Here’s a recording from Gold Central Victoria (as received in Sydney) last night also for comparison:
For me in Sydney, rural Victorian stations like River 1467 and Gold Central Victoria 1071 are generally amongst the strongest skywave stations. 3NE 1566, in particular, before it shut down recently, was especially a powerhouse coming into Sydney overnight.
Having waited until the greyline came over, it definitely seems to be the case. The KiwiSDR from Angaston over in SA barely hears it at all during the day, whereas at night it comes in fairly well, not as strong as the southern VIC stations though despite those being further away.
Got up really early this morning to try for 774 from overseas, sadly I got nothing but splatter from 5CC on 765 and ABC Alice Springs on 783. 3LO kept popping in and out as works were being carried out also
Back in the day, probably would have had 4TO too… though 3LO always dominated for me back in the days when most of my DXing was on AM, rarely ever heard 4TO here in Newcastle.
Couldn’t get JOUB early in the morning in Brisbane last night despite it being very strong the previous night, just as clear as the ABC stations on nearby frequencies.
Have also tried for even frequencies especially 770 but unsuccessfully so far. It’s the wrong time of year for a dark path to North America.
I think we just need to find the right location along the coast and the North American signals might be there. This place looks promising; you might be able to block some Australian signals by going underneath the headland:
FNQ is obviously the best spot. Propagation might not be what it used to be either though, was it you who got KNX 1070 on just a portable back in the 80s?
What I was referring to was trying to receive California after midnight here in our winter means it is daylight there. Where as in our summer at midnight (in QLD) it is still dark in LA so an all dark path.
Yes, you really need an SSB capable receiver to have any chance of North America but even then the splatter can make things tough. I agree it would have been a good opportunity in the Boreal winter, but then you’ve got other bugbears like severe lightning static (even an issue at the moment on the coast).
The most likely station on 770 might be KKOB Albuquerque. I would like to get KTNN Window Rock Arizona on 660- ‘The Voice Of The Navajo Nation’.
Usually propagation is too poor to hear much on the lower frequencies anyhow. The lowest station I’ve copied clearly is KFIG Fresno on 940.
The Pacific Northwest is excellent for MW DX right now because there’s little to no storm activity in their summer. And yes, at our end, the Cairns area is optimal. But I can’t exactly go there on a will-o-the-wisp.
Went for a drive up to Singleton today. Some more mining TX updates
United Colleries East
97.3 2HVR
99.3 2VLY
Both now on air,
(98.5 2JJJ was already on air)
United Colleries West
For some reason, someone has switched 92.1 and 95.7 around, so 92.1 2HVR is now broadcasting Power FM and 95.7 2VLY is broadcasting ABC Local Radio! (93.7 2JJJ also on air as previously reported)
So all of the 6 listed United Colleries TXs are now on air and all with stereo pilots, Power FM and Triple J have stereo separation at both sites.
I have gotten my new 10 element antenna! It’s amazing, Edge 102.5, Mt Dundas ABCs and Warrnambool ABCs are all pretty much permanent via scatters now and I haven’t seen the Ballarat ABCs lose stereo. It’s also very directional, most stations can be nulled out other than the main Melbourne FMs and local Southern FM. I am having some problems with interference when the antenna is pointed north, but I will try and find the issue on the weekend.
