The media reform bill passed the House of Representatives today, despite Labor voting against it. It now goes to Senate where it faces more hurdles.

Unless a deal is in the works it looks like the LNP would rather pass nothing & just blame the opposition/Senate rather than be reasonable and keep the 2-out-of-3 rule?

I think the 2 out of 3 is irrelevant anyway due to the number of voices rule.

From today’s Australian:

Communications Minister Mitch Fifield says Labor will be partly to blame if a media organisation goes under while the government’s reforms remain stuck in the Senate.

Ramping up political pressure on the opposition to vote for the changes, Senator Fifield said yesterday Labor had to “get over” its “emotional response” to particular media organisations — which he said was stopping it from supporting the package when parliament returns on August 8.

A shame the LNP government won’t get over it’s intransigence, accept keeping the 2-out-of-3-rule in-place, and pass the rest of the reforms.

Yeah, Fifield is full of shit. Ditch 2/3 and it’d pass instantly, again LNP can’t compromise on anything. All while shutting down community media, no real concern for media diversity.

Sidenote, but I assume you guys do realise that LNP is only in Queensland? In the other states, the Libs and Nats are still separate, with them and the LNP allied in the federal Coalition.

As I’ve said before (probably in the ten thread) 2 of 3 is the actual “reform”, the rest is just filler to get it across the linE hence why there is no desire by the Libs to drop it out

This wouldn’t be an issue if we didn’t have limited licencing of tv and especially Radio - the technology exists (and we already use it) to broaden the availability of services

Yes I’m aware of the weird assortment of the same party, related-but-different parties, etc. around the country (including the CLP in the NT), but I use LNP as a convenient 3-letter-abbreviation (which matches the LNP in Qld, Lib/Nat Parties/coalition elsewhere).

Christ, talk about slanting a story.

I never see the proposed change passing. The government needs to be less stubborn and let the rest of the package pass. They really need to get over themselves and try to get 90% through. It’s better than nothing at all.

“We want an increased investment in the ABC and SBS,” Senator Di Natale said.

“It’s fair to say that we are discussing an increase in the funding for ABC and SBS and that is a starting point for any support to get rid of two-out-of-three.”

Governement bending to ideological rubbish from one nation. Inquiry after inquiry have proven the abc is balanced. Bias is in the eye of the beholder.
