Just means Carlton didn’t have a group of great players (like Brisbane allowing Neale to win the Brownlow), unlike teams like Collingwood which have many outstanding players stealing votes from each other. Well done to him though. But it’s not that impressive to be fair, as Brisbane and Collingwood (and GWS for that matter) both played the same amount of games as Carlton (3).

They include former Crows coach Neil Craig, former Richmond president Peggy O’Neal, AFL talent manager Kevin Sheehan, and current Brisbane Lions CEO Greg Swann.

LOL Stephen Quartermain is trending online tonight, bizarrely taking-down polarising former footy figure and recent reality star Daniel Gorringe and the two are taking further shots at each other tonight… Much to the public’s delight  Some rice might’ve been mentioned

Good news for Adelaide

A few bits and pieces coming out this afternoon regarding the 2024 fixture:

Riley Beveridge from AFL Media reports that the season would launch one week earlier, and Round 1 would be split over two weekends, with GWS v Collingwood on the Saturday night, and Sydney v Melbourne on the Sunday afternoon, before the traditional Carlton v Richmond match-up the following Thursday night along with the rest of the matches.

Whereas, Sam McClure is reporting on 3AW’s WWOS that the AFL is considering a proposal to start the season a week early with a soft launch in northern markets with four of the biggest Victorian clubs heading north.

2 matches in Queensland

  • Gold Coast v Richmond (Damien Harwick against his old club)
  • Brisbane v Carlton (re-match of the Preliminary Final)

2 matches in New South Wales

  • Sydney v Collingwood
  • GWS Giants v Essendon

The regular start to the season, Richmond v Carlton, would be the 5th game of the season, on the Thursday night heading into the Labour Day weekend (? wouldn’t the long weekend be for the four matches in northern states listed above) - this forms part of a normal 9 games of Round 2, and the eight teams above involved in Round 1 would have a bye the following weekend in Round 3. (So I’m interpreting only eight teams will play in Round 1 and the other teams have a bye?).

Can’t blame them for trying to capitalise on the NRL being in Vegas, but can they not change the tradition please? This clearly didn’t work in 2022 with the Grand Final replay kicking off the season.

Good to see we are hearing about hints of 2024s fixture. Should mean we get it released sooner rather than later! We used to get it late Oct/early Nov but recently we were not getting anything until December and they then used the COVID excuse

The 2023 AFL trade period finished this evening.

I think the most surprising moves out of this period were Taylor Adams going to Sydney, and his (now former) teammate Jack Ginnivan joining Hawthorn.

Carlton recruit and former Gold Coast Suns player Elijah Hollands has pleaded guilty to drug possession after being caught with cocaine at The Star casino on the Gold Coast last month.

Hollands was handed a good behaviour bond and was directed to attend a drug diversion course.

No conviction was recorded.

Why were they only discussing the issue this morning? It had been in the press for the past two weeks. Unless a formal announcement by the AFL is imminent?

The 2024 fixture will be released on Thursday, November 16. On Wednesday morning the league will reveal the match-ups for the four matches of the opening round in NSW and Queensland, which are expected to be played on the same weekend as the NRL doubleheader in Las Vegas.

UPDATE: the AFL announced the matchups of Round 1 at 7.30am AEDT Wednesday. They will be played AFTER the NRL Las Vegas games, and will clash with the remainder of NRL Round 1 matches.
