ABC TV - Programs and Schedules

Wow, this must’ve really hurt the ABC to organise different schedules for many nights running instead of the usual serve the one program to everyone and too bad approach they’ve taken since the 90’s.

There is a background to the watermark tonight on ch2.

The Living Universe

image

From Tuesday 14 August at 9:30pm

The new space race has begun. The Living Universe brings to life the epic future journey of an autonomous spacecraft to a planet far beyond our Solar System, in search of alien life. We meet the greatest minds of today in the fields of space exploration, planetary science and astrobiology as they confront the overwhelming challenges that this future interstellar mission presents, driven by a need to solve the oldest human mystery: are we alone?

Just 25 years ago, the universe was changed forever. The discovery of the first exoplanet - a planet orbiting a star other than our sun - revolutionised astronomy. Since then we’ve learnt that every single star in the sky hosts at least one planet. And as many of a quarter of them could have the right conditions for life. There are literally billions of new worlds out there for us to explore within our own milky way. Could one of them host life?

The Living Universe brings to life, in breathtaking CGI, an epic future journey that our species has already begun: the voyage of an autonomous spacecraft to a planet beyond our Solar System in search of life. Join NASA planetary explorers Gentry Lee and Steve Squyres; and exo-planet hunters Sara Seager, Francois Forget and Natalie Batalha on their quest to find life beyond Earth.

Production details: A 4 x 1 hr documentary series. An Essential Media and Entertainment and Zed coproduction. Financed in association with Screen Australia and Create NSW.

Who Killed Belinda Peisley?

image

Tuesday 7 August at 9:30pm

In 1998, 19 year old mother of two Belinda Peisley went missing in the Blue Mountains town of Katoomba. She has not contacted her children, her parents, her aunt or any of her friends since her disappearance. Inexplicably, police did not report her disappearance to the Coroner for eight years.

As the inquest into Belinda’s disappearance finally gets underway in 2012, a striking cast of characters appear to give evidence, most linked to the drug culture prevalent in Katoomba. The long interval that has passed and the damage that drug addiction has caused present huge challenges. Much of the evidence has gone cold and the Coroner can have no certainty as to the veracity of the evidence he hears.

Investigative documentary-maker Helen Barrow has followed the case for over seven years, taking her cameras into the homes and lives of Belinda’s family, neighbours, friends, witnesses and persons of interest, and into the courtroom each day of the inquest, to follow Belinda’s story.

As the Coroner handed down his finding that Belinda died in or around Katoomba, of unknown cause, this compelling and shocking new documentary asks Who Killed Belinda Peisley? The 59-minute documentary is a grippy courtroom drama and investigation into the culture of a community who to this day harbour dark secrets about Belinda’s disappearance.

The documentary’s release is timed to coincide with National Missing Persons Week (Aug 5-11).

The six extra chapters released on ABC iview take the viewer deeper into the events through unique themed bonus episodes that raise important questions about a town, an inquest, the ripple effect on friends and family of an unsolved homicide; while also shining a spotlight on those who are missing presumed dead in our society.

Fear & Memory: Time passing and drug use clearly impact on the memories of witnesses but just as clearly so does a sense of menace in the courtroom.

Small Town Secrets: Hearsay and rumour obscures the truth at the inquest into the disappearance of Belinda Peisley and dark and isolated Katoomba keeps her secrets.

Belle: She inherited money but mental health issues caused by absent father and bipolar mother saw the animal loving attractive teenager Belinda become a drug addict.

The Ripple Effect: No body, no grieving, no funeral. Belinda Peisley’s family still suffers today. The Families and Friends of Missing Persons Unit helps families process their pain.

The Inquest: The inquest into Belinda’s disappearance focuses on three persons of interest that raise suspicions sufficient for the Coroner to refer the case to Unsolved Homicide Unit.

Finding the Missing: Belinda Peisley is one of Australia’s 2600 missing long-term persons that the AFP forensic unit use age progressing techniques to try and find.

