Parish played 100% better than Moore and deserved votes. Surprised Langford (17 disposals and three goals) and Setterfield (22 disposals) didn’t get any votes.

Saw that news leaking through over the weekend from WIN’s Brent Costelloe. To be honest, not sure how I fully feel about it.
I’ve always supported a Tassie team and definitely want one and I didn’t agree that we were effectively being held to ransom over the stadium component, the only reason I supported that however was because it was due to be a roofed stadium and multipurpose. From the news on the weekend, it sounds like the roof is now no longer part of the plans because if they are to host cricket it doesn’t meet the ICC standards and a retractable roof was put at around $300m.

For the AFL to only put up $15m as well when the Tas Government is putting in significantly more it felt a bit rough after seeing how much effort was given to other expansion clubs.

Going to be interesting to see how state and federal Labor deal with this too - state Labor has campaigned hard against the stadium so now with the feds giving the money it will be interesting to see how that plays out.

A new stadium will be good, but as to whether it’s $750m good and when that money could have been split between Bellerive and York Park and done significant expansions there I’m not sure. There are however other plans and upgrades to York Park which are due to start soon or may have already started and there were plans for upgrades to Dial Park in Penguin on the north west coast for AFLW.

They’re paying for your training centre to $50 million, plus $144 million spread out over how many years. Plus they’ll probably end up paying more anyway. And in a traditional football market you should be able to make some of your own money anyway which GC and GWS can’t.

Haven’t seen those figures from the AFL. Best I’ve found was a government press release late last year with only $10m for administration and high performance centre from the AFL with $60m from the state government plus their funding for 12 years with that $144m I believe being that amount, so again, not from the AFL but from the Tasmanian taxpayers.

What do we think a Tasmanian team should be called?

Earlier on in the process the NBL Jackjumpers talked about sharing names and resources and stuff but that was knocked back but was actually not a bad idea. I didn’t like the Jackjumpers name at the beginning but seeing how successful they’ve been and how they’ve made it their own (e.g. the ant nest, the chant of march, march, march etc…) they’ve done a great job with bringing people on board.

I think it will probably become something like the Devils but we’ve also had so many incarnations of that name with various teams over the years that there is a bit of a feeling of getting sick of it. Tigers would be good like the cricket team but obviously taken. Devils were in the VFL though for several years. Either that or something like the Islanders which has been suggested at times since they like to play with the map of Tasmania (snigger snigger) with the T and it would go with the “Defend The Island” catchcry of the JJ’s.

Cant call them Tigers. Devils is too close to Demons. Islanders, Titans maybe.

For shits and giggles, maybe the Two-Heads, Cousin Lovers.

Wasn’t that in the WIN report?

The AFL have to make sure a Tasmanian team doesn’t turn out like Gold Coast or GWS Giants, of which neither club are thriving despite having been in the competition for 10+ years. The Suns haven’t played finals, and the Giants are struggling to draw crowds and interest.

I agree with Eddie McGuire who suggested something along the lines of talent academies/training programs needing to start now with teenagers in Tasmania, and then perhaps in 5-10 years time once the talent has been developed, you can put a team into the competition. It should not be rushed.

I think a Tasmanian team has a much better chance of being successful than Suns/Giants as it’s a footy state and doesn’t have any competition from rival football codes.

The Tasmanian team, right now, is a bad idea that feels like it’s being driven as some kind of Gil legacy project rather then actually being good for the game.

Frankly there should have been a Tasmanian team before both the Suns and Giants.

Wouldn’t even bother with academies, you only get 2-3 decent players every 3 years or so which the other clubs crack it about how they get them so easily in the draft, another 4-5 that make a debut and play a handful of games which make the headlines for a day but are exposed as to how they’re not at the playing standard the AFL demands and end up back in the state leagues, and 25 others who get undrafted and are not playing footy at all by the time they’re 21. See it all the time with the Suns academy, and I’m sure there are similar stories across the board accounting for Next Generation Academies on top of that.

GWS can f**k right off. To Canberra. And stay there. :rage:

Oh dear, that’s 4 losses out of their last 5 for the Swans now…

I see the Giants kicked the last 3 goals to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat there.

Again, GWS can go to Canberra. A pimple on AFL and professional sport’s arse. Same with the Suns.

Merge the two and send them to Tasmania.
