They will be calling the twilight match on Saturdays.
So this means Footy nightline is gone?
Iâm sure Footy Nightline will continue to air on Fridays, and could possibly also move to Thursdays to follow Thursday Night Football.
While Iâm not surprised 3AW will again cover Thursday night games with it being a fixture of the footy weekend now, Iâm shocked theyâre abandoning Saturday nights to do so.
Triple M will be delighted that when there are two Saturday night games, theyâll have the commercial audience all to themselves for the âmainâ game.
At least 3AW will now be covering five games per weekend (Thurs night, Fri night, Sat arvo, Sat twilight, Sun arvo) when previously it was only four.
I think too, talkbac k programs in the evening rate very highly on 3AW, so it probably makes more sense to have afternoon and twilight footy, and then catering to a broader audience at night.
According to this AFL website article, Saturdayâs Fremantle v Indigenous All Stars will be heard on National Indigenous Radio Service (NIRS), 6PR, Triple M, SEN and ABC.
Triple M will lose Jason Dunstall from their Friday Huddle team due to his commitments at Fox. Without Daisy Thomas being able to replace them due to his commitments at 7, it will be interesting to see who they roll out as the 2 new members of the team for this year to replace Chief and Duke.
My candidates include:
- Brian Taylor: front-runner to replace Darcy considering he is now free on Fridayâs after moving to Thursday nights on 7. One of the faces of the network and a former member of the Satuday Rub
- Isaac Smith: front-runner to replace Dunstall considering he was the main fill-in for the show during the second half of last season and was by far the rising star of the network last season
- Kate McCarthy: now that Armchair Experts has been axed, Kate is free on Fridays, would work very well with Isaac as the two of them had great chemistry together on Thursday nights last season, however, this scenario would only work if they move Browny to full-time caller
- Leigh Montagna: has great chemistry with Browny from their time on Sundays and has the ability to alternate calling/specials duties with Browny if thatâs the direction they want to go in. This would probably only work if they donât bring in BT
- Chris Judd: absolute outsider but a beloved former member of the show who still is a familiar voice when they host from his home once a season. He may be willing to rejoin on a weekly basis even if it is only for the Huddle and have a dedicated special comments commentator to jump in for the game (likely one of the above three). Again, an absolute outsider and probably not a chance it would happen but, you never know.
Additionally, both JB and Daisy are free on Thursday nights, and will more likely than not take up the second caller position alongside Heverin and one of the specials slots with whoever out of Kate or Isaac doesnât move to Fridays. My guess is that it would be:
Thursday Rub - Jack Heverin, Daisy Thomas, Kate McCarthy and Jay Clark
Thursday Night - James Brayshaw, Heverin, Thomas, McCarthy, Nat Yoannidis and Ash Chua
Friday Huddle - Mark Howard, Brian Taylor, Nathan Brown, Isaac Smith and Damian Barrett
Friday Night - Howard, Taylor, Brown, Smith, Nat Yoannidis and Ash Chua
I very much doubt Brayshaw will call Thursday night games. He will do Saturdays for MMM and that will be it.
Friday will probably be Howie, Browny, Damo and Isaac Smith for the Huddle, with BT joining them for the match call. However I feel the pre-game wonât be the same with just 4 people who have very similar personalities.
Wonder if Will Ralston will get a few more games? I canât imagine they gave him a few games last year for nothing.
If BT is joining for the match call, why not have him on the Huddle? He was great for the one year that he was on the Saturday Rub, really brought that 2000s MMM vibe back to the show.
SEN will broadcast the 2025 AAMI Community Series through its stations in Victoria, Tasmania, SA, WA and Darwin, starting with Geelong v Essendon this Tuesday night.
EDIT: Triple M will also broadcast Geelong v Essendon.
A handful of games will end up being local callers as well, assuming they wonât travel save for Gather Round or perhaps to Sydney games
I would love to see him on the pre-games too, but itâs well known Brian hates doing the pre-game shows.
