To be the best, you must compete against the best … a challenge triple j’s Lewis Hobba and Michael Hing enthusiastically accept in Australia’s Best Competition Competition.

Plagued by their inability to win anything, the comedy duo decide to flip the process of entering competitions on its head and take on the task of judging them instead.

Hence the competition, competition. You get it. The quest takes the pair across the country and into the most quirky, unexpected parts of Australia.

From street drag racing and roller hockey to Turkish oil wrestling and an Eisteddfod, Hobba & Hing are on a mission to bestow the crown of Australia’s Best Competition to the competition they deem deserving.

It’s a wild ride that includes semi-naked men, a broken limb, as well as personal AND professional embarrassment that will haunt them for years.

The one-hour TV special will culminate in an epic grand finale in front of a live studio audience where the trophy of trophies for Australia’s Best Competition Competition will be bestowed upon the organiser, mayor, or local star of the winning comp.

May the odds be in your favour Australia!

The Capture - Season 2

From Saturday 1 October 8.30pm

DCI Rachel Carey investigates invisible assassins in the first episode of the new series.

DCI Rachel Carey is living a lonely, paranoid existence, struggling with thwarted ambitions while seconded to Counter Terrorism Command’s ‘mapping’ department. She’s officially joined the highly classified Correction team, but has yet to be truly let in.

When her former colleagues DS Flynn and DI Latif bring the case of a man murdered by invisible assailants to her attention, the stakes quickly become deadly.

Carey’s investigation brings her into the orbit of hotshot politician Isaac Turner MP as the case’s links to national and international security start to emerge. Something is very wrong, but can she work out what before Britain’s security is irrevocably compromised?

And which of her colleagues can she trust?

Stars Holliday Grainger as DCI Rachel Carey, Paapa Essiedu as Isaac Turner, Ben Miles as Commander Danny Hart, Lia Williams as DSU Gemma Garland, Rob Yang as Yan Wanglei, Ginny Holder as DI Nadia Latif, Cavan Clerkin as DS Patrick Flynn.

“Parkinson in Australia” is currently airing on ABC. Tonight’s episode is from 1982 and the sole guest is Elton John. There’s an episode next week too. Am enjoying the show. Got me thinking - i wish there were more of this type of shows on the ABC (the likes of Parkinson and Andrew Denton). I know we have incarnations like One Plus One, but it doesn’t have the same vibe.

Though, we do have The Graham Norton Show over on 10 that’s got a similar format to this, which is a good thing. But ABC does do it better though.

ABC started showing theses as part of their 90th anniversary celebrations. Some of the episodes shown were from the series originally seen on 10.

Australia’s Best Competition Competition

Thursday 27 October 8.30pm

triple j’s Hobba & Hing launch Australia’s Best Competition Competition

Australia is blessed with some of the world’s weirdest competitions. Every town you visit has a race or toss or bake-off that couldn’t exist anywhere else.

We love a competition, but which competition is Australia’s BEST competition?

This is the question triple j’s Lewis Hobba and Michael Hing set out to answer in Australia’s Best Competition Competition which premieres on ABC TV Plus and ABC iview, Thursday October 27 at 8.30pm.

The journey takes the duo to every corner of the country, taking part in this country’s weirdest, wildest, and sometimes oiliest competitions. From Australian classics like wood chopping and the Archibald Prize, to the speed of street racing, the Turkish oil wrestling and more!

Their high-octane exploits result in a broken limb, a lot of semi-nude embarrassment and at least one legitimate victory.

For us, entering these competitions resulted in one broken leg and a lot of broken dreams. This show truly highlights the best of Australia and the worst of our hand-eye coordination”, said Hobba and Hing. “We hope this inspires people to go to new places and try new things, but if not, we hope everyone enjoys watching grown men fall over and hurt themselves.”

In this one-hour TV special, Hobba and Hing score each competition they enter using their own patented rating system and present their findings to a live studio audience as well as representatives from each competition.

Who will walk away with the title of Australia’s Best Competition?

Here is the synopsis of the Boyer Lecture.

Shetland - Season 6

From Saturday 19 November 8.20pm

When a prominent lawyer, Alex Galbraith, is shot dead in broad daylight, Jimmy Perez is called in to investigate.
Galbraith was known across the Isles and notorious for securing the compassionate release from prison of Donna Killick, the murderer of Lizzie Kilmuir. But is this the reason for the murder, or could the real target have been his wife, Eve, who is running as an independent candidate in the upcoming Westminster by-election on a divisive platform?

