Starring an outstanding line up of Australian talent, headlined by Damon Herriman, Kate Box, Xavier Samuel and Jessica de Gouw, Riot shines a spotlight on Australia’s 1970s Gay Rights Movement and the passionate individuals who were unwavering in their fight for decriminalisation, recognition and equality.
Based on real people and real events, Riot is a powerful and moving telemovie reflecting an important chapter in Australia’s LGBTQ history. It explores the origins of the activism that led to Australia’s most famous street parade.
Lance Gowland (Damon Herriman) is a devoted activist, steadfast and dedicated to actively fighting for his beliefs while juggling family, work and relationships. With the system against them and ever-present adversity, including police brutality, legislative persecution, social shunning, job dismissal and general violence, Gowland and his fellow activists decide to come out fighting in their celebration of diversity.
Over the years, their resolve is tested, and by 1978, when the push to decriminalize homosexuality has seemingly stalled, they decide on a new tactic of a celebratory mardi gras in hopes of garnering wider public support.
Securing a permit for a legal protest, on the evening of June 24, in recognition of Gay Solidarity Day, a small but passionate group collect behind a truck driven by Lance, to stage a street party and joyfully declare their pride. The night will be marked by great violence, but the ramifications will pave the way for equality, and the establishment of a world-renowned parade that continues to celebrate the spirit of these brave, pioneering men and women.

ABC’s main channel will have a one-hour highlights of this year’s Golden Guitar Awards from Tamworth this Sunday (January 28) at 12.30pm. The entire ceremony will be streamed live on ABC Landline’s Facebook page this Saturday from 7.30pm AEDT. In previous years the country music awards have been shown on WIN and/or Southern Cross Ten.

The brand-new series of Grand Designs is as engaging and entertaining as ever.
This series starts with an ambitious upside-down, New Zealand-inspired hill house clinging to a steep slope in Worcestershire – built by a couple who bought the plot on the internet without seeing it first. To follow there’s an innovative Tardis-like, space-saving home squeezed into a tiny corner of East London devised by a young inventor. There’s a unique horseshoe-shaped retro courtyard house on the ancient grounds of an abbey in Hertfordshire, and a giant ground-breaking shed-inspired barn for a young family in County Down.
In North London there’s a reconstructed old lodge melded to a giant black cube of a house for two neurologists. On the edge of a beautiful village in the Peak District National Park is a super-eco hidden house buried in a slope, and in South London a derelict old dairy is transformed into an ultra-chic family home. And then there’s the swirling snakeskin-roofed super-house nestling in the Blackdown Hills of Devon, inspired by an ammonite shell.
Kevin McCloud is there to share the emotional highs and lows of those willing to put everything on the line to create homes they hope will transform their lives forever.

The Royal Commission has called into question the Catholic version of confession and research shows it’s a practice with a pre-Christian history. Today, divulging your innermost secrets to a therapist is a form of confession and confession is the cornerstone of a criminal admission of guilt.

Andrew Spiteri explains “there’s so many distractions in this world that we don’t often take the time to really listen to others or listen to ourselves and I think urban confessional teaches people to do that”
Writer Ailsa Piper shares her story on carrying the sins of others, as she trekked across Spain. Walking with the sins of others she understood the need for absolution and forgiveness. “I believe deeply in confession. I think it is us at our most vulnerable if we do it with an open heart and a deep need. I think it’s also when I perceive people to be their most beautiful.”
Catholic priest Michael Whelan feels a deep responsibility in hearing confession and sharing the pain of his
parishioners. “I think human beings respond to an empathic listener, someone who’s not trying to take advantage of them, someone who takes them seriously in their situation.”

Welcome aboard Sammy J, a brand-new weekly bite-sized satirical sketch series to broadcast on ABC at 6.55pm starting Thursday 8 February. Sammy J will also be available on ABC iview, ABC iview Facebook and ABC COMEDY YouTube.
Multi award-nominated comedian Sammy J is making his boldest pitch yet to the electorate: a three-minute frolic through the issues of the week. From craft activities with Malcolm and Bill, Question Time debriefs with the Government Coach, to singalongs in the Parliamentary Bar, Mr J will continue to flog our leaders with wet lettuce until they refer him to the High Court.
Sammy J’s unique comedic talents, satire, and his insatiable appetite for politics will blend with the successful characters and ‘small worlds’ of his previous two series, Sammy J’s Playground Politics and Sammy J’s Democratic Party, to create a new platform from which he can harass and heckle the politicians of the day.
Sammy J said; “In the words of Julia Gillard - there will be some days I delight you, there may be some days I disappoint you, but on every day, I will be working my absolute hardest for you. Thank you for inviting me into your living rooms, and I promise to clean up after myself.”
Sammy J is an award-winning comedian, writer and musician. He won the Best Newcomer award at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and went on to performed in Edinburgh, Montreal, and every major Australian comedy festival. His album Skinny Man, Modern World received an ARIA nomination for Best Comedy Release. His current solo show, Hero Complex, won Best Comedy at the Melbourne Fringe Festival and was nominated for a Helpmann Award in 2017.
