Beyond the Towers

From Monday 16 August 9.30pm

Mass murder in New York and Washington by the Al Qaeda terrorist group, led by Osama bin Laden, propelled the United States and its allies, including Australia, into a 20 year war in Afghanistan which they could not win.

Within weeks of the 9/11 attacks the United States led an invasion of Afghanistan. Quick victories – within months routing the Taliban government and Al Qaeda – led to flawed decision-making in Washington. Rejecting advice from military leaders – the administration of President George W. Bush was overly confident that it could control the country with air power and a minimum of “boots on the ground”.

Afghanistan, dominated by powerful warlords with private militias, riven by ethnic and religious tensions and corrupted by the opium industry was a mystery to the invaders . The invaders failed to build a stable national government or, over many years, train reliable security forces.

Taliban and Al Qaeda leaders including Osama bin Laden survived the US invasion by retreating across the border to Pakistan. While officially the Pakistan government was a committed partner in the US declared global “war on terror” in fact sections of the army and the powerful intelligence service, the ISI, were committed to defeating the US. They recruited and re-armed foot soldiers for the Taliban. As the United States became “bogged down” in Iraq after the 2003 invasion the Taliban progressively re-grouped in Afghanistan, gaining territory and becoming a constant threat to the Afghan government.

Afghanistan was to become America’s longest war. In 2020 President Donald Trump agreed to a humiliating deal with the Taliban – negotiations from which the Afghan government were excluded – allowing for the US to withdraw its last remaining troops. Afghanistan in 2021 is once again a haven for Al Qaeda, Islamic State and a host of other Islamic terrorist groups. Overall American power and prestige have been diminished by the Afghan war.

Tells the story of how 19-year-old Christine Keeler found herself at the heart of a political sex scandal that rocked the British government in the 1960s. Based on real events.

Inspired by real events, the six-part series The Trial of Christine Keeler tells the story of 19-yearold Christine Keeler, who was at the centre of the political sex scandal that rocked the British government in the 60s.

Starring Sophie Cookson (Kingsman: The Secret Service, Gypsy), James Norton (Happy Valley, McMafia) and Ben Miles (The Crown), the series takes viewers behind the headlines to tell a human story about the sexual and cultural politics of one of the most revealing and iconic stories of modern times.

When the British Secretary of State for War John Profumo (Ben Miles), started an extramarital affair with Christine Keeler (Sophie Cookson) a much younger woman, it sparked a chain of events that came to be known around the world as the Profumo affair. The repercussions of the affair would shake the establishment to its core.

David Attenborough’s Global Adventure

David Attenborough goes on a unique natural history adventure across the globe and through time.

In his mid-eighties, many thought David Attenborough had retired. Instead, he launched a new era of natural history filmmaking, revisiting iconic locations and using advanced technologies to tell stories about the natural world.

From an adventure in a state-of-the-art submarine on the Great Barrier Reef, to the rainforests of Borneo, David Attenborough’s Global Adventure highlights some of the incredible locations and creatures he visited.

From Galapagos iguanas to King Penguins in South Georgia, and from Peregrines in Rome to the legendary Dodo inside the Natural History Museum, Attenborough shares his insights through breath-taking footage and CGI from multiple BAFTA and Emmy-winning documentaries.

Decoding Danger

Tuesday 31 August 9.30pm

Decoding Danger digs deep into the science behind nature’s greatest threats, to find ways to stay
safe, in Australia and around the world.

Australia is a land of extremes. Apocalyptic fire storms, raging floods, and tropical cyclones, the most venomous creatures in the world, fearsome crocodiles, and deadly sharks. Like few other places in the world, Australia has a reputation for danger.

In a new era in which the role that humans play in natural systems is more critical than ever, it’s time to come to grips with the forces of nature that threaten us.

In this three-part series we dive deep into the science behind nature’s greatest threats… to learn how new technologies and discoveries can help us understand the forces that shape life… in Australia, and around the world.

Technology is exploding at an exponential pace, offering up solutions that would have been unthinkable only a generation ago. Robots can learn to recognise endangered eagles, sharks can be safely repelled by new devices that exploit their million year old biology.

By drawing on ancient Indigenous knowledge and cutting edge digital technologies, we can better prepare for bushfires as they develop into 21st century firestorms. By mimicking the techniques of species that have evolved in the harsh Australian environment, we can learn to draw water out of thin air, and make buildings that breath. And by looking into the Australia’s deep past, we can learn lessons about this harsh land and prepare for the future.

Juanita: A Family Mystery

image

Tuesday 7 and 14 September 8.30pm

Journalist Juanita Nielsen’s family pursue the truth about her infamous 1975 disappearance. Revelations about Juanita’s almost certain murder and remarkable life go to who killed her, why and how justice was denied.

Juanita: A Family Mystery delves into one of this country’s biggest crime mysteries – the 1975 disappearance of Kings Cross activist Juanita Nielsen. The unmissable two-part series follows Juanita’s family members, Keiran McGee and Pip Rey, as they work alongside the ABC’s award-winning Unravel True Crime podcast team, to uncover the truth behind Juanita’s mysterious disappearance.

Sophisticated and fiercely intelligent, with her trademark beehive hair, Juanita Nielsen was a well-known Kings Cross resident and editor of the local paper. In the early 70s, she grew increasingly dismayed at the changing fabric of her community and became a vocal and active opponent of property developers, who were pushing to build high rise apartments. Her influence and activity certainly got her noticed.

