COVID-19: Melbourne/Greater Victoria Re-Opens

Clearly explained in the conference and it was the exact same for NSW, to allow time for those who are planning on returning to WA with valid G2G passes time to get prepared to book a flight and arrive in WA.

The weather is horrendous. Outdoor PT or Golf, couldn’t think of anything worse. It was bad enough today walking from the car to the supermarket front door.

The next 7 days is even worse. No great loss.

I don’t see anything wrong with that, he is a democratically elected leader but that doesn’t put him and his decisions above scrutiny or criticism. Gladys and Scotty cop a fair bit of criticism for some of their decisions and quite rightly, that doesn’t mean that any other state or territory leader is exempt from criticism though where it is justified.

My view is that the situation where it is probably easier to get to WA from America or Europe than it is from NSW or soon to be Victoria is indicative that the hard border measures in place are overkill. That’s not to say I don’t support them having a controlled border, I can understand the need for it and understand why it is so popular with the people of WA, but total lockouts in this style are way over the top. The harshest domestic travel restriction for returning residents should always be 14 days HQ. Total lockouts are something Victoria and Queensland have done as well at times and likewise they should be subject to the same criticism (although both have wound that back now to a degree).

Imagine having that come home for tea every night. Wouldn’t surprise me if the police are chasing up a few outstanding warrants at these gatherings.

Geelong and Surf Coast might roll on into next week. 3 Mystery today and water water detections in Geelong suburbs might hinder that reopening Sunday night.

I feel the need to quote myself:

Except that this isn’t what the article says - rather, Casey has pointed out that:

  • Victoria has approached (if not passed) the vaccine uptake numbers where we started to see a turn in the case numbers in NSW, which was reasonably consistent with the output from the Doherty modelling
  • However (and this is important), both the Doherty modelling was predicated on and the experience in NSW had a common thread - the gap between the highest and lowest areas of vaccination uptake was much closer (or a consistent number)
  • Based on the data, there is a significant lag between LGAs, these LGAs happen to coalesce with the LGAs where the outbreak is particularly prevalent

you’re reading too much into what he’s written

Absolutely. I agree with you with respect to such distinctions. I had no issues with this particular individual and his analysis / commentary until it became quite partisan.

Much like I’ve ceased watching The Project as Waleed Aly has become much more partisan of late.

It’s quite convenient leaving out key facts that don’t support your argument, which both individuals do often.

I’m also well aware that this applies to all sides of the political spectrum / discourse, and I would call such things out just as equally.

I don’t accept that it was purely coincidental that he was MIA right after such commentary and being called out for it.

Today’s numbers

I guess people can stop dumping on the NSW Government for not locking down early enough. Surely this proves that doesn’t make a difference. If the virus wants to spread, it’ll spread.

I wouldn’t say it’s that simple.

The NSW and federal governments have a lot to answer for, as do the media.

This will probably be a mega seeding event tonight sadly.

What event tonight? People in Melbourne sneaking to each other’s house for the GF?

It’s not a matter of dumping on nsw - what’s done is done, what each jurisdiction has done right or wrong will come out in the end. However fron my ordinary science and demography believing point of view it would appear that if a ring were put around the Bondi cluster earlier (leaving aside the gaping hole of an unmasked and unvaccinated border worker which allowed the virus into the community) neither Sydney, regional NSW, Victoria and the ACT would be were we are now.

We can’t know that for sure. Ring or not people will always do the wrong thing.

I know of so many people who are breaking rules left right and centre. Whether it’s inviting people to their home to socialise or leaving their 10km, they’re just over it.

I imagine lots of people will be visiting other people’s homes to watch the GF tonight.

1000%.

Yesterday I saw my next door neighbour outside and when the convo ended she said “sorry I got to go get ready. I’m going to my friends house for dinner”.

I walked off shaking my head.

Ah no… it’s very much proven the NSW Government fucked this up from the beginning. Stop making excuses.

Um the numbers don’t lie mate.

NSW has been roughly 1000 each day for a week now and they entered lockdown late.

VIC just recorded a figure in their 800’s and they went early.

Two very close numbers.

Not sure what “excuse” you are referring to?

Sorry mate, but If Sydney lockdown earlier and harder, we wouldn’t be seeing the ACT, Victoria and New Zealand in lockdowns. The blame very much lies on the NSW government for this mess.

Do we need reminding that the virus snuck into NSW numerous times last year from Victoria?

The VIC government are just as incompetent, if not more (how many lockdowns has Victoria had again), than NSW.

They both are to blame. I’d love to see new governments implemented in both states next election.
