Nine really should be:
9/90 9HD 8/80 9HD/WIN
91 9GemHD 81 9GemHD
92 9Go!HD 82 9Go!HD
93 9Life 83 9Life
94 9Rush 94 WIN Gold
95 Extra 95 Extra
Not sure if all channels are mpeg 4 in tas they maybe, but only WIN carry multiple HD channels, 9, gem, go in HD
Seven only has 7Hd, no 7flix or 7bravo but they still carry Sbn tv religious channel. Hopefully they drop that in future and bring some of the other HD channels now it’s the same company as mainland.
TDT 10 jvc only has 10 in HD stuck in 5.1 Dolby fake sound for all content including ads.
ABC and sbs carry same HD as elsewhere.

Local Services usually appear on K/J 2, there is currently only one, being Wairarapa TV.
Nelson/Tasman have additional independent operator, Mainland TV, they use CH’s 26/27.
Oamaru used to have a local independent, 45 South TV, which closed-down permanently in December 2024.
That’s a good idea for Australia… make the SD channel 1 hour behind to virtually force any habitual SD viewers onto HD, and then switch that off.
Thanks for sharing that. I wondered what channels were on what multiplex. On my last trip to NZ, I was in Queenstown where there are no terrestrial FTA signals at all. I do know that the Freeview satellite service doesn’t do HD but the FTA channels that are usually in HD are actually in HD on Sky TV.
Very bad idea, these +1 or +2 channels are a waste of bandwidth. Can’t people watch programs they miss on the catch-up services instead? Make room instead for everything to be HD and get rid of SD altogether.
Yeah they are a huge waste. There’s no point in this day and age when streaming services let you catch up.
I feel for our friends across the ditch. It’s a really dreadful line up which is effectively a duopoly now (TV NZ and Sky).
One could argue NZ television in general had been woeful for decades. The dominance of TVNZ can not be underscored, more so it’s mandate to deliver a dividend to the State each year. As to why TVNZ One was never reformed into a public broadcaster similar to the ABC beats me and TVNZ 2 should have been sold off years ago while the state could get some money for it. Very doubtful they would get a sizeable return for selling it or TVNZ One either now, too late.
There are a few HD channels via Satellite now, since they swapped the old bird for another old bird last year. Not sure which ones, Lyngsat probably lists it.
A good balance I think for a FTA timeshift channel is 4seven (from Channel 4 UK) - not the exact same thing on delay, but a kind of ‘best of what you missed’.
Don’t Seven sort of do that now with 7Now on-line as a FAST channel? I know the other networks don’t.
Considering 7Now is playing the first episode of The 1% Club followed by a couple Holey Moley episodes I don’t think that’s what they’re going for.
Or 9Plus? ![]()
I don’t think it is a good idea to waste limited spectrum on timeshift channels (and shopping channels for that matter) while some services are still SD only. Best to make all existing services HD, get rid of SD duplicates where still available and be done with it.
Pretty sure 7Now still only exists to keep the trademark out of 7Eleven’s hands fully (although 7Eleven still use it for their delivery service) and that’s it.
In the UK
Worth noting that’s of viewers on satellite, not the general population. Swapping STBs is a smaller lift when you are already using a set top box as the way you watch TV anyway - they basically started removing channels 4 years back and had decent communication and even an equipment test channel.
They did a report with some options for the future over there, UK SPF Report: Future of the UHF band after 2034 - An analysis of options in the UK
Don’t think there’s been decisions yet, but signs point to a 2030 move to just “Freeview HD” - their DVB-T2 platform - and doing a restack/scale down of the number of multiplexes.
A chart in their report estimates 1 million UK households currently with exclusively DVB-T only receivers (eg SD only) - so would be about 3% right now, which is still good - but probably too significant of a number to move forward with.
Yep. I thought it would take at least 6 months.
The roads on Mt Alexander are now open. I’ll take some pics when I can, possibly tomorrow.
