Restoration Australia - Season 3

Across eight new episodes SERIES 3 of Restoration Australia will see host, architect and historian Stuart Harrison take viewers on a journey meeting some of Australia’s bravest heritage warriors as they transform tumble down ruins into their remarkable historic homes.

From a Federation rambler in country NSW, to a massive, but derelict Baptist Church in Ballarat… a beautiful old Queenslander in the Noosa hinterland that was cut up and bought for $21,000, to a grand inner city terrace under the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the series follows the homeowners as the embark on the massive tasks of restoring their old homes.

But the vision of re-creating the houses to turn them into ‘forever’ homes isn’t simple.

To faithfully restore with original fixtures and fittings, they first must replace termite damaged floors, water damaged walls, and rotten ceilings. Some homes don’t even have all four walls or a front door – in fact, one has been lying flat- packed on a bush block for decades waiting to be reassembled and brought back to life.

It is Stuart’s job to help the homeowners on the journey, not only investigating their homes’ historic past but also providing advice, support, and insight into the restoration process. With often tight budgets and limited timeframes the challenge is to help them protect the past while creating beautiful and functional homes for the present without compromising what they fell in love with in the first place.

What sort of world do we want to live in and who should be allowed to live in it? With prenatal screening we get to choose who is born, so what do we value in making that decision?

As pre-natal testing becomes more sophisticated there has been an increase in the number of terminations after receiving an abnormal result. This has led to questions about the efficacy of the screening and the support and information given to women and couples deciding whether to continue with the pregnancy.

As a woman living with Down Syndrome presenter Julia Hales is challenging people to value her community and the diversity it brings.

As the shift in public funding moves from caring for those with disabilities to preventing their birth in the first place,Julia meets doctors, pregnant woman, parents and those within the Down Syndrome community to confront the fears, health concerns and reality of living with Down Syndrome.

Searching for Superhuman

What makes us human? What hidden powers lie in the bodies of those who live longer, healthier lives? How can we grow faster, stronger, smarter? Is there a way to delay ageing? For millennia, humans have searched the heavens and Earth for answers, but in the last thirty years science has begun to unravel those most elusive secrets. The pace of discovery has been breathtaking.

In six, one-hour documentaries presented by Dr Shalin Naik, drawing from the rich film archives of the ustralian Broadcasting Corporation, Searching For Superhuman chronicles the incredible scientific dvances that have changed the way we understand ourselves and our biological destiny.

Kicking off with the most ambitious biological research project in history, the race to decode the human genome, the series examines the genetic revolution that came from sequencing the three billion letters of our DNA- and how it changed our outlook on health and disease. Technologies from the Human Genome Project opened up new fields of science, including the recent explosion of research into our gut microbiome with profound implications for our western diet and chronic new ailments. Surgery also experienced a transformation, with new technologies and interventions that allowed scientists to tinker with our cellular function and study life at the nano-scale.

At the same time, neuroscience developed new ways to explore the living brain, eavesdropping on electrical messaging, spying on growth and development, overturning concepts of the static adult brain. With a powerful new understanding of brain plasticity, scientists gained critical new insights into improving memory and learning, the importance of sleep and childhood enrichment.

For the disabled, scientific progress has been astonishing. With advanced new prosthetics, amputees are giving able-bodied athletes a run for their money and brain-directed bionic limbs are giving tetraplegics greater degrees of freedom. Everything from freshly built organs, to synthetic muscles promise a stronger, brighter future for those of us struck down by disease.

As scientists found new ways to extend and improve life, they also found ways to create it, bringing the moment of conception from the womb to the laboratory and developing a raft of reproductive technologies to overcome fertility problems and monitor the life of the unborn.

What was once seen as inevitable, the process of ageing, is now also under review, as scientists achieve remarkable results in laboratory experiments, extending health span, increasing lifespan and reversing signs of decay in animals. Are we finally within reach of the magical elixir of youth?

Brock: Over the Top

The name Peter Brock is not only synonymous with Australian Motor Sport, but one that holds a place of reverence in many Australian households. In a career that spanned over 30 years, including nine first place finishes in the Bathurst 1000, Peter Brock, also known as “Peter Perfect”, “The King of the Mountain”, or simply “Brocky”, is an Australian sporting icon with a compelling life story.

