###We Steal Secrets: The Story of Wikileaks

Sunday 11 December at 8:30pm

Screening as part of SUNDAY BEST, the ABC2 season of feature length documentaries, We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks is a riveting look at Julian Assange’s WikiLeaks, the controversial website which facilitated the largest security breach in U.S history.

Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney (Taxi to the Dark Side) details the creation of Julian Assange’s controversial website WikiLeaks - which facilitated the largest security breach in U.S. history - and traces the roots of Assange’s activism. Considered a hero and a martyr by some, Julian Assange was instrumental in uncovering abuses of power such as a devastating 2007 helicopter attack in Baghdad, that killed 12 innocent people including two Reuters employees, to the release of thousands of classified State Department foreign policy documents. The issue transcends WikiLeaks into transparency and ultimately, into who controls information.

###End of the Line

Wednesday 14 December at 9:30pm

Part of the OPENING SHOT’s fourth series of half hour documentaries from Australia’s next generation of documentary filmmakers.

Nowra, a beautiful intersection of some of Australia’s most alluring beaches, rain-forests, mountains, and farmland, has fallen hard to the hand of Ice. Tom Abood, a young local that left his hometown to follow his dream of becoming a filmmaker, returns to find out if a handful of locals have what it takes to beat the ever-spreading scourge of Ice. Follow Tom as he meets up with familiar faces of his past to see if Nowra can be more than just the end of the line.

###Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man

Sunday at 8.30pm

This Sunday, ABC2 will pay tribute to the late singer and songwriter Leonard Cohen, screening documentary Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man at 8.30pm on ABC2 and iview.

Since he burst onto the scene in 1967, Leonard Cohen inspired generations with his unique personality and haunting music, becoming one of the most original and enduring artists to emerge from the 1960s. Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man takes an intimate look at the songs, poetry and life of one of music’s most celebrated and influential troubadours.

In January 2005, director Lian Lunson travelled to Sydney to film the historic “Came So Far For Beauty” show, a tribute to Leonard Cohen at the Sydney Opera House organised by famed music producer Hal Willner.
This documentary includes behind-the-scenes interviews and live performances from this event by Nick Cave, Rufus Wainwright, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Martha Wainwright, Beth Orton, Linda Thompson, Teddy Thompson, Jarvis Cocker, The Handsome Family, Julie Christensen and Perla Batalla, as well as a special performance of “Tower of Song” by Cohen and U2.

In a series of candid interviews, Cohen himself reveals his trademark wry humor and soulful intensity, using his own artwork, poetry and personal collection of photographs to reflect upon his colourful past and his creative process.

Sure to please both diehard Cohen fans and the newly initiated, Lunson’s film is a beautiful record of captivating music, and an intimate portrait of a truly singular artist.

###Special Forces: Ultimate Hell Week - Season 2

From Wednesday 1 February at 8:30pm

The return of the action-packed series that sees super fit men and women take on the challenge of their lives to discover who can survive and ultimately win.

This second series moves the action to South Africa where the competitors have to endure 12 days of physical and mental endurance, masterminded by former members of six of the world’s toughest special forces.

These are physical and mental challenges designed to break the most hardened soldiers – are our competitors tough enough to get through them?

###Hunted - Season 2

From Wednesday 1 February at 9:30pm

Hunted is back for a second series and this time the stakes are even higher as there is £100,000 up for grabs for the fugitives who have enough initiative and cunning to remain on the run for 28 days. The high-octane real-life thriller will once again explore the reach of the state’s surveillance powers by challenging ordinary British people to see if they can outwit and outrun a team of expert professional hunters.

In April 2016 ten fugitives went on the run from one location in Birmingham. They could take with them anything they were able to carry – from tents and food to disguises – given a bank account with £250, and told not to leave mainland UK.

With each fugitive, or pair of fugitives, was an embedded camera operator to capture their every move. 30 minutes after they absconded, the team of professional hunters were given their full names, ages, addresses and mug shots, along with the aerial footage of the initial escape. From that moment the game was on. Would the fugitives be able to keep their nerve and reach the extraction point 28 days later to claim the cash, or a share of it if more than one of them managed to evade detection and capture?

The ‘hunters’ were a crack team of 30 experts, led by highly experienced and respected former Scotland Yard detective, Peter Bleksley. With his deputies by his side – Ben Owen, formerly of the British Intelligence Services, and new team member Louisa Clarke who has worked in military intelligence – their mission was to track down each and every fugitive to stop them from getting their hands on the £100,000 prize.
