She has co-anchored ABC7 Eyewitness News at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., along with her dear friend David Ono. Since joining ABC7 in 1995, Ellen has served as a health reporter and has anchored several other newscasts, including morning and midday.
Leyva will still be anchoring at ABC7 for a few more months.
An update on ABC’s move to lower Manhattan…
Nightline and ABC News Live were relocated over the past two weeks. The former set was done by Lighting Design Group, who also done CBS’ new Evening News set.

Some in-studio shots for the former:
For the latter, the move coincided with the streamer’s 5th anniversary, and they have a new branding to celebrate. Domino-like folders are in for the openers:
The daytime news, News Live First - a familiar name with a familiar colour tone. Like CBS, the floor is a screen too:
The pushback:
Breaking News mode - the Carter funeral card with the NL frosted glass:
News Live from DC:
News Live Reports from LA:
And finally, News Live Prime:
- The openers look … sexy? Not sure it’s the right word for it.
- but what’s with the centering of their sub-brands (exc. Prime)?
- The swirly backdrop for pushback etc looks nice, though a bit similar to NBC
- The rounded supers looks more refined, especially the bug - makes it look less like a YouTube channel W/M and more like a channel branding
- The studio is a bit small, but at least the newsdesk seems movable…
- Wonder when will World News Tonight relocate and change their stuffy graphics!
I imagine WNT will simply replicate their current set look in the new space. They seem to make a point of limiting the set to close ups and video walls.
I miss the days of Charles Gibson moving around to different parts of the set to present stories.
WABC New York has moved to a new studio. World of difference with the lighting.
Hopefully they can address the audio echo though.
Bad sound seems to be an issue with new studios, was it Chicago that had a new streetside studio recently that also had a bad echo?
The move was preceded by an elaborate send-off from Friday to Saturday morning, including Chief Meteorologist Lee Goldberg’s nods to the old place:
The extended theme and slow zoom out outside the studio to end the 6pm bulletin were also nice touches:
And the final farewell from 9am news the next morning:
The new set looks much more modern and spacious, especially with the newsdesk now without a gigantic logo that resembles faux movie sets. The hovering 7 logo on the ceiling feels grand - apt for the #1 market.
Before that, WTVD debuted a new studio in Raleigh, after coming out from Durham for over 6 years.
Not as distinctive, but it’s kind of nice - the branding on the newsdesk comically small though, like they ordered a wrong size
Though I don’t think the Durham set has aged that much - except the small TV pillars.
It’s great that they paid the old space some tribute. I always thought it was the coolest thing having a living, breathing TV news set in my neighbourhood.
The times I walked past when there was a bulletin or update being filmed, there never seemed to be more than a few people looking in. Sometimes (usually if I was out late) there’d be no one watching, just a few furtive glances from people walking past. Because of that I never stayed around to look and loiter (plus, I probably had some place I needed to be 5 minutes ago).
Some other New York skylines for the daytime weekday bulletins on Monday - the 10am one looked especially washed out against the yellow accent lighting (which looks sharp BTW):
Other 10am snaps - a cross to The View next door about the new home, plus a preview of the Noon bulletin with David Novarro. Didn’t realize the echo in the set until the The View cross - both sides have some serious issues!
This feels like what Nine’s larger studio should’ve been like. This looks super classy unlike Nine’s cold and concrete space.
Australian version theme???
This local news broadcast in Amarillo, Texas has moved to a completely anchorless format.
Feels so cheap. Wonder if any of our local news would ever go down this route (hopefully not)
When does GMA moved into 7 Hudson Square??
Think I’d almost see the opposite, one anchor just reading hedlines with vision etc.
Not a fan
In the US summer.
Don’t show 10 News First! Another way to cut costs
nah I don’t think 10 would stoop that low (hopefully)
If I had to pick a network to do this, it’d be WIN.
Certainly not advocating for it, but see no reason it couldn’t be done well if they ever did. The anchor is just reading the scripts the reporter wrote anyway.
Not too dissimilar to CityNews for quite a few years in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary. Reporters in the field with stand ups/look lives and I think live stand ups. No anchors.
They’ve sinced moved to an anchor in Vancouver - though our Canadian posters will have to advise if they’re “names” and how it rates!