Kings Cross in the 70s was rife with criminals linked to corrupt police and politicians. Despite knowing this, Juanita agreed to meet with a local businessman who not only had questionable connections but the meeting venue, the notorious Carousel Club, was well-known for its underworld connections. Juanita went to the meeting and was never seen again.

Featuring compelling archival footage, actual voice recordings of Juanita and intimate interviews with friends and family as well as an investigator and an underworld figure who have never spoken publicly before, Juanita: A Family Mystery brings to life Juanita’s world, and pieces together the events leading up to her disappearance.
Determined to probe unflinchingly into the speculation surrounding Juanita’s disappearance, Keiran and Pip wade through coroner transcripts, interviews, and police reports in an effort to uncover the truth. As they dive deeper into their investigation, new information and never-before heard witness recollections are revealed. Will Keiran and Pip get the answers to provide closure for their family and finally solve this case that has intrigued the public for over 40 years?

How To Live Younger

From Tuesday 21 September 9.30pm

How To Live Younger is a scientific guide to beating disease. The scientists in this series show we have more control over our health than we ever imagined. They’ve discovered it’s easier than we thought to extend life, dodge disease and ignite the one thing we desire the most… happiness.

Hosted by author and ABC Radio’s Jacinta Parsons, the series cuts through the ‘wellness’ hype, revealing rigorous and robust scientific research that shows how we can prolong our time here on earth.

In the past, if we were lucky, we’d live till 80 but the idea that we’d spend the last 15 years slowly deteriorating seemed an unavoidable (and depressing) fate. Now scientists believe that we can increase our “healthspan” and live more active, healthy and enjoyable years on this planet. Remarkably, they’ve found that many of the ‘diseases of ageing’, like heart disease, Alzheimer’s, diabetes and depression, could be preventable.

In labs around the world, scientists are trialling, testing and analysing a range of weapons that could help us stay healthier for longer. They have made incredible progress, weaponising microbes to fight depression, repurposing anxiety medications to stop cancer, as well as using “fast” diets, mindfulness, exercise, urban design and even using ‘random acts of kindness’ to ward off disease.

In the first episode, Jacinta takes a deep dive into exercise, exploring how the simple act of moving can improve the health of our bodies and our brains. Scientists at top institutions around the world reveal how exercise can rewind the clock on cognitive decline, fight cancer, prevent disease, beat depression and even enhance our lives by making us smarter, more creative human beings.

Des

From Friday 24 September 8.30pm

Des is a chilling true-crime drama focusing on one of the most infamous serial killers in UK history – DENNIS NILSEN. Known as the ‘kindly killer’, Nilsen (played by David Tennant) was a local civil servant who spent five years murdering boys and young men he met on the streets of Soho from 1978 to 1983.

He would meet and befriend these men before offering them food or lodgings for the evening back at his North London flat. His victims were often homeless or living off grid, having slipped through the cracks of 1980s society and were therefore welcoming of this stranger’s apparent generosity. When he was finally caught on 9 February 1983, Nilsen had murdered a total of fifteen men over a period of five years, making him Britain’s most prolific serial killer of the time.

After his arrest, Nilsen was astonishing in his honesty: admitting outright to all fifteen murders in the police car outside his flat. But infuriatingly for the investigating detectives, he couldn’t remember any of his victims’ names. With no apparent motive, inconclusive forensic evidence and most of Nilsen’s victims living off-grid, the police started the biggest manhunt investigation in UK history. This time not for the murderer, but for the murdered.

The story is told through the prism of three isolated men - a detective, a biographer, and Nilsen himself. While DETECTIVE PETER JAY and the police investigation’s attempt to get justice for as many victims as possible provides the narrative and emotional spine, the relationship between NILSEN and his biographer BRIAN MASTERS allows us to delve into the mind of one of the most emotionally elusive serial killers the world has ever seen. Can we ever really understand the mind of a psychopathic killer? And, if we try, what price do we pay?

Capital

From: Friday 24 September 9.20pm

From the makers of Humans and Broadchurch, and based on John Lanchester’s best-selling book, Capital is a portrait of a fictional road transformed by soaring property prices: what was once the home of modest lowermiddle class families, Pepys Road has been continuously gentrified into a street of multi-million pound houses.

One day, the street’s residents all receive an anonymous postcard through their front doors bearing a simple message: “We Want What You Have”. Who is behind the anonymous hate campaign? And what do they want?

As the mystery of the postcards deepens, interweaving stories reveal lives filled with love and loss, fear and greed, fortune and envy and, at its heart, family and home.

Production credits: A Kudos production for BBC.

It will be FTA premiere, it debuted on Stan in September 2020.

9/11: Life Under Attack

image

Thursday 9 September at 9:30 pm

9/11 was the first major news event in the age of digital cameras and voicemails. This remarkable film tells the never-before-told stories of that day, created through a tapestry of previously unseen video and unheard audio. Without interview or commentary, this is a portrait of an unfolding tragedy told through those who witnessed it first-hand, in fear for their lives but compelled to chronicle the collapse of everyday life surrounding them.

Anthony Burke, professor and history buff, follows homeowners across the country as they passionately restore beautiful heritage homes on the brink of ruin.

Across the country, thousands of heritage buildings lie in ruin – forgotten, neglected and slowly decaying into the landscape. But these are more than just crumbling old homes – they are touchstones to our past.

Over each episode of the latest series, Anthony Burke, professor and history buff, follows homeowners across the country as they passionately restore tired and ageing heritage homes and bring them back to life. From signalman’s quarters, to a Mid-Century relic, from an 1850s workers cottage, to a Queen Anne Federation home, we start at the beginning of each homeowner.
