Is there only two games?

Yes, there are two only games in the International Rules series this year.

The AFL launched the new shortened format AFLX competition today. It will be held on February 15-17 next year across three cities, with six teams playing in each city.
Pool A, Hindmarsh Stadium, Adelaide, Thursday February 15
Adelaide, Collingwood, Fremantle, Geelong, Port Adelaide, West Coast

Pool B, Etihad Stadium, Melbourne, Friday February 16
Carlton, Essendon, Hawthorn, Melbourne, North Melbourne, St Kilda

Pool C, Allianz Stadium, Sydney, Saturday February 17
Brisbane Lions, Gold Coast, Greater Western Sydney, Richmond, Sydney, Western Bulldogs

According to the AFL website:
Each AFLX tournament will consist of six teams, divided into two pools of three. Teams in the same pool will play against each other once, with the top team from each pool facing off in a Grand Final.
Games will consist of two 10-minute halves with a two-minute break at half-time.
AFLX will be played on a rectangular field with dimensions similar to that of a soccer field, with 10 players per team (7 on the field and 3 on the bench) and there is no limit to rotations.
In order to create a fast and free-flowing game, the last touch out-of-bounds rule has been introduced, while the ball will be kicked in after all scores.
To promote high scoring, the League has also introduced a 10-point super goal for majors kicked from outside the 40m arcs.
Two field umpires will adjudicate the shorter format, while two boundary umpires and two goal umpires will also be required.

Will you watch it either on TV or at the game?

Rectangular field?

That IS interesting … didn’t realise that.

I’ll be interested to see what it’s like.

Doubt it. Any broadcast details yet?

Seven is interested in showing AFLX, although the Thursday play in Adelaide clashes with Seven’s regular line-up while the Sydney tournament may coincide with the channel’s coverage of AFL Women’s match of the round. Fox Footy probably will show AFLX live.
Each day’s competition should be over within four hours, assuming:
20 minutes per game x 7 games (6 pool games + grand final) = 140 minutes
2 minute half time per game = 12 minutes
10 minute break between games = 60 minutes
Total = 212 minutes

Nine or Ten might poach it?

Imagine if it turned out to be a success (kind of like Seven’s RLWC this year).

I would imagine AFLX is part of overall AFL broadcast deal like AFL women’s competition, so Seven and/or Fox Footy will show it.

Fox will show it, they need the content. Seven won’t bother with something like this, much like many fans.

I heard some rumours from The West Australian saying that the new Optus Stadium will host an AFL Grand Final in the future.

Will never happen. The G’ still held the Grand Finals when it was going through redevelopments in the past

The thing in The West Australian says that WA Premier, Mark McGowan wants to push hard on the AFL Grand Final to be held at the new Perth Stadium.
The Crowd capacities:
MCG: 100 024
Optus Stadium: 60 000
Etihad Stadium: 56 000
Adelaide Oval: 53 500
SCG: 48 000
Gabba: 40 000

That’s nice, saw on the news he’s tied it to his whinge over gst.

The AFL grand final doesn’t rotate around venues so capacity in relation to others is irrelevant. No way it’ll happen under the current contract with the MCG.

If he doesn’t like it they can threaten to secede. Again.

Just tell them you can have a grand final when you introduce daylight savings so the time delay isn’t so great and then not squander all the GST payments.

Sure it wasnt AFLX or AFLW?

You’ve just listed the reason why the AFL Grand Final will most likely remain in Melbourne for years to come!

That will solve a major salary cap issue for the Swans.

Will be interesting to see if there’s a one off salary payment this year which may force the Swans over the salary cap or whether there’s a payment in 2018, 2019 and 2020 in line with the 3 years remaining on his contract or whether there’s something in his contract that eases the burden on Sydney in regard to paying him.
