7News Melbourne’s Xander McGuire reported this afternoon that Josh Hazlewood would miss the opening Ashes test next week. It was later confirmed by Cricket Australia which said the fast bowler, who had played in the Sheffield Shield game against Victoria at the SCG earlier this week, had a hamstring strain. Michael Neser would come in as a cover.
Seems like just about every WBBL game so far this year has been rain affected.
Tonight was no different at North Sydney Oval.
The Melbourne Stars made 4-219 in their 20 overs, with Meg Lanning scoring 135.
The Sydney Sixers were reduced to 4/21 in 4 overs before rain intervened. Kim Garth had the incredible figures of 4 wickets for 3 runs off 2 overs. There was a bit of an anxious wait as 5 overs were required to constitute a game.
Play did return with the game reduced to 10 overs, with the Sixers needing 154 to win (so another 133 off 6 overs!).
Sixers got nowhere near it, bowled out for just 42, the 2nd lowest score in WBBL history.
What’s everyone’s setup today? I’ve synced the Seven audio up with the Fox pictures. Might switch across to the ABC call at some point but the Lane-Ponting-Broad team is much better than the Gilchrist-Vaughan-Warner Fox grouping.
My setup is to monitor this thread for any news , as i have assignments to work on (Third trimester at Deakin). Hopefully 7 will upload some of the match later on so i can watch a condensed version later.
England are 4/105 at lunch with Starc taking three wickets. However, Australia had only bowled 23 overs in the section, which could see the team losing some part of match fee at the end of this test for slow over rate, unless Nathan Lyon bowls a lot of overs today.
Nothing new re the slow over rate. As with the warming climate, I’ve just learned to accept it…the match is unlikely to go to the fifth day anyway.
The over rates are better in Sheffield Shield, where 96 overs should be bowled. Perhaps that’s an argument in favour of four day tests: time would be more of the essence then and may provide an automatic fix to torpid over rates.
Dennis Lillee used to say that 4 wickets minimum are required in the opening session at Perth. Aussies on par on that score
