COVID-19: Discussion of Impact 😷

I may be wrong but in June/July last year had any of the vaccines been given the green light? I thought they were all still in trials. We had the vaccine being tested at Qld University and also AstraZeneca, both of which would’ve been produced in Australia. We now know that the QU vaccine failed the trials and AZ had the TTS issue, but when Pfizer initially approached us had it even passed their trials?

they were still in trials, but why would that matter?

This is correct.

The main criticism is less about the potential efficacy / success of the trials at the time, but that the federal government had a very narrow focus on the UQ and AZ vaccines only, when other governments that were more successful at vaccinating their populations in a more timely manner had ordered 5 or 6 vaccine candidates.

At the time countries were signing deals for something that may not pass the trial process (hence why many did deals for many vaccines to spread the risk) - we tried to spread the risk and wasn’t successful

Pfizer (at the time) could have been considered a greater risk too - it was a new type of vaccine that at that stage was in early testing with little knowledge about it, AZ and UQ were a more traditional style of vaccine

It wasn’t, Pfizer was the frontrunner from early in the pandemic. Every other developed country knew and took action, every armchair analyst knew. Why didn’t Greg Hunt?

Who knows. I guess hindsight is a wonderful thing but it would’ve definitely made sense to purchase from multiple companies. That said, didn’t the US mainly use Pfizer? I know they spent a huge amount of money so they’d be one of the first countries to receive the vaccine, so perhaps knowing that we wouldn’t get the vaccine straight away was a deterrent?

The results of the early trials were not published until after we had signed any deal

Has Scott Morrison faced the media over his trip to Sydney and then vaccine allocations? Or has he booked a timely business trip to the US?

Can’t understand this. Outdated thinking even pre Delta. Anyone still talking of zero is nieve and uneducated.

Time to pay the lockdown bills

Hey @KICK-IT do you have the governments covid safe app in the Uk? Is it compulsory? A friend was telling me tonight a story of someone in the UK that had been using it and was on public transport. She has been ‘pinged’ as a closed contact 3 times in the last month and has had to self isolate for 10 days even though she is vaccinated. She has apparently decided to delete the app as she can’t afford to keep taking 10 days off work.

I was just talking to this about a friend. I wonder what this will mean here in Australia in the next 12 months. I don’t think I am going to enjoy my $2,000 tax returns…

Her story sounds correct.

No, you don’t have to have it. In fact stories broke in June of govt ministers deleting the app as they didn’t wanna get pinged and have to isolate and risk not being able to take their European June summer getaway to France Spain Portugal or Greece. It was at that time I deleted the app too. As I refuse to play by the rules of the people making the rules don’t feel the need to play by them

However as of august 16 if you are vaccinated and get pinged you don’t have to isolate. So she has that part wrong.

I got emailed and texted on in july to say I was in close contact of a positive case and I had to isolate 10 days. I called the NHS to ask where and what date and I was told it was my flight from Madrid to london 9 days ago. I had deleted the app following the governments lead so I asked how they knew to contact me. I was told the airline manifest.

“So it was 9 days ago I was exposed, how long do I need to islote now?” I asked

Just 1 day they told me!

Great system  I was walking around london for 9 days!

No doubt we’ll get a nice big COVID Levy charged to pay for it for five to ten years.
