlic sauce and have salads like tabouli.

So charcoal tastes better than Red Rooster rotisserie chickens and is similar to Oporto but they do chilli sauces.KFC does fried chicken and gravy so very different.

We have lots of independent charcoal chicken places in Sydney so I wouldn’t pick El Jannah first. Nieo’s Grille is a popular charcoal chicken restaurant/take away near my place. They do charcoal chickens and a Greek style lemon and herb charcoal chicken. They fo Greek saland and a huge range of other and roasted vegies. Plus, they do other grilled meats, fish, burgers and Greek dishes. Spoilt for choice.

and it tastes like Charcoal too…

It was so dry and horrible, compared to the local family one next door….

It’s not bad but overpriced but it is a very different style of chicken compared to Chargrill Charlie’s or Frango or the chicken you get from Woolworths and Coles. The chicken has a very smokey flavour to it.

El Jannah is just another chicken place to me. I actually find their menu fairly limited, almost everything comes with standard fries and there aren’t really any other options for sides or to modify things (there are some salads but apart from the basics like Tabouli and Coleslaw, they are more meal size salads).

I prefer chargrill Charlie’s where I can stack up on vege and more interesting salads, or even places like Oporto and Nando’s have a wide selection of sides to go with my chicken. I usually try to void just fries unless it’s a quick Maccas/HJ run, even sweet potato fries would be good.

Had a Henny Penny roast chicken roll (with gravy) this afternoon

As per my Red Rooster experience, it’s another place that likes giving out large brown paper bags with big chunks of serviettes in them (though no wet wipe sachets).

$2 cheaper than the RR roll, but smaller. Going inside their Edgeworth (Newcastle) store was like going back to the 80s, exposed brick walls inside and brown tiles and chairs everywhere. The menu board is still backlit plastic signs, no TV screens here.

Have added the unused serviettes to my “collection” that started during lockdown.

Didn’t know Henny Penny still existed. I thoughg thry had all been taken over by Red Roster (or was it Big Rooster back then?).

Still around though there aren’t as many Henny Penny outlets here as there used to be. My local Charlestown one closed down probably 7 years ago.

The roll I had was nice enough, but I preferred the RR roll I had a couple of weeks ago.

And I’d forgotten all about Big Rooster until you mentioned it!

My local Maccas (Melb metro) has had their M sign changed over to the newer version with just the golden arches with a plain red strip underneath about 2 weeks ago. I also saw on a FB post that McDonald’s in Hamilton (Vic) have had theirs changed over too this week. I’m assuming they are rolling this out across the country pretty quickly after all this time?

The cleanliness of a few places in recent times has gone into the toilet. I had dinner at the Hunter Street KFC last night before a show at the Civic Theatre. Their bins were full as a state school hat rack and the place looked like it hadnt had a clean in all day. There was stuff left on a nearby table.

Same seems to be with McDonald’s i have been to recently.

My locals are often like that at busy times.
They’ve added more work in the last few years with things like delivery (that adds a lot of overhead) but haven’t increased the staffing to suit.

Yeah that true. But this place you can only order via those touchscreens. I couldn’t tell how many were in the kitchen but you’d think they could at least have somebody on to at least sweep up and wipe tables down. Or at least rotate somebody to clean up every few hours.

7News Sydney yesterday had a report on Cherry’s Goods at Macquarie Centre, whose baked treats and drinks have become a viral sensation.

KFC has made a late substitution on its logo, benching the Colonel and introducing Travis Bucket-Head.

After his first test heroics (in Perth), Travis Bucket-Head will take over in-stadium visuals, ensuring our main man is providing a cheeky reminder of who ruined the Poms first week in the country. Fans at the Gabba can also score a limited run of KFC ‘Travis Bucket-Heads’ to wear, with the Colonel being replaced with, you guessed it, Travis Head.

A pop up Cookie Monster cafe has opened in Melbourne Central shopping centre, opposite the entrance to the train station. It takes up the space formerly occupied by Soul Origin.
