###Compass - New Directions

Compass, ABC’s weekly ethics and religion program, returns 6pm March 4 in a new Saturday timeslot when Geraldine Doogue passes the baton to new Compass presenter Kumi Taguchi in an interview about her life and work, revealing why Kumi is the perfect person for the job. In addition to this new role, Kumi continues as news anchor on ABC News 24.

But Geraldine is not stepping back completely and will continue to host specials throughout the year including Modern Prophets, an interview series with a refreshing perspective on key events in the religious and secular calendar and a powerful special exploring the potential outcomes of the Royal Commission.

Geraldine Doogue, said; “I am genuinely thrilled to welcome Kumi Taguchi to the Compass presenting chair, which I’ve happily filled for just on 20 years and has never been more important, given the world’s turbulence. But there are times to renew and re-direct energies and I think this is one of them, personally and for the program. I’ll produce some specials throughout the year because I’m passionate about ABC viewers knowing the big issues of belief and faith and hope to be satisfying that appetite among Australians for years to come.”

Kumi Taguchi, said: “The search for meaning is what drives me: figuring out why I am here, why we are here, what we can do during this short time on our planet. A huge part of this is telling the stories of others, looking at the journeys they’ve taken and learning from their experience and wisdom. Being able to ask and explore life’s important questions makes working at Compass a dream come true.”

Other highlights of the upcoming Compass season include: Jane Caro’s return with The Staffroom a series that gets inside the heads of our teachers, and Natasha Mitchell presents Ethically Challenged where two families attempt to redefine the way they live.

In this 500th anniversary year of the formation of the Lutheran Church, Martin Luther - An Idea That Changed the World is a compelling documentary that brings alive the powerful personalities and exciting drama of the Reformation. Love Marriage in Kabul follows the extraordinary quest of Afghan-Australian Mahboba Rawi, as she negotiates and challenges old traditions to make a marriage for love happen.

In other highlights, Speed Date a Muslim sees a fiery host invite people to ask Muslim women the hard questions, Love in a Hurry explores the tricky business of having relationships with a life limiting illness, and in Power to the People Kumi introduces an immersive look at social issues that defined Australian society over the last forty years.

###Broadchurch Season 3 (final series)

Arthur Darvill also returns as local Vicar Paul Coates, Carolyn Pickles as newspaper editor Maggie Radcliffe and Adam Wilson as Ellie’s son Tom.

Creator Chris Chibnall has once again written all eight episodes of the drama which was filmed on location in the now familiar Broadchurch locations of Bridport, West Bay and Clevedon.

###Luther Season 4

Craig Reucassel has a new series coming to ABC in May.

[quote] War on Waste, his new three-part ABC series, set to debut in May. Loosely based on a BBC program, it focuses on food, fashion, plastic, recycling and coffee cup waste. Topics chosen not in Aunty’s boardrooms, but the depths of suburban wheelie bins.

I know the Tram Driver that drove that tram, but not that well.

But I wonder what date it’s going to air in May?

Oh I was wondering what he was up to when he ambushed Gladys Berejiklian the other day. It didn’t seem like something related to the Checkout.

Seeing that Gogglebox did a review on “Hugh’s War on Waste” and they showed the coffee cup story, this show looks exactly like that show.

###The Halcyon

From Saturday 1 April at 8:15pm

The Halcyon is the story of a bustling and glamorous five-star hotel at the centre of London society and a world at war. Set in 1940, the series shows London life through the prism of war and the impact it has on families, politics, relationships and work across every social strata - set to a soundtrack of the music of the era.

Episode one (or eight) sees the arrival at the Halcyon hotel of a mysterious and handsome American, Joe O’Hara
(Matt Ryan), who while checking in, queries a line of smart black cars snaking their way around the back of the hotel. Meanwhile, the owner, Lord Hamilton (Alex Jennings) arrives with Charity Lambert (Charity Wakefield) a young glamorous blonde on his arm, and several upper class and white haired men in tow. He’s hosting a meeting of Lords, MPs and influencers who are plotting how to instate Halifax as PM… bit it’s clear that the room contains more than its fair share of appeasers and Nazi sympathisers.

###Silent Witness - Series 19

From Friday 7 April at 9:20pm

Emilia Fox, Richard Lintern and David Caves return in this award-winning crime drama which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2016. Dr Nikki Alexander (Fox), Dr Thomas Chamberlain (Lintern) and Dr Jack Hodgson (Caves) form a dedicated team of forensic pathologists whose job it is to work out how and why the victim died.

This series sees Nikki (Fox) investigate a murder that’s a carbon copy of a case from her past, but who will believe her as she soon suspects that the killings are personal to her. Jack creates tension when he finds himself aligned with a police complaints investigator over the accidental shooting of a girl by armed police. And a seemingly random killing in the remote countryside leads Nikki and Jack into the dangerous underbelly of a criminal world.

In episode one, the apparent suicide of a DJ leads Nikki to question her judgement on a strikingly similar case from her past. The similarities between the cases reveal that a copycat killer is out there - someone who is forensically aware and possibly medically trained. As further comparisons appear between the murders and Nikki’s past, she soon suspects that the killings are personal.

Meanwhile Tony, a family man recently released from prison for an attempted murder he supposedly didn’t commit, struggles to come to terms with his new life. The links between Tony’s incarceration and Nikki’s past become apparent as she goes in search of an old rival who may hold the answers to the current murders.

###Michael Mosley’s Secrets of Your Food

From Tuesday 11 April at 8:00pm

From the makers of Human Universe and 9 Months That Made You, comes the definitive guide to the food on your plate. Seen at a microscopic level, your food resembles a vast range of strange and beautiful landscapes, which transform in mouth-watering ways as you cook.

Michael Mosley and James Wong reveal the delicious physics, chemistry and biology hidden inside our food. They travel the world in a culinary adventure to search for the origins of our favourite foods and using specialist photography and CGI, they take us on a journey inside the most sumptuous food, right down to the molecular level.

This landmark series uncovers a secret world of exquisite chemical reactions. Each fizz and tickle of the tongue is captured so clearly you can almost taste it. This is the untold story of your next mouthful, where delicious is in the detail.

In the opening episode, We Are What We Eat, they explore how this chemistry fuels and builds our bodies. Michael begins by trying the first meal most of us enjoyed, human breast milk, which contains everything a baby needs - fats, carbs, vitamins and minerals. As we grow, we continue to seek the same chemistry in our diet but as Michael and James discover, from a wide variety of scrumptious fare.

In San Francisco, they unravel why sourdough bread is so good for us; in the Philippines, they learn how a river weed - rice - has become a comforting staple food, and in Bulgaria, they discover why letting your mushrooms sunbathe may help you get a calcium boost from your dairy food.

ABC’s April promo is using the new ABC look.
