As part of Australia Talks the ABC has been sharing some interesting findings over the past couple of weeks, but we’ve been saving the best bits for this one-off TV special.
On 18 November, join host Annabel Crabb, with co-host The Project’s Waleed Aly , as they uncover some unexpected and surprising insights into the issues big and small that get Australia talking.

Quilty: Painting The Shadows

Quilty: Painting the Shadows documents the most recent shift in the work of one of Australia’s leading contemporary artists, Ben Quilty; a growing interest in our national history and the dark corners of our past.
With the permission of the Gamilaraay Elders, Quilty travels to Myall Creek, Northern NSW. On the afternoon of Sunday 10 June 1838, 12 stockmen brutally slaughtered a group of 28 Aboriginal men, women and children camped peacefully at the station of Myall Creek. The massacre has special significance, marking the only time in the colonial period that white men were arrested, charged and hung for the massacre. The film follows Quilty’s exploration of the subject over many months.
An artist with profound commitment to social activism fuelled by a boundless curiosity about the human condition, Quilty won the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize (2009) and the Archibald Portrait Prize (2011) with his remarkable portrait of Margaret Olley. Later that year, he went to Afghanistan as an official war artist, commissioned by the Australian War Memorial. What followed was a remarkable series of portraits of soldiers that addressed the emotional and psychological impact of their service.
Quilty’s career to date has been kaleidoscopic – while people are aware of certain facets of his life and causes, there has been little attempt to understand him as a painter.
Director Catherine Hunter, who first filmed Quilty more than 10 years ago has been granted unprecedented access to his process and seeks to bring the fractured portrait of the man and the painter into sharper view.
Silent No More

Veteran journalist, turned accidental advocate, Tracey Spicer AM presents a revelatory series Silent No More on the ABC and iview on Mondays at 8:30pm from 25 November.
Over three episodes, Tracey explores how #MeToo is changing Australia, tackling the confusion and backlash caused by the movement. She speaks to ordinary Australians who bravely share their experiences, looks at how the system must be reformed, and explores how #MeToo can be the catalyst for positive change for everyone, regardless of gender.
More than a decade after Tarana Burke started the Me Too movement in the United States, the hashtag went viral in response to sexual abuse allegations against producer Harvey Weinstein. Following this, Tracey sent a tweet asking Australians if they had experienced their own #MeToo moments. She was inundated by women, and some men, from all kinds of workplaces, sharing horrifying stories of sexual harassment and assault. As the number of messages grew from hundreds to thousands, Tracey became committed to amplifying their stories, and agitating for change.
Throughout Silent No More, Tracey travels across the country, hearing accounts from women in a variety of industries including mining, real estate, the postal sector and farming, who have spoken publicly for the first time. As Gretta, Mandy, Summer, ‘Mariam’ and Abby share their stories, we see firsthand the toll workplace sexual harassment has taken on them.
We’re with Tracey as the Australian government responds to #MeToo, announcing a world-first National Inquiry, and as she supports those who are tackling the system. Unfortunately, as the momentum for change grows, so too does the backlash, and it becomes more apparent than ever that men and women need to unite to drive reform. 18 months into her journey, Tracey reflects on changes she has seen at both a grassroots and top level and examines how we can eliminate sexual harassment for the next generation.
Throughout the series we hear from the founder of Rites of Passage Dr Arne Rubinstein, who is helping young Australians navigate their formative adolescent years, and Executive Director of Belong Ben Burge, a staunch advocate for promoting healthy corporate workplace culture, who believes psychological safety is the key to improving productivity.
We meet a bar worker, Nikki, who pioneered Melbourne’s Respect is the Rule campaign, and a migrant fruit packer, ‘Mariam’, who stood up to her assaulter. Other contributors include one of Australia’s leading employment lawyers, Josh Bornstein, who provides insight into the complex legal process victims may face against often highly resourced defendants; and human resources strategist, Dr Rebecca Michalak, who says sexual harassment should be seen squarely as a Work Health and Safety issue.
Silent No More is an engrossing series, taking us through the confusion, anger and catharsis created by #MeToo, encouraging conversation in our homes, schools and workplaces. The series demonstrates we are at a crossroads, with the opportunity for Australia to lead the way in finding solutions to make our workplaces, and society, safer for all.

But Michael struggled with the idea of success, the creative limits of pop stardom and how to express his integrity; a longing that shaped his life and music and gave birth to a desire to go far beyond the constraints of pop.
A violent event strikes Michael and changes his life forever, fracturing his sense of self and robbing him of his connection to life. Made vulnerable, he is unable to navigate the complex challenges he faces moving forward and he has little defence against the onslaught of tabloid press that descends upon his world. Amidst the encroaching darkness, Michael’s new-born daughter, Tiger, becomes his one bright light.
Richard Lowenstein directed the majority of both INXS and Michael’s music videos and the 1986 feature film, Dogs in Space, in which Michael played the lead.

Celebrating the Legendary ABC music show Recovery, host Dylan Lewis will take you on a blissfully chaotic ride through the show’s best performances, interviews and moments. Joining Dylan are some of his Recovery co-hosts including Jane Gazzo, film reviewer turned Hollywood director Leigh Whannell and the ever-mysterious The Enforcer. Also along for the ride are the musicians who were there, re-Living their Recovery experiences and sharing their insights on the 90s and what the beloved show meant to them.
Dishing the dirt are Bernard Fanning, Tim Rogers, Killing Heidi, members of Silverchair, Spiderbait, Regurgitator, Something for Kate, Magic Dirt, Jebediah, The Living End, The Superjesus, amongst many more.
From 1996 to 2000, Recovery was compulsory viewing for a generation of Australians who tuned in every Saturday morning at 9am for three hours of anarchic television. Local and international artists performed Live, Hollywood stars dropped by to spruik their Latest film and the audience was never quite sure what they’d just witnessed and what mayhem was up next.
Relive the original Recovery experience on a Saturday morning when Dylan takes over the Rage couch to reclaim his 9 o’clock timeslot with a special age-appropriate presentation of Recovery: The Music and the Mayhem. The one hour romp through all that was right (and so wrong) about Recovery, will be followed with Dylan’s pick of some of the most revered and regaled live performances from the vault by the likes of You Am I, TISM, Regurgitator, Magic Dirt, Powderfinger and Silverchair.
For those who grew up with Recovery but now find their Saturday mornings devoted to adulting: the ruder, louder, uncut version will screen on Wednesday 27 November at 9.00pm.
For fans wanting more, additional Recovery content will appear on iview and YouTube immediately following the broadcast on 27 November including full performances and extended interviews.

Filmed in Sydney, set against a full-size replica of Edinburgh Castle, the renowned Scottish spectacular features a cast of more than 1500 making it the largest Tattoo ever in its 69-year history. Unrivalled in its pageantry, this historic Tattoo is hosted by ABC’s Jeremy Fernandez and Kumi Taguchi, with exclusive backstage interviews by ABC Classics presenter Russell Torrance.
Fourteen nations from around the world are represented, including the UK, Switzerland, France, Tonga, Fiji, Cook Islands, New Zealand and Australia as well as for the first time ever, acts from Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Samoa and Vanuatu.
The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo Sydney 2019 features all the hallmark elements of this world-famous military and cultural event, including traditional crowd favourite songs Auld Lang Syne and Scotland The Brave and contemporary favourites, as well as a special performance by John Paul Young, singing his much-loved classic, Love Is In The Air, joined by the entire cast of the Sydney 2019 Tattoo. The event features world-class pipes and drums, military marching, traditional and colourful costumes, and breath-taking special effects.
