Oh boy, the Suns. In their defence, going to Perth to face Freo is about the toughest assignment in footy this year, but they barely fired a shot. For a team that recruited well and looked so good early, you can’t help but feel it’s all falling apart a bit mid-season… again…

Brisbane defeated Geelong by 22 points at GMHBA Stadium tonight, the second year in a row the Lions won at the venue. Brisbane had a blistering start, kicking eight goals to one in the first quarter, before Geelong fought back to get within one point early in the third term. But the Lions steadied by kicking 8 of the next 11 goals to lead by 30 points at three quarter time.

Very hard to beat the reigning premiers when you give them the first eight goals of a match. Geelong still struggle to shake those slow starts post the bye.
I couldn’t believe how close it got though - could have arguably been in front at half time, and got within a point. But the Lions were always going to come again, and we didn’t quite have the answer second time round.
I’m just worried though, does this mean Brisbane are back? Beating Sydney then us comfortably in as many weeks. Do Freo and Lions fans just book their tickets to Melbourne at the end of September now?

The Oatley Public School version of ‘Waltzing Matilda, Boo For St. Kilda’ had a line about ‘Cats are in the kitchen, eating all the Snappy Tom’ (circa 1996). Though I think it was solely authored by one kid who moved up from Victoria!
Anyhow, that line has stuck with me ever since. Since it’s from the wrong side of the Barassi Line however, I’m sure my version isn’t canon…

Hunter’s friend Dave Andrews has posted a letter to the AFL Commission, whose chair is Craig Drummond, stating more must be done to protect current and future footballers from CTE.
“You have failed him,” Mr Andrews wrote in the five-page letter that touches on Hunter’s sacrifice for the game and pleads for the AFL leadership to better inform its players of the CTE risk.

Adelaide rebounded from their disappointing performance in the Showdown last week with a 25 point win over West Coast in Perth. The Crows led from start to finish although the Eagles got within 18 points at one stage during the final quarter. Darcy Fogarty kicked four goals for the Crows while Jamie Shanahan and Jake Waterman kicked three each for the home side.
Earlier at the SCG, Sydney dominated all night on their way to beat Western Bulldogs by 35 points. Charlie Curnow kicked six goals to top the Coleman Medal leaderboard.
I’ve just gotten back from the game, and the game just stopped after the first quarter. Bulldogs put the cue in the rack after that point and said fuck it. The Swans should have really belted them from pillar to post but didn’t.
It was an OK win, but not exactly one that puts a stamp on anything. Could’ve done a lot more.

Given that it’s sung to the tune of our national ballad, I don’t think ‘Cats are in the kitchen, eating all the Whiskas’ works as well (You’d have to draw out the Whiskas e.g. wheeeeskaaaas).
I was referring to Garry Hocking, who changed his name to Whiskas as a promotional stunt.

Following the verdict, WA Premier Roger Cook has ordered Winmar’s statue outside Optus Stadium to be torn down.
How could we forget that? 
Did it to raise money for the Cats who were struggling in the late 90s with what was then considered a crippling $7 million debt. That’d be pocket change for them now.
A sad outcome, but inevitable. Great player on-field and did a lot in that regard, but very hard to defend his latest actions.
Waffling a bit here, but a government authority I worked for once had a policy that nothing could be named after/tributed to anyone still alive. The logic was they still had the potential to soil their reputation (to which I pointed out that it’s not like unpalatable things haven’t been uncovered about people who were deceased either). But it would have prevented an episode like this at least.