The team finds plenty of enemies among Galbraith’s recent cases. There’s Lynda Morton. Galbraith helped her husband win custody of their two sons.

Logan Creggan, a veteran accused of war crimes during his tours of Iraq, is another potential suspect. Galbraith refused to defend him. Could Eve’s campaign pledge to restart the government’s war crimes investigations have reopened old wounds? Creggan’s son, Fraser, with his macabre fascination with serial killers, also arouses suspicion.

But then the report of a stolen drone leads the team to Eamon Gauldie, a diver servicing an oil pipeline at the bottom of the North Sea. Believing he may have filmed the Galbraith crime scene, Perez is desperate to speak to him.

Compass: Nude Next Door

Tuesday 15 November 9.30pm

ABC digital reporter Siobhan Marin lifts the lid on the booming business of ‘democratised’ porn – erotica made by everyday people and sold for a subscription fee online.

In this Compass Special, ABC digital reporter Siobhan Marin lifts the lid on the booming business of ‘democratised’ porn – erotica made by everyday people and sold for a subscription fee online – to meet the content makers and explore the risks.

Since the dawn of porn, the erotica industry has been dominated by men and powerful corporations.
Now, just like food delivery and transportation, that model’s being tipped on its head. The porn industry is being democratised thanks to online platforms like Only Fans, where anyone – overwhelmingly women – can make money from producing and sharing their own erotic material.

With the rise of unemployment during the pandemic, it’s no wonder that thousands of prospective content creators have signed up. In the first four months of 2020, some 200,000 Australians joined – more than 5,000 of them as content creators.

However, the promise of big fast money only proves true for a small minority. Most make very little, while Only Fans profits have soared. Many content creators share compromising material, earn very little and then regret losing control over their images.

Siobhan goes behind the scenes and into the bedrooms of young women to ask is this empowerment or more exploitation? What are the risks and dangers involved? Could their reputations, and future job prospects suffer? Or will this help to abolish the stigma around sex work? And do creators face heightened risk of trolling and real-life stalking?

ABC has shows like Planet America and In China Tonight. I’m surprised they dont have a show yet for England politics. They’ve had lots of topics to talk about lately. Lol. Although we do have The Last Leg with Adam Hills that talks about UK politics.

The first of Noel Pearson’s highly anticipated Boyer Lecture series will be shown on Thursday 27 October at 9.30pm on ABC TV and ABC iview.

In Who we were and who we can be Pearson will explore the proposal to amend the Constitution to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Peoples of Australia through a Voice to Parliament.

Pearson says: “In this lecture I will refer to three periods: the past, the present and the prospective future.

Pearson’s lecture series will look at where we are today and what lies ahead for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and all Australians. It will also reflect on where we have come since W.E.H. Stanner’s 1968 Boyer Lectures After the Dreaming.

The series will be broadcast on ABC RN on Sundays in November and available on demand via ABC listen.

From Monday 21 November 8.45pm

Episode 1 of 2

The story of one our most gifted and controversial athletes and how a social media post landed him in the heart of our culture wars.

This two-part documentary is the much-anticipated story of one of Australia’s most gifted and controversial athletes, and how a social media post landed him at the heart of our culture wars, derailing careers in the process.

For the first time Israel Folau’s story is examined in all its multi-layered complexity, featuring crucial Pasifika voices and exploring the nexus between freedom of religion and speech, protection from discrimination for the LGBTQI community, and how far the workplace can reasonably go to balance the two.

PART 1 traces Israel Folau’s upbringing in the devout Christian traditions of the Pasifika community, whose other ‘religion’ is rugby. It follows his meteoric and record setting rise through three football codes, culminating in 73 appearances for the Wallabies.

While initially grappling with the pitfalls of fame and fortune, when his father Eni experiences a major health scare, Folau re-evaluates his choices, setting him on a path that will alter the course of his career and life forever.

Production credit: 2 x 60 mins. An In Films Production. Principal production investment from Screen Australia and developed with support from Screen NSW. ABC Commissioning Editor: Jo Chichester.

Episode 2

Monday 28 November 8.40pm

Folau posts an internet meme that rocks the nation and sees him sacked by Rugby Australia. With insider accounts, this episode unpicks what happens in the hours, days and weeks that follow and shows the impact it had on the Pasifika community – straight and queer.

As he fights his former employer in the courts of justice and public opinion, he finds an ally in the Australian Christian Lobby, becoming a voice in Australia’s political cycle, galvanising forces debating the impact of a proposed religious discrimination bill.
