Truly the end of an era. Up until a couple years ago, what appears to be the old STL microwave dish was still there and can be seen on Streetview, on Deakin Avenue between Seventh and Eighth street. It may have also been Vodafone backhaul pointing towards Yatpool as they had gear there as well.
The reason why the site is now empty is due to TPG/Vodafone closing a fair amount of their regional sites in favour of a network sharing arrangement with Optus, of which they have some gear on the nearby (and much taller) Telstra radio terminal.
… when I look back over my career, almost every television studio building where I have worked has been replaced by apartments, townhouses, offices, warehouses, shopping centres and the like, funnily enough, the one still standing is WIN at Mt St Thomas, although my own office was turned into several desks many years ago!!!
We still have some existing television stations still standing in Victoria.
ATV10 in Melbourne is a good example. Ten has long gone but the building and studios have been listed as heritage listed.
GTV9 exiting building is still standing but has been reverted into apartments, unfortunately the famous Studio 9 was lost.
HSV7 main site was demolished in the late 2000s but the production studies (now NEP) are still going strong. HSV7 second location (BCM) is set for demolition soon.
ABV2 Unfortunately lost its existing structure last year to demolition (Apartments)
BTV6 Ballarat was sold a number of years ago. Still currently standing but set for housing in coming years.
BCV8 Bendigo is still owned by SCA and is still standing due to radio and sales occupying the building.
STV6 Mildura building still standing but WIN moved out a number of years ago. As reported tower set to be demolished.
GLV8 Tarragon lost its last remaining studio structure 2 years ago. The main studio building was demolished early 2000s.
GMV6 Shepparton was demolished in the 2000s.
Prime Ballarat - structure and studio still standing. Prime moved out in the early 2010s and reverted to a sales office in the Main Street.
It lasted longer than I thought. There have been plans to develop the site for a while now and WIN moved out a couple of years ago. I remember when WIN did a report for the 60th anniversary, they showed that a heap of famous performers had signed the bricks in the walls. I wonder if they found some way to preserve these?
That building is still there, from the looks of the photos. That building was recently-ish advertised for office space leasing. Looks like it’s the other studio building which has been knocked down. It had been a glorified shed for decades. The main studio that the news etc had come from looks to still be there.
Although it t may have also got knocked down after the photos were taken(!)
… I now find it difficult to find any television studio building that I worked in since 1967 still standing, they are now apartments, townhouses, warehouses, shopping centres, etc …
