Tinsel, Tears and Turkeys: AN Aussie Christmas Unwrapped

Sunday 24 December at 6:00pm

image

It’s Christmas time. Again. Do you say, “Bring it on, or bah humbug?”

In this one-hour special, high profile Australians talk about Christmas. What they enjoy, and what irks them about the silly season.

Do you do turkey and steamed pud, or seafood and pav? A real tree or one you can recycle each year? Stacks of presents or Kris Kringle? However you celebrate - or not - it’s a season filled with expectation and hope that can bring out the best and worst in us all.

Don your paper crown (or don’t), and join us as we trip through Christmases past and present with a distinctly Australian flavour.

Featuring Anthony Albanese, Dr Anne Aly, Jimmy Barnes, Julie Bishop, Kate Ceberano, Joel Creasey, Bill Crews, Bob Downe, Marcia Hines, Col Joye, Gretel Killeen, Kylie Kwong, Benjamin Law, Lawrence Leung, Nakkiah Lui, Kelly O’Dwyer, Christopher Pyne, John Safran, Akmal Saleh, Red Symons.

How To Stay Young - Season 2

Tuesday 2 January at 8:00pm

You may be free from grey hairs and wrinkles, but do your insides tell a different story? The team examine the science behind getting old, and help ordinary people slow down the speed at which they’re ageing.

Fake or Fortune? Season 6

Tuesday 2 January at 9:00pm

image

Fake or Fortune? returns for a sixth series as art detectives Philip Mould and Fiona Bruce investigate more thrilling cases of art world mystery, intrigue, and deception. In the first episode of a brand-new series, the team take on one of the most important cases they’ve ever faced.

The team try to find out whether a beautiful English landscape is a work of national importance - a lost masterpiece by John Constable and quite possibly an alternative view of his greatest work, ‘The Hay Wain’. Now owned by a British businessman, the painting appears to have all the hallmarks of Constable’s sketches - his more impressionistic, preparatory works. If genuine, it could be worth at least £2 million.

There are few more iconic paintings in British art than Constable’s ‘The Hay Wain’. A picture with a direct link to this
milestone in British art would be the holy grail for any collector or museum and the picture appears to depict the very same scene, Willy Lott’s cottage on the banks of the River Stour.

The trouble is, Constable is one of the most faked artists of the 19th century, and the painting has a chequered past.

Thirty years ago, several top Constable experts decided that it was not an authentic work. It is a particularly personal case for Philip Mould, who briefly owned the painting in the past but had to let it slip through his fingers after he failed in his attempts to prove its authenticity. Now scientific analysis techniques have moved on and neglected records can be searched more deeply online, can the latest advances and deep research into the picture’s provenance turn up enough evidence to prove that it is a genuine work by John Constable?

Harry Potter: A History of Magic

Tuesday 26 December at 8:30pm

image

It’s 20 years since J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone first cast its spell on readers across the globe, thanks to the charm, warmth and imagination of its wizarding world. But Rowling’s fantastical creation wasn’t entirely make-believe…

To mark the 20th anniversary of her book, the award-winning BBC Documentary Unit presents an enchanting new documentary, tracing the real-life traditions of magic at the heart of Harry Potter. Narrated by Imelda Staunton, this is a playful and thrilling adventure through the real-life legends, beliefs and folklore that fired JK Rowling’s imagination. In the run up to the major exhibition, Harry Potter:

A History of Magic, Rowling ventures behind the scenes of the British Library, revealing the reallife counterparts to her fantastical world. From shrieking mandrakes and Elizabethan invisibility spells; to the mystery of the ancient oracle bones of the lost Shang dynasty and the real-life search for the Philosopher’s Stone, it’s the start of a journey that takes us to some of the most magical places in the land. There, we’ll encounter wonderful characters whose belief in magic has never waned – from the folk at the beguiling Museum of Witchcraft in Boscastle, Cornwall, to a pair of real life wizarding wandmakers who’ve honed their craft in England’s ancient woodland.
Beneath the surface of this rip-roaring adventure is a surprisingly touching story of human frailty, desire and discovery. To JK Rowling magic has always been more than just waving a wand: it’s a window into the hopes and fears of humankind - revealing our deep-seated need to control the uncertainty of life. It’s a theme embedded at the heart of the Harry Potter books, and Rowling shares never-before seen items from her personal archive - the drawings, doodles and early drafts that led to her own unmistakable vision.

JK Rowling’s writing is brought to life with readings from actors from the Harry Potter films: David Thewlis, Evanna Lynch, Warwick Davies, Miriam Margoyles and Mark Williams; while illustrator Jim Kay illuminates Rowling’s imaginary world. Production details: Narrator Imelda Staunton; Director Jude Ho; Executive Producer Janet Lee; A BBC Studios Production

It was scheduled for November last year but was pulled in last minute due to legal issues unrelated to the content, according to filmmaker Aviva Ziegler.

Death in Paradise - Season 6

From Saturday 3 February at 7:30pm

image

The sun-soaked, popular whodunit series DEATH IN PARADISE returns, as DI Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall) hopes to find love on the idyllic island of Saint Marie.

This series finds DI Humphrey Goodman eagerly awaiting the return of Martha (Sally Bretton), an old acquaintance from London. But as soon as she arrives on the island, their burgeoning romance is put to the test by an untimely murder…

DS Florence Cassell (Joséphine Jobert) becomes emotionally involved in a case when an old schoolmate is found dead, and she realises the only way to right a past wrong is to find justice for her friend in the present. Meanwhile, a surprise encounter rakes up long-buried memories for Dwayne (Danny John-Jules), and JP (Tobi Bakare) is struggling with the realities of married life.

From a cricket club president murdered in the middle of the pitch, to a scientist found dead halfway up a volcano, there are more fiendishly difficult puzzles for the team to tackle in this eight-part series. And a seemingly unsolvable case takes Humphry and the team to London, in a special two-part story.

At the end of the Gardening Australia Christmas Special last night, host Costa said that the show is returning to our screens in 2018, but in a new timeslot. He said it will air on Friday nights, at 7.30pm, as one-hour-long episodes, starting on the 26th of January.

Gardening Australia competing against Better Homes & Gardens and The Living Room? I really don’t like the sound of that idea…
