Daylight Saving

In all seriousness, splitting Queensland up into two states would be beneficial. South Queensland / Northern Queensland does make sense.

Keep the Northern Territory separate though.

Would create a WHOLE lot of other issues…

What happens with State Of Origin?
What timezone does Nth Aust adopt, EST or CST?

What news bulletins should they get… should 7, 9 and 10 produce a ‘Northern Australia’ bulletin and no longer get the Brisbane ones?

Do radio stations adopt the 8 prefix… eg 8MK instead of 4MK.

Add a Northern Australia team and a Victorian team .

Probably would - given they would be absorbing the NT into the new state, would mean that it would be easier to just make it 8 (same with postcodes).

I would also presume as such that NT laws would apply to the new state, and that the NT courts administration would take over the local courts, etc.

How would that solve the DST issue? It would just shift it further north and those in that zone would still be out of synch with the rest of the east coast.

Yeah, and they, can where the color purple. :joy:

I agree with this. We’re likely to see the population of Queensland grow so why not create a new state eventually. Capricornia?

The Northern Territory is very different so should stay separate. Unless we go back to the time when it was known as the Northern Territory of South Australia. Central Australia or Centralia?

CST would work better for them.

Thinking that it’s the northern Queenslanders who are dead opposed to Daylight Saving. If they were in the same time zone as the Northern Territory, then they don’t have to use it but the southern Queenslanders could adopt Daylight Saving time.

Seems like a dumb suggestion to create a state that two time zones.

Maybe the logistics aren’t feasible but then again there isn’t that much difference between Cairns and Darwin right now.

Cairns sunset 6.22pm
Darwin sunset 6.47pm

Shift Cairns to DCST and sunset would be 6.52pm. Have I got that right?

Isn’t the time difference an hour? Would be 7:22pm I think if I’ve got it right.

No, only 30 mins between QLD and NT.

No, it’s the other way - subtract 30 minutes from Cairns time to get CST - Darwin doesn’t have daylight savings - they are an hour behind Adelaide.

Anyway, never going to happen :city_sunset:

It definitely makes sense for Queensland to be split into two (and I like the name Capricornia), given that North Queensland is so far distant from Brisbane (to the point where even Melbourne is closer to Brisbane than Cairns) that there are distinct cultural differences and logistical challenges at present (case in point, daylight savings).

I’d also take the opportunity to shift the ‘new’ Queensland’s border slightly south- the watershed between the Clarence and the Richmond (between Grafton and Lismore) seems logical given that the area is fairly sparsely populated. Certainly makes more sense than having the state border and time zone change run down the middle of the street in Tweed Heads.

Having been resident in the Northern Rivers too for a little while some years ago, there’s also a strong cultural connection and affinity to Queensland in that area, to the point where 2/3rds of people I was around seemed to be Maroons supporters!

At the risk of derailing this thread, these arguments that culturally, Queensland is too big to be run effectively by one administration, would imply that WA needs to be dissected too, no?

Northern WA wouldn’t have the population to justify such a change, even if it is merged with the NT.

Wrong way.
If Northern Australia went to CST that would make NQ 30 minutes behind what it is now.

Cairns Sunset would be 5:52pm.
Rockhampton which would likely be near the border of NA/QLD would have sunrise at 4:42am and sunset at 5:41pm today if Northern Australia used CST. Definitely not the right time zone for that area.
