AFL Coverage

Would those figures tell you that you don’t really have to broadcast the exact same match across so many stations?

SEN has announced that during the 2023 & 2024 AFL seasons, ARN’s Cruise 1323 will carry AFL Nation’s coverage of three matches each weekend. The station will also take over from FIVEaa when it comes to simulcasting Sportsday SA alongside SEN SA.

SEN also announced that AFL Nation would broadcast five matches per round on SEN Tassie each week in 2023 and 2024, with one match of the round to also be available on SENTrack 1611am Northern Tassie.

But it’s so popular on the weekends for people who want to get away from the footy!

Are the three matches on Cruise 1323 in addition to those broadcast on SEN SA (including 1629 AM Adelaide)? Will the matches on Cruise 1323 be up against FiveAA and Triple M in some timeslots?

You can bet SEN are back to their Danny Staffieri mk 1 ways with 1323 and leasing airtime.

It’s all about SEN having outlets to run their clients’ spots around their content.

This just shows how money talks.

Clearly neither ARN nor SEN have learnt any lessons from 1323SEN or 693SENQ.

  1. Adelaide does not like SEN or sport on 1323AM.

  2. Apart from Melbourne, it looks like nobody likes SEN or its content on AM radio.

The sooner the above lessons can be learnt, the better we can free up the band for decent rating stations.

I have a feeling it will be like Perth, same game with different commentary team. Personally don’t see a reason to simulcast this considering they now have SEN covering the games anyway. Unless 5AA aren’t going to cover any game apart from Crows/Power…

SEN SA is still offband on 1629 and not on DAB at all, so Cruise would be accessible for more listeners.

This quote from the linked press release by Hutchy is interesting (emphasis added):

“While we are undoubtedly disappointed to lose Anthony and would have loved for him to remain as part of the SEN family, we are respectful of the challenges around his availability due to TV commitments. We wish him, his wife Eloise and family well with his next move that suits this availability. He’ll be missed.”

Could the bolded bits suggest Fox is looking into perhaps doing some type of deal with Seven that will allow them to use their own commentators on Seven-produced games from next season rather than wait until the beginning of the next broadcast rights cycle in 2025?

100%. Either he’s moving to 7 or Fox are doing all 9 games from next year. Both would love to have him on a Friday night (which is a hangover from Ch10 having only Saturday games, followed by Fox only having Sat and Sun games - but will now have Friday games too?)

I think he is going to Seven

While I expected Anthony Hudson to leave SEN eventually to concentrate on his Fox Footy commitments, I thought it would not occur until the end of 2024 AFL season.

Another big loss for SEN. Anthony Hudson has done a good job at calling the AFL on SEN and he will be missed.

Could Huddo take his Friday night spot?

That all but confirms Huddo is returning to 3AW to do Friday nights, presumably partnering with Bruce Eva.

According to Hutchy on The Sounding Board Podcast, Huddo left SEN to take up another opportunity in radio. This makes it sound even more likely he’s going to AW.

According to Herald Sun’s Media Street column, SEN has wasted no time by replacing Anthony Hudson with afternoons host Dwayne Russell as co-caller on Friday nights alongside Gerard Whateley.

Hutchy has also re-signed Nathan Buckley for two more years.

That leaves 3AW with alot of potential callers for four games a week if they all go around again
