Smith has been replaced by Marnus Labuschagne for the final day of the second Ashes test.
Australiaās chances have taken a hit.
Thereās a chance Smith may be ruled out of the 3rd Test as well due to concussion.
The second Ashes test ended in a tense draw with Australia finishing at 6/154. Labuschagne top scored with 59. Ben Stokes was named man of the match for his 115 not out in Englandās second innings.
Steve Smith has been officially ruled out of the third Ashes test due to concussion.
A massive loss for the Aussies.
Whoāll score the runs now?
Marnus Labuschagne
They need Mitchell Starc in or else the Third Test will go horribly wrong for the Aussies.
Heās been out of form lately, hasnāt had the consistency needed to trouble the Poms.
The top order has been the biggest problem, both Warner and Bancroft have barely failed to get out single digits in both tests, putting the middle order under a lot of pressure.
Surely he would do a lot better than what Hazelwood did in the Test just gone or Lyon, as he really got smashed around the ground in the second innings.
Australia canāt afford to not have a spinner.
Helps maintain the over rates, and pace bowling is much more taxing on the body than spin bowling is.
they should have Marnus who unfortunately is only part time with his bowling, who can help Lyon with his bowling.
Hazlewood was fantastic in the 1st innings, what do you mean
he just couldnāt get any more wickets to add to his total for the Second Test, same with Lyon. It just wasnāt their day after Smith got knocked out.
In his only second test, Jofra Archer took six wickets with a devastating bowling display, as Australia were bowled out for 179 in the weather affected opening day of the third test at Headingley. The 111-run third wicket stand between Warner and Labuschagne was undone by another batting collapse late in the day, losing 8-43. With fine weather forecast for the next four days, Australia will have to bat out their second innings AND bowl out England cheaply twice, to have any chance of saving the test.
There is one interesting stat though: the last five tests at Headingley were won by teams which lost the toss.
I think Australia will still be in the game if they can get England out for less than 250 tonight (our time). Their bats havenāt been in the best form of late either.
Australia should then have the best of the batting conditions on Day 3 to post a challenging target for when the pitch will take the most turn.
England still comfortably in front at the moment though.
At least Warner found some slight form.
Great timing to turn over to the cricket on Ch 9 during an ad break of the footy (Bombers anxiety
), seeing Stokes dismissed by another good catch from who else but⦠The now controversial Dave Warner. Interesting test and indeed series shaping up here folks.
If only Englandās weather could be fixed (never complain about Australiaās winters ever again)
Australia is back with a vengeance today, bowling England out for 67 in just 2.5 hours of play. Cummins, Hazlewood and Pattinson all did their job with Hazlewood grabbing 5/30. Itās Englandās lowest test score at Headingley (previous lowest was 76 against South Africa in 1907), and their lowest score in the Ashes since 1948.
Now controversial? No he has always been controversial. Australians wonder why he is booed in England? Only half the reason is the ball tampering ban. He has had a lot of run ins with English players.
Australia ended day two of the third Ashes test with a lead of 283 and four wickets in hand. With three days of play remaining, anything can happen. According to ESPNCricinfo, two of the biggest Ashes run chases happened at Headingley (Australiaās 3/404 on the final day of the 1948 test and England chasing down the target of 315 in 2001). Also West Indies chased down 322 to beat England at the same venue in 2017. So Australia will want to keep their second innings as long as possible and set England a target of 400-plus.
