Extraordinary Escapes - Season 2

image

From Saturday 10 September 6.10pm

UK Broadcaster Sandi Toksvig takes us along with some of Britain’s most fascinating and funny women to awe inspiring locations in search of the nation’s most extraordinary escapes.

In this second series, broadcaster Sandi Toksvig will again make us laugh and lower our heart rates as she takes us along with some of Britain’s most fascinating and funny women to awe inspiring locations in search of the nation’s most extraordinary escapes.

Sandi has been given the keys to some of the very best stays for her and her guests – all properties built to make the most of the stunning landscape around them and offering surprising new adventures on their doorsteps. From a glorious, renovated off-grid home on a remote Scottish island to an astonishing cantilevered home over a river near the Brecon Beacons in Wales to a stunning architecturally extended millkeeper’s cottage, complete with windmill, deep in the Norfolk’s Broads National Park.

Every episode explores a different region and promises lots of adventures and hidden away places offering glorious sanctuary. And with plenty of quiet time along the way, Sandi will take the opportunity to get to know her guests a whole lot more.

Episode 1 - Comedian and author, Sarah Millican, takes a break from her tour to join Sandi in Devon where Sandi hopes to teach her friend the art of rest and relaxation.

Screen Australia funding annoucement.

Still We Rise:

A one-hour archival documentary for the ABC that will capture the year of 1972, when activists erected an Aboriginal Tent Embassy on the lawns opposite Parliament House. Fifty years on, this program takes a bold dive into a year of protest and revolutionary change for First Nations people. Writer/director John Harvey (Off Country) has teamed up with producer Anna Grieve (Looky Looky Here Comes Cooky). Still We Rise is a Tamarind Tree Pictures production financed in association with VicScreen and developed and produced in association with the ABC.

Australia’s Open:

A feature documentary which will chart the highs and lows of our nation alongside our most celebrated individual tennis tournament, the Australian Open. Examining the events that have shaken and shaped it both on and off the court, this film will explore how the evolution of the event has mirrored Australia’s own journey as a nation, from poor colonial cousin to a mature and confident world player. Australia’s Open will be directed by Ili Baré (The Leadership) and produced by Charlotte Wheaton and Nick Batzias of GoodThing Productions, whose credits include The Australian Dream. This project is financed with support from the ABC, VicScreen and the Melbourne International Film Festival Premiere Fund.

Queerstralia:

A three-part series for ABC that sees comedian Zoë Coombs Marr engage with the untold and fascinating queer (LGBTQI+) history of Australia - a place of gay Diggers, lesbian convict gangs, trans pioneers and cross-dressing bushrangers. Queerstralia will be directed by Stamatia Maroupas (Ms Represented), written by Zoë Coombs Marr and Nayuka Gorrie (The Heights), and executive produced by Jon Casimir (You Can’t Ask That). It is financed with support from VicScreen and the Judith Nielsen Institute.

The Black Hand:

A three-part series for ABC that explores an Australian Italian community’s struggle against hard times, extreme politics and the mafia in their midst. Director Kriv Stenders (Slim & I) teams up with writer/producer Adam Grossetti, writer Anya Beyersdorf (Fires), line producer Therese Duranti and producer Kate Pappas (Canopy: Love Letters to Our Trees). The executive producers are Michael Tear (Hating Peter Tatchell), Alan Erson (Playing with Sharks) and Anthony LaPaglia. This documentary is financed with support from the ABC.

The Platypus Guardian:

A one-hour documentary from WildBear Entertainment and Tetrapod Films for the ABC and The WNET Group exploring the secret world of Hobart’s platypus through the eyes of local naturalist Peter Walsh. In the urban heart of the city Pete discovers a hidden community of these mysterious aquatic mammals. Pete forms a unique and intimate bond with one special platypus he calls Zoom who he finds tangled in plastic. Changed by the experience Pete galvanises the community to save Hobart’s last wild platypus. This documentary is directed by Nick Hayward (Quoll Farm), produced by Hayward and Fraser Johnston (Tartarus) and executive produced by Chadden Hunter (Planet Earth 2 & Seven Worlds One Planet) and Bettina Dalton (Playing with Sharks). It is financed with support from Screen Tasmania.

Home: The Story Of Earth

Tuesday 13 September 9:30 PM

Hosted by award winning Science and Technology Journalist Rae Johnston , Home: The story of Earth takes a deep dive into the 4-billion-year-old story of our planet, uncovering the discoveries and breakthroughs that have revealed how Earth’s unique geology, atmosphere, oceanography and geochemistry all intertwine to make Earth the only planet we know if that is habitable, and how these critical natural systems are now under threat, and changing all too rapidly as a result of human activity.

Through the individual and intertwined episode prisms of Land, Water, Air and the Human Planet, this four-part series revisits the discoveries that have revealed how the dynamic nature of the atmosphere, oceans and ever shifting continents shape life on Earth. Fossil finds and satellite imagery have allowed us to paint a picture of terrestrial life and the planet itself with entirely new palettes. We explore plate tectonics and the deep forces that drive them, examine the geology of the depths, the changing chemistry of seawater, and secrets long buried now emerging from rapidly thawing permafrost. We look at changes in the weather systems and how these powerful forces that we’ve only begun to understand impact on the planet-wide ecosystem that underpins all life as we know it.
