Digital TV Technical Discussion

Yeah they’ve been changed now.

Just did a quick bitrate check on 7 Prime channels in Bendigo. These are total bitrate:
7HD - 5.9 mbps
7TwoHD - 4.8 mbps
7MateHD - 4.6 mbps
7BravoHD - 5.1 mbps
7Flix - 1.4 mbps
iShop - 2.2 mbps

All the HD channels were AC3 2.0 256kb/48khz audio
All the SD channels were AAC 2.0 256kb/48khz audio

I made some edits (inspect element) to mySwitch to change the logos so people actually know what channels they are getting.

15 HD channels in Sydney currently, although 7two will also become HD in the next month or so, after Brisbane.

Pretty good considering there were only 5 HD channels a decade ago and the main stations of Ten, Seven, Nine and ABC were only available in SD. I think Nine was the first of the commercials to switch to HD in Dec 2015.

All the multi-channel simulcasts are missing, but otherwise it looks good. I hope you know that no one else but you will see those changes?

But 18 are still SD (excluding datacasts), and some are just SD versions of the HD channel, like 9Go! And 9GEM. And looking at the quality of 9’s hd channels recently, the added bitrate would definitely help if they shut these down.

I got rid of the simulcasts because they were unnecessary. But I may re-add them

Btw, are we happy that Seven is back in SA and Griffith. Surprised no-one has mentioned it yet.

10 too should use the Bitrate from the SD Shutdown.

The networks initially already had their initial channels in HD from 2001, it was just the advent of multi-channeling which required that to change.

Before the networks embraced multi-channels, 10 and 9 had the best HD channels. Super high bit-rates, Dolby Digital 5.1 etc. Hasn’t been the same since. I understand there is more channels to spread the bit-rate but still.

The only other channels that would be worth having in HD would be Nine Rush, Seven Flix for the movies and Nickelodeon, also for the movies.

HD is good to have for sport, movies, and documentaries.

10 Comedy or Nine Life or ABC family, wouldn’t be high on my priority list of channels that should be HD.

But, I think they should all be in MPEG 4, to reduce bandwidth.

Everything looks better in HD… news as well… ABC News 24 is definitely more watchable now that it’s in HD.

No. It’s 2025, everything should be HD.

A lot of the mindless crap my kids watch on YouTube is in 4K. FTA needs to catchup.

Doesn’t help that Nick & ABC Kids are still in SD.
Wonder if FTA streaming services will drop 4K streaming at some point

Yes, it was good to see ABC News upgrade to HD.

Not every channel needs to go HD.

I don’t think many viewers would really care if SBS Worldwatch, Gecko, Racing.com or Extra, cannot be switched over to HD due to a lack of bandwidth.

For me, Freeview channels that show live Sport (not horse racing but other sports), Movies and Documentaries should be in HD.

Why put shopping channels & RACING.COM In HD hardly anyone watches those channels.

I think they mean multichannels.
Datacasting channels (racing.com, shopping channels) have no need to be in HD.
