Unforgotten - Season 4

From Saturday 19 March 8.30pm

DCI Cassie Stuart and DI Sunny Kahn are back to investigate a cold case with alarming links to the
police force.

The BAFTA-winning hit returns, as DCI Cassie Stuart (Nicola Walker) and DI Sunny Kahn (Sanjeev Bhaskar) investigate a cold case with alarming links to the police force.

A corpse is discovered in a huge scrap yard, buried among mountains of metal. The man’s body has been frozen for some time, and details about his life and death are near-impossible to make out. How long ago did this man die? And did the truth die with him?

With Cassie and Sunny on the case, four murder suspects quickly emerge. The suspects have just one thing in common: they’ve all got connections with the law.

Freddie Mercury: The Final Act

Tuesday 15 March 8.30pm

The extraordinary story of Freddie Mercury’s battle with Aids and the ground-breaking
tribute concert Queen staged in his memory after he died.

The story of the extraordinary final chapter of Freddie Mercury’s life and how, after his death from Aids, Queen staged one of the biggest concerts in history, the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert at Wembley Stadium, to celebrate his life and challenge the prejudices around HIV/Aids.

The film hears from those who performed at the epic gig, including Gary Cherone (Extreme), Roger Daltrey (The Who), Joe Elliott (Def Leppard), Lisa Stansfield and Paul Young, as well as the concert’s promoter, Harvey Goldsmith.

For the first time, Freddie’s story is told alongside the experiences of those who tested positive for HIV and lost loved ones during the same period. Medical practitioners, survivors and human rights campaigners, including Peter Tatchell, recount the intensity of living through the Aids pandemic and the moral panic it brought about.

The Poles Revealed

From Tuesday 22 March 9.30pm

The Poles Revealed begins as Australia’s new icebreaker for science research, the Nuyina, leaves port in the Northern Hemisphere, for her long journey south to Antarctica. Onboard is veteran ABC science reporter Mark Horstman.

Many people imagine the Arctic and Antarctic to be much the same – white, barren icescapes of extreme cold. The first episode Polar Opposites, reveals just how different these landscapes are.

Their differences start with their geography. The Arctic is an ocean, surrounded by continents, while the Antarctic is a continent surrounded by ocean. This influences almost every aspect of their climate, biology and human history.

We see the dazzling display of colour and migration in the Arctic, as warmth hits the north - and are plunged into the depths of a blizzard in the coldest of Antarctic winters. As auroras light up the sky, a mystery that has puzzled humankind for years is finally solved.

We are given a glimpse of the secret lives of krill and find out why whales are important weapons against climate change! This is an episode that makes us fall in love with the polar regions.

Father Brown - Season 9

From Saturday 26 March 7.30pm

The beautiful English countryside is the setting for more charming mysteries featuring the charismatic clergyman sleuth. In the first episode, Sergeant Goodfellow turns to Father Brown when he witnesses Mallory frame an innocent man.

The year is 1953, in the sleepy Cotswold village of Kembleford.

At the Darlington estate Sergeant Goodfellow (John Burton) is alarmed to witness Inspector Mallory (Jack Deam) plant a murder weapon in Lawrence Darlington’s (Ralph Davis) bedroom framing him for his father’s murder. Suspecting Mallory has been compromised Goodfellow informs Father Brown (Mark Williams).

A desperate Mallory is forced to admit that his wife and two children have been taken and he’s got to comply if he wants to see them again. While Mallory keeps up appearances and does everything the kidnapper says, Father Brown, with the help of local barmaid Shelly (Melissa James) start to piece together what they know about the mystery man.

Mallory realises it must be connected to his past somehow. But can they work out who is behind the kidnap and why in time to save Mallory’s family?

That is awesome that ABC doing something better than NZ TV is currently doing at the moment because NZ does not have a prime time science series because of commercialisation of TVNZ 34 years ago

8:00 pm Shane Warne: The Interview

Set and graphics used in yesterday’s coverage. The production needed a bit more light all around - especially on the set.

There’s something about those light reflecting sequins at the front of the desk that don’t quite work on television. They all just end up looking like a mess of colours. Might have looked lot better if they used the rainbow sequins at the top of the set, right across the front of the desk too.

The colours in the ABC logo looked weird too. The bottom half looked rainbow but the top half was greeny blue.

And no single shots to break up long commentary from the presenters. Couldn’t they afford a second camera?

I’m sure I can remember some. They just didn’t use them much.

Maybe later in the night. I gave up watching.

I did find one to cap but they were rare.

Yeah. I wonder if they might have had some technical issues that night.

Jeremy Fernandez was promoted as having a big role in the show alongside Courtney Act and Casey Donovan. Saw lots of Courtney and Casey interviews with parade participants.

We did see some pre-recorded stuff with Jeremy but from memory, I think he was in only two live crosses and he didn’t interview anyone. He was just talking about himself, his outfit and his excitement about being there. :man_shrugging: The first cross also cut out unexpectedly and they did mention technical problems.

So overall, not a lot of advantage to switching public broadcasters.

Yeah. If I was being critical, I’d say you didn’t really need three hosts at the desk.

Hamish Macdonald and Mon Schafter are good presenters but maybe having the two of them so similar was too much. I felt like Steven Oliver wasn’t really up to the presenting job. He’s funny in stand up and sketch comedy but he wasn’t really delivering enough laughs.

Courtney and Casey were great. Courtney is a professional now and can’t fault her. Casey probably needed to conduct some of those interviews with participants to the side of the parade, so she wasn’t holding up the parade. Jeremy should have been used to speak to some audience members or performers.

I still think someone needs to give Courtney Act her own TV show. A variety show with a mix of interviews, performances and comedy could work well.
