Happens very often I have an outdoor antenna pointed towards the speed transmitter & In relation to Birchip they actually changed frequancy due to the very same issue.
More specifically I was looking for 98.7 4ABCRR Harrietville, but Alpine Radio might be covered in there too.
It wasn’t in the docs you kindly provided. I’ll have a look later when I have more time. It might be in Wangaratta area.
Accidental DX the other day on my pocket radio. In the middle of the day at the bus stop in northern Melbourne I was tuning through and heard Solange singing “Losing You” very clear on 96.7 FM. Apparently I was picking up Triple J Gippsland for a few minutes before it faded away.
For Sydney region DXers, Move FM 99.5 is completely off-air at the moment. Getting ABC RN Coffs Harbour fading in/out at my location instead.
No I was correct. This extract was located on the Alpine FM website:
3 January ’14 – Harrietville Transmitter installed. Alpine Radio is now broadcasting into Harrietville on 94.5 FM. The Harrietville TV Committee were instrumental in assisting the station with the planning and organising to complete the project. Alpine Radio technicians Rob O’Connor and Dick Puttyfoot with assistance from Paul L’Huillier and three Harrietville TV Committee members installed the necessary equipment to start transmitting into the town located at the foot of the mountains at the head of the Ovens Valley. An ABC Transmitter was also installed at the same time so residents can now listen to the National Broadcaster on 98.7 FM. A grant of $5,000.00 from the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR) in partnership with the John T Reid Charitable Trust made sure the project was completed.
Harrietville is located within the Wangaratta RA1 LAP as I suspected, but I can’t locate any tech specs for 3ABCRR 98.7 though. The other question is as to when 94.5 Alpine FM transmissions ceased or paused. ![]()
So often we hear of when something new pops up on air, but not when it drops-off.
In Wollongong tonight, have a north facing 11tb floor room with a balcony near WIN Stadium.
Am getting weak Middle Brother ABCs 97.1 and 98.7 as my best catch with the bunny ears.
Was also interesting to compare Sydney results in the other direction to being at home. For context
Home: 106 km from Artarmon/ Gore Hill, 140 m ASL
Here: 73 kms, probably 40 m ASL
Gore Hill ABCs/Nova are slightly stronger here than at home (47 dbuv vs 44) but Artarmon commercials are the opposite (51 dbuv at home vs 45 here).
Most Sydney suburban community stations are stronger at home too.
The escarpment would attenuate some of those, particularly those in Western Sydney. SWR FM is pretty much non existent in the Gong. Stations like 2RES are good though, due to the straight shot up the coast.
You’re right, 2RES is probably the strongest of them here.
All has been rather quiet on the DX front lately, the tropo has been relatively flat with not a whole lot of excitement going on here outside of the semi-permanents. That was until last night, I believe I may have gotten some meteor skip to Hobart’s ABCs.
FMLIST shows this as E skip, but I feel its not likely given the short burst of reception.
104.7 2SEA FM was booming through my car stereo on the Princes Highway in Dunmore just before 1pm this afternoon.
I was able to receive it for about five minutes or so with no interference, but the signal dropped out completely by the time I made it to Albion Park Rail. I’ve never actually received it before, not even right on the coastline with good line-of-sight to the south, so I got a surprise when I picked it up so strongly.
MAX FM Taree currently off air 2RE still on air.
You can often hear 2SEA (and the other Eden outlets) around Wollongong during bouts of coastal tropo. One of the best spots is half way up Bald Hill climbing out of Stanwell Park. 2EC 105.5 makes it in there more often than not in summer; there’s an optimal path where you block Canberra but not Eden.
@Radiohead often gets 2SEA as well. It overachieves for its power level.
Good conditions tonight.
Eden and Port Macquarie stations with RDS. 2BA 106.3 fair as well. Kempsey 106.7 Triple M Kempsey weak as well.
2UUU 92.3 Berry in weakly.
Friday night brought enhanced conditions from NNSW (Armidale, Tenterfield etc) then later Rockhampton. This morning the CQ signals are very strong and Mackay also being received.
94.9 JOY FM is currently off air.
94.9 Main FM can currently be heard in parts of Melbourne.
I’m not sure if it’s transmitting a stereo pilot. ![]()
Dare I say it- bringing some Joy to DXers?
Another possible target is 3JJJ Hamilton/Mount Dundas.
Sadly it’s already back on, but I did manage to hear JJJ 94.9 via scatter. Mt Dundas gets out pretty well towards Melbourne (permanent via scatter with the 10-el yagi) and during strong tropo i’ve even had 94.9 JJJ overpower JOY.
Question for @tvcl
With your new 7 els Yagis, is there any sign of Bendigo/Mt Alexander FM via daily As? 91.1 3ABCRR and 91.9 Star FM used to be heard weakly via long haul As into Oatley but quite frequently, as the responsible aircraft were Sydney-Melbourne or Melbourne-Sydney. Reception was best early morning, possibly tropo assisted.
It might be more difficult now as the Canberra outlets on 91.1 and 91.9 are received better in Sydney now than 10 years ago, when they were at Poppet Hill (Kowen Forest) rather than Black Mountain. Something to try anyhow.