The entire collection (one hour and extra chapters) are also available at the ABC True Crime website, home of the Unravel podcast. Find it here: abc.net.au/truecrime

Loch Ness

image

From Thursday 30 August at 8:50pm

Beneath the waters of Loch Ness, we see the pigment bleached body of an unidentified middleaged man, curling stones tied to his ankles.

On her day off, Det Sergeant Annie Redford (Laura Fraser) is called upon by her boss DCI Frank Smilie (John Sessions) to clear up a gory prank, which reporters are claiming with tongue in cheek, to be the washed-up remains of the Loch Ness Monster. Annie, with a raging hangover, heads to the lochside where the inexperienced PC Jason Denny (Murray Fraser) helps her clear up the decaying animal entrails. Among the remains Jason finds a heart, which he bags.

Meanwhile, piano teacher Niall Swift (Jordan McCurrach) is sacked by widower Dr Marr (John Heffenan), for giving his daughter inappropriate music. When Swift accuses Marr of hypocrisy an argument ensues. Shortly afterwards Swift receives a text from someone who wants to meet him at a local beauty spot. A couple of hours later we see college principal, Craig Petrie (Alastair MacKenzie), in full running gear, standing over Swift’s twisted, broken, blooded body as it lies at the foot of a cliff. Before Petrie calls for help, he pockets Swift’s phone.

The pathologist ascertains that Swift was murdered and a sliver of his brain was removed. DCI Lauren Quigley (Siobhan Finneran) is seconded to the case to head up the investigation and is later joined by forensic psychologist Blake Albrighton (Don Gilet), whom she drafts in, much to Smilie’s dismay. Annie shows Quigley the spot where Swift was killed and finds a newspaper from the day of the murder in a gully nearby.

The investigation is further complicated when the heart Jason found among the animal remains turns out to be human. The teenagers responsible for the prank, Jonjo (Keiran Gallacher), Kieran (Jack Bannon) and Annie’s daughter Evie (Shona McHugh), are brought in for questioning, and Annie, now compromised, is off the case, causing tensions at home.

Elsewhere, we meet Kieran’s brother Jordan (Oliver Greenall), a young man with locked-in syndrome who awakens and begins to show signs of recovery. Could he be connected to the events and will the police identify the killer before he can strike again?

triple j’s One Night Stand

image

Sunday 2 September at 9:30pm

This year triple j’s One Night Stand concert comes to you from the Tasmanian town of St Helens.

Hosted by triple j Mornings presenter Linda Marigliano, One Night Stand features live performances from Vance Joy, Peking Duk, Tkay Maidza, Middle Kids and Alex the Astronaut, as well a bunch of special guests. One Night Stand will screen as a 90-minute special, the day after the concert, 9:30pm Sunday 2 September on ABC and ABC iview.

triple j’s annual free, all ages concert provides the chance to experience live music in an area that’s not on the usual musical touring map. It’s also a chance for the rest of Australia to get to know a special part of the country and this year it’s the Tasmanian town of St Helens’ turn to shine. triple j will be live broadcasting the concert live from 12pm on Saturday 1 September, and throughout the broadcast you’ll get to know some local legends who’ll be putting their town on the map.

As part of this, thanks to triple j Unearthed, you’ll be able to check out local Launceston band The Sleepyheads as they open up the One Night Stand concert with their positive punk rock and clever lyrics. They’ve already played some killer shows, having previously supported Dune Rats and Tired Lion and appeared at festivals like Falls and Party In The Paddock so you can expect a big early crowd for these Tassie heroes. Having previously collaborated on a song together, they also count a certain high-profile St Helens band as mates, which has us wondering whether they might bring up a special guest?

The Sleepyheads join some of the biggest artists in the country right now, taking to the same stage as Vance Joy, Peking Duk, Tkay Maidza, Middle Kids and Alex the Astronaut. Vance Joy hardly needs an introduction, having won over the world since his mega-hit ‘Riptide’ took out #1 in 2013’s Hottest 100. Electronic duo Peking Duk, also fan faves, scored not one but two spots in last year’s Hottest 100.
