Loch Ness

image

From Thursday 30 August at 8:50pm

Beneath the waters of Loch Ness, we see the pigment bleached body of an unidentified middleaged man, curling stones tied to his ankles.

On her day off, Det Sergeant Annie Redford (Laura Fraser) is called upon by her boss DCI Frank Smilie (John Sessions) to clear up a gory prank, which reporters are claiming with tongue in cheek, to be the washed-up remains of the Loch Ness Monster. Annie, with a raging hangover, heads to the lochside where the inexperienced PC Jason Denny (Murray Fraser) helps her clear up the decaying animal entrails. Among the remains Jason finds a heart, which he bags.

Meanwhile, piano teacher Niall Swift (Jordan McCurrach) is sacked by widower Dr Marr (John Heffenan), for giving his daughter inappropriate music. When Swift accuses Marr of hypocrisy an argument ensues. Shortly afterwards Swift receives a text from someone who wants to meet him at a local beauty spot. A couple of hours later we see college principal, Craig Petrie (Alastair MacKenzie), in full running gear, standing over Swift’s twisted, broken, blooded body as it lies at the foot of a cliff. Before Petrie calls for help, he pockets Swift’s phone.

The pathologist ascertains that Swift was murdered and a sliver of his brain was removed. DCI Lauren Quigley (Siobhan Finneran) is seconded to the case to head up the investigation and is later joined by forensic psychologist Blake Albrighton (Don Gilet), whom she drafts in, much to Smilie’s dismay. Annie shows Quigley the spot where Swift was killed and finds a newspaper from the day of the murder in a gully nearby.

The investigation is further complicated when the heart Jason found among the animal remains turns out to be human. The teenagers responsible for the prank, Jonjo (Keiran Gallacher), Kieran (Jack Bannon) and Annie’s daughter Evie (Shona McHugh), are brought in for questioning, and Annie, now compromised, is off the case, causing tensions at home.

Elsewhere, we meet Kieran’s brother Jordan (Oliver Greenall), a young man with locked-in syndrome who awakens and begins to show signs of recovery. Could he be connected to the events and will the police identify the killer before he can strike again?

triple j’s One Night Stand

image

Sunday 2 September at 9:30pm

This year triple j’s One Night Stand concert comes to you from the Tasmanian town of St Helens.

Hosted by triple j Mornings presenter Linda Marigliano, One Night Stand features live performances from Vance Joy, Peking Duk, Tkay Maidza, Middle Kids and Alex the Astronaut, as well a bunch of special guests. One Night Stand will screen as a 90-minute special, the day after the concert, 9:30pm Sunday 2 September on ABC and ABC iview.

triple j’s annual free, all ages concert provides the chance to experience live music in an area that’s not on the usual musical touring map. It’s also a chance for the rest of Australia to get to know a special part of the country and this year it’s the Tasmanian town of St Helens’ turn to shine. triple j will be live broadcasting the concert live from 12pm on Saturday 1 September, and throughout the broadcast you’ll get to know some local legends who’ll be putting their town on the map.

As part of this, thanks to triple j Unearthed, you’ll be able to check out local Launceston band The Sleepyheads as they open up the One Night Stand concert with their positive punk rock and clever lyrics. They’ve already played some killer shows, having previously supported Dune Rats and Tired Lion and appeared at festivals like Falls and Party In The Paddock so you can expect a big early crowd for these Tassie heroes. Having previously collaborated on a song together, they also count a certain high-profile St Helens band as mates, which has us wondering whether they might bring up a special guest?

The Sleepyheads join some of the biggest artists in the country right now, taking to the same stage as Vance Joy, Peking Duk, Tkay Maidza, Middle Kids and Alex the Astronaut. Vance Joy hardly needs an introduction, having won over the world since his mega-hit ‘Riptide’ took out #1 in 2013’s Hottest 100. Electronic duo Peking Duk, also fan faves, scored not one but two spots in last year’s Hottest 100.

EXPOSED: The Case of Keli Lane

image

From Tuesday 25 September at 8:30pm

image

EX. MURDER. SECRETS. LIES.

A missing baby. Her mother behind bars.

Award-winning journalist Caro Meldrum-Hanna in her most gripping investigation yet.

In this ground-breaking three-part television event, EXPOSED: The Case of Keli Lane , Caro Meldrum-Hanna investigates one of Australia’s most notorious crimes: the disappearance of two-day old Tegan Lane and the conviction of her mother Keli Lane of her murder.

Will Keli finally break her silence?

What happened to baby Tegan?

In December 2010 Keli Lane was found guilty of murdering her newborn daughter Tegan. During the entirely circumstantial case, the prosecution argued Keli killed Tegan because having a child would interfere with her goal to play water polo for Australia at the 2000 Olympic Games.

Over the years Keli has steadfastly maintained her innocence, sticking to her story that after concealing her pregnancy from everybody, she had given Tegan to the baby’s father – a man named Andrew Norris, who has never been found.

Now, 22 years after Tegan vanished, Keli has asked Caro to investigate her story.

Assisted by investigative journalist Elise Worthington, Caro sets out to shed new light on the mystery of Tegan’s disappearance. What dark secrets is Keli keeping? Is Tegan dead - or could she be alive? Was Keli’s trial a miscarriage of justice?

Caro and Elise revisit key people in Keli’s life and track down new witnesses, revealing information and material that has never been found. As the journalists piece together the puzzle of Keli Lane’s life, a different picture of her begins to emerge.

As the series hurtles towards its suspenseful conclusion, Caro becomes a character in her own search for the truth.

EXPOSED: The Case of Keli Lane, airs across three Tuesday nights from 8.30pm 25 September on ABC and iview.

As of today ABC has dropped Pointless from its schedule and will be airing Season 9 of Dr Who in its place.

Is this because Pointless Australia has caused brand damage to the original series?

Not sure. Yesterday they played the last episode of season 9. They usually cycle between seasons 8-10. I don’t see how it could have caused damage given the original is so much better.

Apparently this will be part of ABC’s coverage of Ausmusic Month

Tick F***ing Tock

image

From Tuesday 2 October 9.30pm

The Doug Anthony Allstars were comedy superstars, until Tim Ferguson unexpectedly pulled the plug, breaking the hearts of Paul McDermott and Richard Fidler. Years later they discovered Tim had Multiple Sclerosis (MS), and put aside their differences to re-unite and live the glory days again.

This two-part series, Tick F***ing Tock, chronicles the story of the bad boys of Australian comedy - for the first time they confront how Tim’s MS has impacted on their friendships at each step to international stardom.

The Allstars began as buskers in the mid-1980s and were soon the toast of the Adelaide comedy festival. Finding it hard to break into the local Australian comedy scene, they easily found success in the UK: sell-out shows at the Edinburgh comedy festivals, weekly appearances on all the TV channels, and regular tours to packed theatres.

But in 1994 Tim called it quits and the group broke up. Paul and Richard were devastated, with the Allstars on the verge of true international success.

Since his late teens Tim had experienced random symptoms – crossed eyes, tingling, numbness– that were finally diagnosed as MS a year after the Allstars ended. He was 32.

In 2003 the Allstars re-united to perform at a benefit concert – still Richard and Paul had no idea about Tim’s MS. They eventually found out - 12 years after the group broke up.

In the second episode, the Allstars reform as the cripple (Tim Ferguson now in a wheelchair), the superstar (Paul McDermott) and the pensioner (Paul Livingston who replaced Richard). And once again, they quickly find success.
