Digital TV Technical Discussion

How do you know the video quality is 4K and not 1080p?

Because they use the 4k watermark. Plus, the image will say HDR+ in Picture settings depending on what tv you have. My tv does that when watching 4k content. like others have said Binge also supports 4k on Firestick the easiest way to tell? Picture settings. It does also tell you straight away whether content is available in 4k. It’s no different to the way it works on other devices. I was using it for a few years when 4k wasn’t supported on there and it was never on there. I don’t think they would have it on there and promote it on a device that’s not supporting 4k.

Nine Melbourne has gone mostly MPEG-4.

Weirdly though, unlike in other cities where Nine have already made the change, Extra remains on MPEG-2.

I was wondering the same thing. Now only Sydney to upgrade.

Based on that website, Perth and Brisbane have all channels on MPEG-4 except 9SD on channel 91. From user posts, Adelaide have also kept 9Rush and Extra on MPEG-2 but they were also the first to make the switch.

Seems weird they would have a third option for Melbourne?

It’s a shame the 4 metro’s aren’t showing on the Intelsat 19 scan as we’d be able to confirm if that’s still the case in Adelaide. Not sure if Nine has stopped using it as their primary outhaul or if digital-bitrate.com doesn’t scan the entire bird properly.

Very strange indeed!

You would think that Nine would have a standard moving forward for all cities wouldn’t you.

As am I.

Not even going to try and estimate when they might do Sydney. A month perhaps would be my only guess.

Interesting move to have 10 drama being the one 10 hasn’t added - opting for Nickelodeon instead?
Guessing SNR, 10 & 10 comedy are all HD and Nick SD?

TV Tonight didn’t mention that some of those additional multi channels from Mt Alexander are coming from a lower powered transmitter.

Kind of an important fact to leave out of the story.

10 and 10 drama were already available. BAI’s communications on this are wrong.

Current Melbourne lineup. Great to see. Odd how Extra is MPEG2 still.

Nice to see 9Life going HD in Melbourne.

Wonder if Nine will clean up their LCNs to get rid of duplicates? I know that technically it doesn’t matter. But it would be easier for people who pick their way through using the channel up and down buttons.

Great! It’s time for Sydney now. Is every other city now HD?

In (almost) the words of Juan Antonio Samaranch… “the loser is … SYDNEY!!!”.

10 drama was part of the initial restorations IIRC.

What’s left to do at Mt Alexander?
Aren’t all channels back online now?