Brock: Over the Top is a feature length documentary that not only chronicles the extraordinary life of Peter Brock but peels away the surface to reveal the profoundly human story behind the legend. This film is a thrilling, yet intimately personal portrait of a life lived on the racing track and in the public eye.

Using a treasure trove of rare archival material coupled with candid interviews with key people in Peter Brock’s life including his family, his partners, and closest colleagues, this film tells the epic story of Brock’s early obsession with cars, his hard won ascension to the top, and his various professional and personal controversies.
With back-to-back Bathurst wins in the 1970s and early 1980s, Brock was a dominant force on and off the track, but throughout his career he faced intense media scrutiny. This included his brief but turbulent relationship with former Miss Australia Michelle Downes resulting in allegations of domestic violence and his firing from the Holden Dealer Team by Harry Firth; the installation of the controversial ‘Energy Polariser’ in his HDT cars and subsequent fallout with long-time investor and racing partner, Holden.

In the face of all this controversy, and despite a slew of financial setbacks, Brock continued to dominate motorsports, including in 1987, when he secured a record- breaking 9th Bathurst win. Eventually Brock was welcomed back into Holden fold in the early 1990s as a driver in the Holden Racing Team and continued to be a fan favourite on the track until his official retirement from motorsports in 1997.

Fascination with Brock continued right up to his untimely death in 2006. A lifelong campaigner for motor vehicle safety, it was behind the wheel at an obscure Western Australian racing event where tragedy struck. A nation was left shocked at the loss of the racing icon. Brock’s life was one big race that he never stopped running until it finally killed him.

Brock: Over The Top is a high-octane documentary, celebrating and interrogating the fascinating life story of one of Australia’s most legendary sportsmen, whose legacy remains unsurpassed even to this day.

ABC is the home of legendary sports stories this November

Over four consecutive weeks on Tuesday nights, ABC TV + iview will broadcast a collection of sports documentaries following iconic Australian stories.

Featuring sporting legends Peter Brock, Steve Waugh and Wayne Gardner, plus the little-known story of the first all Indigenous cricket team to tour the UK.

On Tuesday, November 3, 8.30pm the first across the line is Brock: Over the Top . This feature film chronicles the extraordinary life of Australia’s greatest racing car driver, Peter Brock, peeling away the surface to reveal the complicated human story behind the legend.

Using a treasure trove of rare archival material coupled with candid interviews with the key characters in Peter Brock’s life including his family, his partners, and closest colleagues, this film tells the epic story of Brock’s early obsession with cars, his hard won ascension to the top in an incredible run of record-breaking victories at Bathurst, and how his success played out against the backdrop of professional and personal controversies until his ultimate, tragic death on the race track in 2006.

On Tuesday, November 10, 8.30pm Walkabout Wickets follows the 2018 National Indigenous Cricket Team on their tour of the UK, delving into the deep connection these young Australians have to the game, and the group of Aboriginal cricketers who blazed a trail 150 years earlier.

On Tuesday, November 17, 8.30pm the ‘Iceman’ cometh in Capturing Cricket: Steve Waugh in India . Steve Waugh, the mastermind behind Australia’s golden age of cricket, has never forgotten his first international tour: India, 1986. Over 30 years and hundreds of cricket tours later, Steve is heading back to take on a new challenge. Flanked by a mentor, Magnum photographer Trent Parke, and good friend Jason Brooks, Steve trails the country with his camera in hand, hoping to capture India’s love of cricket.

Crafted from candid, observational footage from the trip and with additional interviews – including Indian cricket stars Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid, Australian cricket legends Adam Gilchrist and Lisa Sthalekar, plus former AFL footballer Adam Goodes – Capturing Cricket: Steve Waugh in India explores Steve’s relationship with cricket and uncovers why India means so much to one of the world’s most revered cricketers.

The high-octane documentary WAYNE will roar onto ABC on Tuesday, November 24, 8.30pm.

From Wollongong to Phillip Island via Monte Carlo, Wayne Gardner – The Wollongong Whiz – conquered the world of motorcycle racing and came home a hero. In a film that charts his humble start in the 1960s with a $5 motorbike, to becoming the 1987 Motorcycle World Champion, WAYNE explores the life of a fearless racing competitor who helped define motorcycle racing both at home and abroad. This is also the story of the woman by his side; childhood sweetheart Donna and the life they carved out together.

This collection of iconic documentaries will be presented as a special Sports collection on iview alongside encore screenings of The Australian Dream and FREEMAN.
