TV Guide for the weekend that ATV Melbourne changed frequency from 0 to 10 (January 19-20 1980).. Channel 10 was launched at 2pm on Sunday 20th.

Interesting that ATV didn’t have programming on channel 0 on the Sunday morning and early afternoon. Nothing til channel 10 signed on at 1:58pm.

Maybe there was some extra work to be done at Mt. D. Or they didn’t want to confuse viewers.

Yes, it’s interesting as:

a. ATV-0 started Sunday morning transmissions at 8.30am the previous Sunday, so 2pm is way later than their usual start time
b. When TVQ Brisbane changed from 0 to 10 on 10 Sept 1988, I think it was an almost instant changeover (as per guide excerpt below). Perhaps the technology back then didn’t allow for a straight changeover.

TVQ had to do an instant changeover because it was swapping neighbouring 10 and 0 channels with DDQ, so there could not be any overlap.

ATV I think just opted to start the day with the new channel launch in the afternoon and go straight into the special Outside Broadcast telecast rather than have part of the day with the old channel and then switching over to the new during the day. And the changeover was seen as something of an “event”, it was basically a launch of a “new” channel, so the afternoon start probably ensured more people were ready to tune in to witness, rather than a tiny amount of viewers at 8.30am.

While TVQ had no simulcast period between Channels 0 and 10, ATV did have a dual transmission between both channels for some time after the launch to give people time to re-tune their sets or get into the habit of turning to the new channel. We’ll Put You In The Picture – Television.AU

Came across this regional WA TV Guide in the “West Australian” June 1985.

Anyone know what '“Mid West” is… Is that VEW Kalgoorlie?

Correct. It was known as Mid-Western TV for a while, I think until GWN took it over. Was part-owned by Simon Townsend and actor Mike Dorsey at around that time.

What is MTN? I thought MTN was Griffith NSW

Mining Television Network. A small network of TV transmitters installed at mining sites/towns mostly in WA but a couple in NT as well. Very rudimentary facilities, likely not much more than a VCR hooked up to a low-power transmitter. They had to rely on program tapes being delivered by road from Perth which was, apparently, less than reliable. Network was essentially made redundant when the RCTS services (e.g. GWN, Imparja) began and IIRC they took over the transmitters of MTN.

“Shepparton News” TV listings week commencing 22 November 1990.

Even though pre aggregation, lists all of VIC, Prime and SCN since Shepparton is right in the middle (VIC TV home market) since some viewers can get all three.

Cool thread i see its been going for a long time

i was buying up a ton of tv weeks from the 90s early 00s maybe ill post some later

I remember VIC TV/SCN/Prime’s coverage of Ausmusic 90 was simulcast in stereo sound on Shepparton’s newest radio station SUN FM which began that same month.

Do you remember if it synced with any of the stations?

Even in the analogue era, there were different timings in the “delay”… Prime was pretty bad at this in NSW, about 20 seconds behind Channel 7 in Sydney.

it would have synced with VIC TV’s coverage given it is the local station. I think Ausmusic 90 was shown live on the east coast on the Seven Network (then known as the Australian Television Network). It was a live concert event.

Remember being in Forster and watching The Midday Show on NBN and ECN. NBN was about 30-40 seconds ahead of ECN. I thought NBN might have had a direct link while NEN had to get a satellite feed and then send it microwave to its relay.

Similarly in 1989 when i was living at Yass, we could get Canberra stations as well as Prime Wagga (RVN-2). The Bert Mewton Show was similarly delayed on RVN-2 more than Prime Canberra.
