Did you mean 210mm or 2100mm telescopic whip?
Or an aftermarket fixed length 210mm whip antenna?
What size (extended length) comes as default on these TEF’s?
And where does one obtain robust longer than default telescopic whip antennas for them?

BTW Nice caches. :+1:

Surely 2100mm (2.1 metres) is really too long to be practical?

210mm. It extends out. It’s not the standard one you get with the TEF. I ordered the 210mm separately.

I ordered a longer one and it snapped within a week or two. Anyone have any tips on ones that are a little more sturdy or durable?

I researching this atm too & would welcome some “helpful” feedback.
I’m not sure if some of the later versions of the TEF6686 radios have a more robust SMA male connector on the telescopic antenna end or not. I’m not a fan of SMA connectors.
I have seen at least one instance of where a user retrofitted their TEF RX with a supplementary BNC socket for the antenna. Whilst I can’t vouch for how long lasting a generic Chinese made BNC telescopic whip antenna would be, it’s fair to say from experience that a BNC telescopic whip antenna & BNC RX socket would be more durable than a SMA equivalent.

Why not? Are these the screw in ones?

Yes. But I’ve found that that they can be iffy with making contact with centre pin, don’t handle knocks that well & just not constructed for longevity for several connect/disconnect cycles. The quality of manufacturing might come into play here to a certain degree. I know in certain industries they only provide for a x20 cycle of connect/disconnect etc before discarding. BNC are a much more robust 50ohm connector for connect/disconnect cycles, one of the reason you find them on used on test equipment & better rx equipment.

FM radio sounding like AM radio at night right now… ABC radio all over the dial. (Melbourne)

Some great ducting into Sydney from the MNC tonight, stronger than anything I had last Summer.

Triple J and Classic fm Middle Brother in moderate strength stereo, just a bit of a hiss.
Even the low powered News Radio Middle Brother is received, but only very weak.

102.3 Hit MNC Port Macquarie just above the noise floor. Some moderate enhancements of Newcastle and Illawarra signals, but no enhancements south of Knights Hill.

I tried Mt Moombill frequencies but nothing really further north of Middle Brother. The main duct tonight is from the MNC and Newcastle is hitching a ride on it.

A brief recap.
Middle Brother and Newcastle are in tonight in Bowral.
RDS on 99.7 and 106.9
2HD Port Stephens weak on 97.5

Also I may be going up to SEQ around Christmastime and yes I will probably do some DX when I’m up there if I have time.

Does Newcastle Tv ever cause issues with Knights Hill Tv reception in your parts of the Highlands when there is strong ducting?

Sometimes, it does. But we have our own repeater station whers not many people down here notice it.

So it obviously doesn’t affect the off air signal from Knights Hill to the Gib translator, unless they use microwave?

I assume they use Microwave links to the Gib. Hence why I still have TV Reception from the Gib.

Some enhancement from Wide Bay and Rockhampton into Brisbane but most troppo is from the south tonight with Coffs Harbour commercials stronger than usual and Mt Dowe ABC very clear. Breeze Tenterfield on 102.5 from the south in stereo plus some other inland like Hit at Dalby. On many frequencies a different station from the south compared to the north e.g. 105.5 has Coffs Hit + Rockhampton RN. Breeze on 102.5 also from Childers.

Great night @TV.Cynic, any GEM FM from Inverell?

No sign of GEM yesterday. Similar situation tonight with reception down the coast to Middle Brother - ABC FM noted on 98.7. 2CBD was noted from Glen Innes.

Gem received tonight from Inverell in stereo plus 93.5 RN. Also Rockhampton from the opposite direction.

Reception from Orange, NSW came up briefly this morning, enough to syphon off RDS from 103.5 & 106.7. Sky Racing on 106.7 didn’t have any RT, but has AF of 100.9 (Bathurst) & 99.9 [Filler].

Similar here with enhancements in all directions, weak Middle Brother, weak Orange commercials, Newcastle commercials at moderate strength.

Power fm Nowra just below RDS signal level.
Interesting i98 is suffering CCI from News Radio CC, but Power Fn has no CCI from Rhema CC. Weak Eagle fm too.

No enhancements south of Knights Hill.

Looking at the Hepburn charts this evening it is forecast to go Pink intense north of Sydney. If this comes off Newcastle national fm and commercials at local strength at times into Sydney, and moderate Middle Brother signals too.

Also potential for Central Coast fm’s to suffer extreme fade into Sydney as the signals are bent up and away in these extreme ducts.

Looking further ahead intense Pink tropo will remain north of Sydney over the next few days, and then by Saturday / Sunday NZ tropo is a possibility onto the MNC.
