Should 9Rush and 9Life go MPEG-4 HD only in metro areas? If it happens, then Channel 9 (main channel), 9Gem and 9Go! will only remain in MPEG-2 SD (for older TVs sold from 2009) and MPEG-4 HD (for TVs sold from 2014 present that have MPEG-4 HD), understood?

They should all be in MPEG4 HD without any SD channels.
Hopefully Nine switch over this year to match Seven.

MPEG 4 capable TVs were being sold well before 2014.

They probably aught to, but I’m also sure Nine probably enjoy having almost a monopoly on viewers with older sets.
Would these viewers be appealing to advertisers on the other hand…

I did notice the local chip shop (Adelaide) did start showing the rugby instead of the footy for a while before they renovated, so maybe there is something in it.

I’ve seen 2008 sets with MPEG-4. Before then it gets sketchy.

I bought a 32ā€ Samsung TV in Feb 2007 that handles MPEG-4. I can get all current channels with it.

I’m curious to know what percentage of TV sets can receive DVB-T2 4K in Australia. There really doesn’t seem to be much momentum towards this by the broadcasting industry and Govt.

As far as I’m aware the 4K trial didn’t result in actually formalising an Australian standard. So there might be a number of sets here with the European market in mind that support DVB-T2, but only as HD MPEG-4.

Indeed I’d guess that’s by far the most common TV on the market, with there being both DVB-T only sets and HEVC capable sets sold as well.

I don’t think we’ll ever see 4K on DVB (T or T2). It’s a nice to have, and in the advent of online streaming a ā€œnice to haveā€ can happily exist online only.

I’m hoping the FTA networks can add 4K streaming to their smart TV apps. Especially sport - 4K AFL and Cricket can exist on 7+ and similarly 4K NRL on 9Now. I wouldn’t expect a full time 4K stream of their linear channels, but for sports and special events- FTA networks should start pushing this.

Agree… too spectrum intensive… it’d take up the space of probably 4-5 HD channels… and a bit like DAB+ radio, our FTA broadcasters would appear to prefer to squeeze in more channels at the expense of quality (though not to the same degree as with digital radio thankfully).

The hams here in Melbourne have already transitioned to DVB-T2, and their UHF band is only a good 17MHz wide when you take out the car remotes on 433MHz.. It’s possible
