This morning’s WNBL broadcast rights announcement means there is no live sport left on the ABC’s TV schedule. It marks the end of the slow decline from the 1970s when the public broadcaster covered a wide range of sporting events, including Test cricket, Paralympic Games, state rugby league and Aussie Rules competitions, rugby union, yachting, tennis, soccer, basketball, golf, netball, cycling and even American football (who can forget the Tuesday night highlights show hosted by Don Lane in the early 1990s?). Just sad.

Hopefully better federal government funding means the ABC can show live sport again on TV in the future.

Sunday Herald Sun’s Jon Anderson wrote today the ABC could be screening live sport once again.

The column appears to suggest that a potential agreement between DAZN and the ABC could allow for the rebroadcast of Fox Cricket’s coverage of Sheffield Shield matches — either as a full, direct simulcast with ABC-hosted opt-outs where necessary, or featuring an ABC-produced commentary track.

“Fox Cricket”'s coverage, the CN livestream with a Fox logo slapped on Kayo.

Which games do they do Grandstand coverage of?

Shield cricket would make no sense for the ABC, very low interest and huge amounts of the schedule needed.

WNCL/One Day Cup would make more sense, but too late to start coverage now. Most of it is already freely available on the cricket website, so doesn’t really achieve an objective of expanding access.

If they do get Shield Cricket, I’d imagine it would be shunted to ABC2 or whatever it’s called now.

To be fair, ABC’s main channel isn’t full of new programming anyway during the day. In aedt states, it only as ABC News Mornings at 9am for an hour, the News at Noon (both simulcast on ABC News), and the odd Parliament Question Time too (again, simulcast on the News Channel). The Sheffield Shield could work on the main channels in most cities?

Sheffield Shield or random sports is a waste unless there’s a strategy to it. A sports channel would make sense. Something like what One HD used to be

Hopefully there will be an announcement around the time of State of Origin match from Perth this Saturday.

If ABC get it will be be main channel in Victoria or ABC Entertains everywhere?
I wonder if that’s why the ABC’s adult multichannel was moved from 7.30pm after ABC Kids to a 24/7 channel to account for sports rights as they have been interested without disrupting the main channel

You’d expect ABC TV Victoria (main channel) to carry whatever broadcast slot or slots are allocated to them by the league, as this would align with their previous level of involvement. ABC could then promote iView as the streaming option for interstate viewers.
