Joanna Lumley’s Silk Road Adventure

image

23 September at 7:40pm

“I’m embarking on a 7000-mile journey following the route of the legendary Silk Road, that throughout history helped spread all manner of foods, inventions and cultures across Asia and Europe…my most adventurous and exotic journey yet.” Joanna Lumley.

This epic new four-part series is Joanna Lumley’s grandest and most challenging journey so far, a breath-taking odyssey from Venice to the Chinese border along the veins of the ancient Silk Road.

A perilous network of paths, the Silk Road shaped the modern world, bringing silk, printing, spices, gunpowder, and many other things to the West. Joanna’s adventure will see her travel through a breath-taking array of fabulous landscapes as she crosses continents, deserts, mountains and steppes, boldly following in the footsteps of the merchants, conquerors, kings and pilgrims who once lived and died along this route.

Constitutional crises and scandalous romances blossoming at court; the rise of the Chartist movement; the devastating Irish Potato Famine; and perilous diplomatic relations that see Victoria travelling to France to try her hand at foreign policy.

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert (Tom Hughes) brave each trial on the world stage while also confronting profound personal changes. Facing down loss and betrayal against a dizzying backdrop
of their expanding family, royal duties and an adventure to Scotland, they must renegotiate the balance of power in their passionate marriage if they are to thrive as the world’s most influential partnership.

Note: ABC has not indicated any variation across markets.

Why does the ABC schedule it for the odd time of 7.40pm even though it is not showing any 50-minute long shows from overseas?

ABC News Sunday is 40 minutes.

And why does the ABC describe the Sunday edition of Invictus Games Today as a “lively half hour” when it is 50 mins.

I highly recommend the ABC special Tick Fucking Tock if you are a fan of the Doug Anthony Allstars. Just caught part one on iView and was blown away by the emotional roller coaster ride. Was pissing myself laughing throughout most of it but was in tears by the end as Tim explained why the group broke up at the height of their success. Looking forward to part two next Tuesday.

It was extended to 40 minutes to cater for those 50 minute shows thus the 8.30pm programs can start on time. For special events like Invictus Games and one hour programs, the news should be cut back to 30 minutes.

Don’t Stop the Music

image

From Sunday 11 November at 7:40pm

What happens when you give young disadvantaged kids access to a state of the art music program? The results will excite, shock, and surprise as lives are transformed through the power of music.

I thought it was to replace the local 7:30 editions to provide an opportunity for longer form state based reports in the news, although it’s normally a national package that makes it to air now.
