Award-winning documentary Songs Inside comes to the ABC this December
The ABC is thrilled to announce feature documentary Songs Inside will air on Monday 1 December at 8:30pm on ABC TV and ABC iview.
This powerful film follows the story of Barkindji singer-songwriter Nancy Bates and her ground-breaking music program to teach women in prison how to play an instrument and write songs about experiences of incarceration.
The women, who come to the program low in confidence and self-worth, are quickly thrown into a world of creativity and blossoming self-determination. Their journey culminates in a historic performance – the largest concert ever staged within an Australian prison, featuring the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and an audience of over 200 inmates and special guests.
Written and directed by Shalom Almond, Songs Inside has captivated audiences and won accolades at Cinefest Oz, Sydney Film Festival and Adelaide Film Festival, and earned a coveted spot in the Official Selection at Melbourne International Film Festival.
Production credit : Songs Inside is a documentary for the ABC. Principal production funding from Screen Australia, in association with South Australian Film Corporation. Financed with support from Minderoo Pictures and Adelaide Film Festival Fund. Local distribution by Bonsai Films.
I had suspected that repeats were on the up during primetime and I was correct! This is from Page 233 of the ABC Annual Report:

EPISODE 3 OF 4 - QSO CINEMATIC: THE OSCARS
SATURDAY 29 NOVEMBER 3.05 PM
Queensland Symphony Orchestra rolls out the red carpet for Cinematic, a glittering musical celebration of the silver screen.
From the galaxy-shaking fanfare of Star Wars to the heart-swelling romance of Titanic, the thrill of James Bond, and the mischief of West Side Story, this is the sound of Hollywood. Cinematic brings blockbuster soundtracks with larger-than-life performances and a full symphony orchestra.
I want an arts program that pumps me with the energy and anticipation that makes me stop everything else to turn on the TV at a particular time. Something like… live sport.
We have hours and hours of sport on our TVs (no complaints, I truly pine for more free-to-air test cricket), but also acres of live pre-match, in-match and post-match reporting. Live interviews at the game, in the locker-rooms, in the stands and in the studio with players and fans and coaches and ex-players and managers and on and on. Why don’t we cover the arts in the same way?
I want to see music and movies and books and theatre discussed and debated in the same style as sports panel shows – experts, pundits, commentators (serious and, importantly, not too serious) talking casually, knowledgeably and with curiosity about how things in the arts went down that week. What stood out? What went under the radar? Who’s making a splash? What’s ahead, who triumphed, who didn’t? Why?
