Community Radio

Maybe that’s why I heard Iron Maiden on 4ZZZ just now. I was tuning around on the Bribie Island TEF, seems like a decent setup on that one.

Joyce and Hanson appeared on Tamworth’s 88.9FM this morning where Joyce made the announcement.

PSA: If there is an issue at your local community radio station (dead air, glitching transmitter, etc)…
TELL THEM!

Don’t think “I won’t tell them. They must know by now. Someone would have already told them”
Because there are lots of other people thinking the same thing!
Be the person to actually send the email or make the call and the issue will get fixed much faster instead of dragging on for an entire weekend, which I have heard happen at least twice

 Had to get a diesel genny in to run the place for a few days. There was extensive damage to both councils (showground) and Endeavour’s infrastructure. All fixed up now thankfully.

2OOO FM 98.5 has been off air for the last week at least. Maybe my bad memory, but I was quite sure this forum had a devoted technical section where such issues were noted, but doesn’t look like it, so yeah. For what it’s worth, asked google’s gemini, which just came up with the same generic AI slop, so not sure what is going on there in Artarmon. Tried ringing up staff, but no one picking up, may catch a train out and drop by there in Burwood one day and see what’s going on.

Its still on DAB, must be a significant FM transmitter fault.

I’m aware where I live in a ditch and behind some highrises is giving me reception issues with many sydney stations, but yeah, this is complete dead air, absolutely no signal, no audio, no carrier, just gray noise, nix.

Apparently Joy 94.9 was off-air on Monday. This was from an email newsletter to members/supporters:

If you were unable to listen to JOY on Monday 12th of January or get onto our website, it was because we had an extended period of downtime.

Our website and broadcast equipment are located in the CBD. Shortly after 2:00pm on Monday, a small electrical fire broke out a few levels below our equipment. Power was cut and the sprinklers on the impacted level put the fire out. Fortunately no one was hurt.

Our website, internet stream and FM transmission were impacted. DAB+ was not affected as it goes through a different broadcast path.

Electrical safety checks took time to complete, due to the water damage on the levels below.

Power was eventually turned on, shortly after 10:00pm, and we were able to restore all services.

This begs the question, why would they be streaming from the point of transmission… I’m guessing they have a receiver at someones house which receives it off air and then streams it, seems odd…

They were also running a UHF STL link, don’t know if they’re still operating it but I could actually receive it here in the inner suburbs

It’s been off air since just before Christmas. Faults like this almost never coincide with good tropo conditions, however in this case it delivered. 2PNN Lismore was received with RDS in both Sydney and Bungendore during the current outage.

I’m not aware of any additional Es reception into Sydney on 98.5. Here 2OOO FM is weak enough to get DX over the top in any case, especially during the day when tropo to Sydney is usually rock bottom. 2OOO is usually a pest when trying for Lismore tropo however, as Sydney tends to be enhanced along with the North Coast stuff.

Wow, we are talking distances of between 500 to 100k from the TX sites.

Is 5MBS Adelaide meant to be metro wide? Can barely receive it in the Adelaide Hills on 99.9. I read somewhere that they’re licenced on an Adelaide Foothills low powered transmitter which are in the CBD.

Are all the MBS’s affiliated with each other or is it just a coincidence they all have the xMBS call sign.

Stands for Music Broadcasting Society; I think the affiliation is generally quite loose between the states, though stronger at the time when FM was being introduced. FM was pushed by these classical music aficionados.

5MBS is on 99.9 at a comparatively low 400w licenced to serve the Foothills. Transmitter is listed as Belair.

If I’m correct, I think Joy FM are in the CommBank building at Bourke Street in the city?

Being an inner city/suburbs only licence, and already being in a tall city building, makes sense to broadcast from there as well.

DAB+ would be from Mt Dandenong.
