Bourke St - Suspected Terror Attack

Another conference at 11:03am

Innocent 74-year old man confirmed as the victim of Melbourne’s latest atrocity.

Shocking. Probably worked all his life (they alluded to him still being an active worker in Melbourne’s CBD), only to be cut down like this.

It is gut-wrenching and should never be acceptable.

What always irritates me is that the only reason we “lefties” are called out is because we treat the world with nuance and refuse to throw all Muslims under the bus. A tiny minority of the Islamic population is radicalised, much like any religions (Judaism and Christianity) have their extremes like Westboro. The dickhead yesterday was just that: a fundamentalist dickhead. Nothing more.

Was impressed with news coverage yesterday afternoon even on commercial stations. Was alarmist but didn’t jump to conclusions as to the nature of the incident.

No shit. But that’s what you voted for down there - unfettered immigration and identity politics. I keep telling people there is a massive massive problem with Buddhist terror attacks in this country.

Keep voting for those wonderful socialists then - oh, and watch your back in Bourke Street.

So how do you explain that Howard (a well-known socialist lol) was the one who upped the immigration rate?

And thanks, I’ll continue to go outside and enjoy my life in public spaces paranoia-free, knowing that there’s a higher chance of me dying of a heart attack or car crash than in a terror attack.

Isn’t this thread for discussion of coverage?

I don’t come here to read unnuanced political dissertations from people who really don’t seem to have too many original ideas.

Yes but there’s a higher rate of you dying in a terrorist attack in Melbourne than in Japan. Why?

In the raid following the attack, police arrested many senior members of the cult. Police activity continued throughout the summer, and over 200 members were arrested,

On a side note, travelling to Japan in January. Make sure I’m in your prayers.

Did 10 have any coverage during the evening? (Given they should be First)

This whole thread is political. It’s still called “Suspected Terror Attack” for fs. If you think we are just going to sit by when our second biggest city is hit by ANOTHER Muslim terror attack and just discuss graphics and presenters, then wake up. Shutting down ANY remotely political discussion of what’s going on is the reason these things keep happening.

Please. The Aum attack? We have had so many more attacks. I lived in Japan for 5 years and it’s extremely safe. Have a great time!! I recommend Osaka (that’s where I lived), Kyushu, Shikoku and of course Kyoto.

I’m relatively new to MediaSpy but I thought there were clearly defined areas for dicusssion of news coverage etc and for political debate.

I find it curious that you immediately jump to the conclusion that I and others were trying to shut down political discussion. The truth is I’m not interested in your political views, nor those of anyone else on here. For that I would want to know a bit about you; experience, background, credibility etc. Without that I have no idea whether there’s a basis to listen to you or whether you or others are just crazies with crackpot theories,

You’re obviously entitled to have your say… but do it in the right area where I don’t have to read it if I don’t want to.

Carry on :grinning:

We’ve had three attacks in five years, all of which have been relatively minor compared to the daily occurrences in middle eastern nations. Either way, I dispute that terrorism is solely an ‘Islamic’ thing. They’re more common because the religion is dominant in a region which has been a geopolitical mess for decades. If a pre-dominantly Christian region was seeing the sort of instability which the ME has seen, then I suspect there would be more terrorism from extremist Christians. We’ve already seen this in the instance of the IRA.

And thanks, I’m really looking forward to it. Still trying to organise a week of skiing at the end. Have already booked Kyoto.

Fair enough, but I do appreciate debating issues with people who hold different opinions.

We’ve had more than three attacks in five years. I don’t know much about skiing there. I climbed Mt Fuji a couple of years back, and the volcanoes in Kyushu are probably my favourite area.

Ya but my point is the root cause of Islamic terrorism isn’t the teachings of the Islamic religion itself, but rather the instability of the Middle East. Fix the issue there.

Welcome to the internet. Great to have you here.
