Classic TV Listings

Morning news program hosted by John Barton and Kay McGrath. Produced at 7 in Sydney. It didn’t last long and McGrath went back to Brisbane after that to join Seven News there.

This was before Frasier became popular which was only the last few years of its run.

Today’s TV listing is 9 April 1962, 55 years ago, from Perth.

Not much stands out on this particular day. Schools programming scattered through the day on ABW2, with TVW7 not starting transmission until 4.45pm. TVW did commence weekday transmission earlier in the afternoon on Tuesdays and Wednesdays with local women’s shows like Today and Televisit plus the national show It Could Be You and the ATN7 serial production The Story Of Peter Gray

Typically, not a lot of Australian content to be found in prime time outside of news. Cafe Continental I think was a Melbourne or Sydney based production for ABC, and University Of The Air was on at 9.30pm.

Some things have changed. Highway Patrol on 7 has moved from a 9:30 timeslot to 7:30.

I use to watch Passions on Prime during the early 2000s & still to this day I still can’t make heads or tails what Passions was about!

With the Good Friday Appeal on today in Melbourne, here was the TV guide for the Good Friday Appeal in 1967, 50 years ago.

In those days the Appeal didn’t even get regional coverage, although 3DB which would have a radiothon all day could get picked up fairly well in country areas and would have got relayed too via 3LK (now 3WM) in Horsham, which was a relay station for 3DB in those days.

When did TV guides in Australia stop using that format without separate columns for different channels? And what are the 1,2,3,4 boxes next to the ABC listings for?

I assume the regional stations of ABC

ABAV 1 Albury, ABEV 1 Bendigo, ABSV 2, ABGV 3, ABMV 4etc

TV Scene (the latter name of Listener In/TV) used that format right up to its last edition in 1987.

TV Week stopped using that format in the 1960s before it converted to A4 size.

TV Times also had that listing format until about 1964 or 65.

The Sun and The Herald newspapers in Melbourne went from that old bullet listing to columns during the 1980s.

Correct. If you look down to the country listings it says refer to “2” listing for ABC regionals.

Different Highway Patrol. This was a US drama series from the late 1950s.

Today’s TV, 16 April 1974, for Melbourne. Class Of '74 is getting big ratings for Seven at 7.00 but Great Temptation, previously at 7.00 but bumped to 8.30 following the failure of talk show JC At 8.30, is doing poorly up against Number 96.

And here’s the same day for Tasmania, covering ABC, TVT6 Hobart and TNT9 Launceston:

Some great shows there.
I loved Class of 74 even thought I was only a youngster! Loved the theme song, so 70s!

I was only 2 when the show started but did used to catch the mid-morning reruns in the early 80s if i had a day off school or it was school holidays.

I was 6. I remember class of 74 and 75. There was a singer Marty Rhone who was very popular at the time who I think starred in it too.

Interesting thought. Considering the reception of TV from Mt Lofty (Adel) in the Riverland, it wouldn’t be a stretch to consider that broadcast quality off air reception would have been quite achievable from Loxton.

Former RTS 5A GM, Wendy Mudge, now running a B&B would know.

Interesting that on those occassions that NBN and WIN went all night. I do have some recallection that on weekends they’d have a late movie and would sign off at about 2am And of course when NBN Showed Ashes series from England it would be 3am at the end of the day’s play

Also on not knowing when the Logies would finish. Seems not much has changed in 35 years.
