I wasn’t so lucky back in November with a storm hitting Sydney. Scheduled departure of 9:30pm, delayed twice - 10:30pm & 10:50pm and then cancelled.
After trying four hotels for the evening, found one at $300 to sleep for four hours. Had the second flight out of Sydney to Melbourne, late for work that morning. My partner arriving a few hours later as they couldn’t get us on the same flight.
The beauty of having an Amex Platinum card, claimed the hotel stay and got the $300 back.
Wet, windy and a chilly-ish 19 degrees… already had 50 mm of rain since 9am, the rain was coming in sideways… thankfully it’s just died off in the last 10 mins or so.
Well at least the wind has eased now… still raining here, but only lightly.
I can live with that… for a little while.
It’s wind AND rain together (like it was yesterday) that gets me … well…‘cranky’.
Serenity now, serenity now.
(since we can’t post these anymore, I’ll just say it… ‘angry man yells at cloud’).
You wouldn’t know there’s a raging East Coast Low off the Mid North Coast from where I sit. Tasmanian style summer weather here today, low 20s and partly cloudy. A little breezy but that’s the extent of it. It’s been like that since the Wednesday storm from what I could see. We are too far south to be impacted from the low much.
I was out MW DXing last night at Cooma and it was very chilly for the dog days of summer, 13C with a brisk southerly. Had the jumper and beanie on and even then it wasn’t exactly warm.
Even in Geraldton, the weather hit a whopping 49.3 degrees Celsius (which is 120.74 Degrees Fahrenheit.) it is the hottest ever January day in Geraldton and the equal hottest day on record (18 Feb 2024)
The heat in Perth has a simple cause: Cyclone Sean, which is spinning off the Pilbara and directing NE winds straight over Perth and the SWLD (winds spin clockwise around a low). Perth usually gets its worst heat later in summer (Feb/March) as there are more easterly winds then; the converse is usually true for the eastern states. ‘Sautumn’ rather than ‘sprummer’ is more common in WA.
Some heat over east as well but it isn’t lasting as long. As usual, the Aus day long weekend will be quite toasty. Jan 26 is statistically the hottest day of the year in Canberra so hopefully it’s downhill from there, though there will be plenty more heat left in the warm season yet.
Temperatures plunged more than 10 degrees in under an hour in Sydney on Wednesday afternoon, with a southerly buster bringing winds of 90km/h that uprooted a large tree in Sydney’s north and tore roofs from buildings
Agree, it’s been one of the cooler summers I’ve seen for a few years. Even been sleeping with a blanket on my bed at night quite a bit, we haven’t even really had a warm night yet.
I see Brisbane was 35 degrees yesterday,so glad I’m in Melbourne where it was only 20 degrees.as soon as I walked out of RLA I felt cold but once I started walking I warmed up.It will be still hot when I go back on Friday probably
In an email sent out on Wednesday, the state Department of Public Works and Housing revealed the increased risk of power shortages would require public servants to consume less electricity on Thursday and Friday between 6am and 6pm.
On the day Treasurer David Janetzki is due to hand down a budget update, his department will seek to enforce the little-known Queensland Electricity Supply Emergency Response Plan.
Public servants are required to implement “all or some” of a series of measures, which include running laptops on batteries only and turning off second computer screens.
“Close all blinds or curtains to minimise heat,” the email recommends, while also urging public servants to “turn off unnecessary lighting”.
Onsite managers in government-owned and leased buildings may also isolate lifts and alter air-conditioning settings and timing.
