Illawarra TV Guide - Sunday 1/10/2000
Sydney 2000 Olympics enters it final day on Seven after 16 days of multi-sports action. Pavarotti and Friends happened to not be shown following the Closing ceremony (Victoria, New South Wales and ACT) with The World’s Greatest Magic being shown in it’s place plus some alternatives with movies such as The Temptations at 8:30 PM on Nine along with Beethoven at 6:30 PM and Bad Boys at 8:30 PM on 10.
Since our esteemed mod @TelevisionAU didn’t think this day was worthy enough of an ‘On This Day’ entry in that thread
, I felt compelled to add it here with a guide!
10 years ago today, my team won their first and only premiership in their 60 year history… Also noting it was the first NRL grand final screened on 9HD (as the 2015 decider was screened on 9GEM HD).
i got to leave something for you guys to do!
(But also, tbh, my OTDs tend to peter out past 2010)
Cronulla beating my Storm 14-12 on the Last Tackle was Special.
1990 and the GC Bulletin still using old 7 and 11-8 logos that hadn’t been used for a while.

Today (3 October)
1986 (a Friday) from Lismore’s “The Northern Star”.
1991 - from the ‘Port Macquarie News’ 2nd as well as 3rd October
Both the X TEN and 10 TV Australia logo?
The Channel 7 logo is the old one too I think.
Honestly where is that Dodgy Logo support group.
See also TVQ0 from that 1986 one.
Also, in Wollongong was ABC still on 5A then, too?
Perhaps I can assist… Do you worry that … Mappy will sneak into your bedroom late at night and kidnap you, whisking you away to Wollongong or Bermuda and forcing you to watch Crawfords DVDs or WIN Gold until you beg for mercy.. or until you utter the most difficult of phrases.. “I love Bruce!” or “Mappy is God!”.
Tbh i can handle WIN/mappy etc etc. Just the dodgy mocks and obsolete logos used in newspaper tv guides. As someone who has a history of OCD it’s very triggering. ![]()
In 1990, yes they were. It switched off in 1991.
I think both WIN-4 and ABWN-5a stayed on VHF until early 1991 when the Little Forest Milton Trig site (Ulladulla) was operational.
But odd that the guide above didn’t list UHF-56 as the alternate frequency.
Today’s TV: 3.10.1981, Melbourne
- Davis Cup on Seven, the USA v Australia tie live from Portland, Oregon. This was Australia’s first glimpse of cable network ESPN, they were the host broadcaster and had ESPN logos throughout the telecast. As a child watching this I have never heard of ESPN before and I was wondering what it stands for.
- Hardie’s Heroes on Seven at 5.30pm the top 10 showdown before the Bathurst 1000 the next day.
- World Youth Soccer Championships on Ten, Australia was the host nation, but the telecast was relegated to late night replays/highlights.
- SANFL Grand Final on Nine.
- The first day of the Spring Racing Carnival, the Edward Manifold Stakes Day at Flemington on Ten.
- On The Way to '82, a prelude to the following year’s Commonwealth Games, on the ABC.
Didn’t know $50,000 Letterbox was once $25,000 Letterbox…
That’s inflation for you.. today it would probably have to be $500,000 Letterbox!
I don’t have anything as confirmation, but I imagine that $25,000 became $50,000 when the show was picked up by interstate stations. By the time it debuted in Melbourne in early 1981 it was $50,000.
