Indeed.

The upside is that, for most viewers, there will be no repeat of the 2010 debacle in which Seven switched to its 6pm news at a crucial stage of the Stosur-Serena fourth-round match.

The Williams-Stosur 4R match was delayed on 7 for News, TT and H&A

With today being the first day of the main draw of the Australian Tennis Open, below are the SYD/MEL guides for the first day the last year the open was held at its previous home (Kooyong). Back then, the whole tournament was a daytime affair only.

Was that the first year the Australian Open Tennis started in January?

Also I noticed 6:30 with Mike Gibson was on 9 back then, so when 10 started it, it wasn’t the first attempt of a 6:30pm current affairs show with Mike Gibson

The Channel 9 6.30 show was just a summer filler while the Willesee show was on break. IIRC it alternated different presenters.

The last time it was not held in January was in December 1985 (from Mon, 25 Nov – Sun, 8 Dec)

Thus no tournament was held in 1986, and the last event at Kooyong was held in January 1987 as per Guide above.

When the Australian Open was held at Kooyong prior to 1987, the mens and womens tournaments were split. The women would play in early December, while the men would commence on Boxing Day. This copped a lot of criticisms from players such as McEnroe & Borg who refused to play as it was so close to Christmas which is why the number one seed was often ranked about 30 in the world as the top players didn’t play.

Here are those Sydney newspaper guides from 1999 I promised the other week. Some bonus ones included from even earlier - late 1998.

What do the numbers after programme names mean?

They were G-Codes, a way to schedule the recording of programs by using unique codes instead of the normal timer function.

Yes, primarily for Panasonic VCRs.

A good find. Although I don’t recall some of the programming such as Hunter being on at 1:30pm on NBN, I am not saying it didn’t happen. I always thought NBN had a preference for Dr Quinn.

Some of the regional variations were interesting too. One of your guides had ACA at 11am on WIN but no sports scheduled later. Also the Perth Test (cricket) did not have a time for ACA for WIN and NBN. I always thought if ACA wasn’t on on the evening due to cricket, that it screened at 11am the following day.

Sydney TV guide 26 January 1988 - this was a big day, being the Bicentenary… all day coverage of Australia Day from the ABC, 9 and 10, 7 only doing a few hours. Unusual to see Rage in prime time on the ABC as well.

Melbourne had similar coverage, though 7 crossed to horse racing in the afternoon from Moonee Valley (Melbourne guide further below, sadly the quality of the scan is not as good).

I still remember seeing the Tall Ships in Sydney Harbour in person (as a teenager back then).

I note that BNE and ADL had the WSC cricket listed on that day on Nine when neither SYD or MEL did.

CricInfo archive also not listing any game for 26 Jan 88.

It looks like it wasn’t played as it appears it was for the 3rd final which was only played if the finals were tied 1-1, and AUS won both finals.

That’s the problem with advance guides.

Often Standby Programs for metros were offered to newspapers but not always published in newspapers etc due to space restrictions

Even now there is a side note something like “late program changes may occur without notice”
