Aftermath: Beyond Black Saturday

image

Sunday 3 February at 7:40pm

In February 2009, the worst bushfires in Australian history ripped through Victoria in a series of firestorms so powerful that a million acres went up in flames, seven thousand Australians lost their homes and 173 people lost their lives.

Ten years later, Aftermath chronicles the personal stories of the people who survived the Black Saturday infernos to discover how they coped with unimaginable loss and trauma and how they picked up the pieces of their shattered lives.

While the 2009 Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission forensically documented the public response to the Black Saturday infernos, Aftermath tells the intimate and often anguished personal stories of an ensemble cast of volunteer firefighters and local residents whose lives were turned upside down by the fires.

The ordinary people featured in Aftermath all experienced the same extraordinary traumatic event, but each of them experienced it differently and each had to find their own roadmap through the wreckage that it made of their lives.

By interweaving their stories, the film underlines how there’s no sure-fire path to recovery from trauma, and no cheat notes to help piece the jigsaw of a life back together again.

As the ten-year anniversary of Black Saturday approaches, Aftermath explores the long-term impact of Australia’s worst bushfires by giving each of the featured survivors the opportunity to reflect on their personal road to recovery, and the chance to make sense of the unexpected trajectory their life has taken in its wake.

This landmark documentary chronicles the challenging journey many Black Saturday survivors have been on in the decade since the firestorms transformed their lives. Out of the ashes of one of Australia’s worst natural disasters, emerges a film not about death and destruction but about the tenacity of life and the extraordinary resilience of the human spirit.

China Love

Sunday 3 February at 9:40pm

China Love takes us on a billion-dollar ride of fantasy exploring contemporary China through the window of the pre wedding photography industry. The film is a feature length observational documentary which follows Chinese and Australian participants as they navigate love, weddings and family in the lead up to the most important ritual of Chinese society – getting married.

Gardening Australia - 30th BIRTHDAY SPECIAL

image

Friday 15 February at 7:30pm

Do you remember what you were doing in 1990? Jerry Coleby-Williams is asking the question. Did you visit a newly unified Berlin? Had you heard about that new thing called ‘the net’? Maybe you’d just got a newfangled ‘mobile’ phone?

A lot of things were new in 1990 but none more ground breaking, quite literally, than ABC TV’s new national program Gardening Australia. Gardening Australia is turning 30 and we are ready to party with a 90-minute Gardening Australia birthday special! Join the team as they gather in one of Australia’s most iconic gardens, on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, to celebrate the colour, characters and compost that make Australian gardening great.

Ever wondered what’s behind Costa Georgiadis’ beard? Well, all will be revealed, as we find out what led Costa to host one of Australia’s most iconic shows. From his landscaping achievements to his questionable musical talents - we reveal more than you may want to see! We catch up with former host, rare plant specialist Stephen Ryan, in his incredible Mt. Macedon garden and Tino Carnevale looks back at where it all began, with his friend and mentor, the one and only Peter ‘Kale’ Cundall.

We dig-up some treasures from the Gardening Australia vault and discover the history of gardening on ABC TV before GA hit our screens. We laugh along at some of the many parodies of the show over the years and Millie Ross – with the aid of Squid the dog - takes you behind the scenes of the program, showing you how GA is made.

Jane Edmanson meets one of our most influential garden designers to discuss the Aussie backyard, what has shaped them and how they have shaped us, while Josh Byrne investigates our future, visiting a research project looking into species that will cope with a changing climate.

Sophie Thomson explores our location, the historic Heronswood gardens to look at their showcase of edible and experimental species while Clarence Slockee heads to The Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria’s award-winning Australian Garden, at Cranbourne where he tracks down the very best in Aussie plants. Plus, there’s a generous sprinkle of celebrity well wishes, cake, and a garden inspired band.

Join us as we celebrate the program that has grown well beyond its roots and dug deep into the hearts, minds and gardens of Australia. In a world filled with bad news, come join us for 90-minutes of joy, nostalgia, laughter and beautiful gardens.

Gardening Australia: practical, inspiring, fragrant, fun, delicious and still dirty at 30!

I notice ABC’s release last month regarding Australia Day programming did not mention the Sydney concert, although next week’s listing has TBA from 7.30pm to 10.30pm on January 26. Perhaps the concert will be a late addition? Also, why is it rated MA given it is an all-ages concert with tickets to be given out this Wednesday (January 16)?

Why is this listed as a new series? Its just the original Hard Quiz right? So shouldn’t it be a series return?

Edit You can delete this I think it was amended before I posted this reply.

Season 3 - Episode 22 is on 30 January then Series 4 starts 6 February so ABC have listed it as “New Series”.
