So the AFL should give 10 the rights to help their ratings?
Yeah this is a nonsensical point from MrTVAus.
AFL arenât a charitable organisation - the reason every network wants the AFL is to improve their ratings or subscriptions. The fact they can barely broadcast football properly (with ads cutting in) wonât help their case either.
Fans want 10 to return to footy broadcasting given the state of 7âs coverage and commentary team has declined since 2017 when they renewed the rights plus losing Saturday arvo footy.
If 10 announces a bid that includes free to air Saturday afternoon footy, itâll be a winner.
10âs effort with the aleague is a clear example of the lowest OB provider bidder winning.
That OB provider does not have the resources to do the AFL without a massive step up⌠therefore itâs reasonable to assume the AFL coverage would be a lot better.
Surprised to hear Disney (ESPN) havenât thrown their hat in the ring. ESPN aired AFL in the past in the States and aired footy in 2020 for a short time. They already have two channels in Australia on Foxtel and Fetch TV.
Have ESPN ever expressed interest in acquiring rights to the larger Australian sports? (For Australia)
No. The only sport they air in Australia is the NBL. ESPN has never expressed interest in airing a big Australian sports here.
The new government may prevent a global streaming service like Amazon or Paramount from getting sports rights in changes to the anti-siphoning list
Well that would exclude fox too than as itâs owned by an AmericanâŚ
They wonât be precluded, rather theyâll be required to comply with the list
More like strengthening the FTA component rather than banning them from bidding/airing live sport.
Worth a fact check that one. Glad some other posters have set the record straight.
At most it would be something about the Grand Final guaranteed being on FTA
Probably have the rules apply to the streamers as much as they do Foxtel. Hopefully with provisions that FTAs actually make available what they bought the rights to and not just hand them all on to their in-house streamers or Foxtel.
Ah no mate. Just because your network isnât prepared for the future and doesnât have a streamer. Too bad buddy.
This
If they had one, would they have said this? One thinks not.
If the government gets the streaming loophole closed it is basically confirmed 7/Foxtel will have the rights. If Paramount+ is not allowed to get them, they will just pull out of the bid.
