The Great Acceleration

image

From Tuesday 18 August at 9.30pm

Presented by Dr Shalin Naik, The Great Acceleration is a remarkable new science series where the ABC delves into its extensive archive to bring audiences the story of one of the most dramatic chapters of human history.

The Great Acceleration is a term coined by scientists, in an effort to describe the most rapid period of change in human and planetary history. In the last fifty years humankind has achieved astounding heights of discovery and exploration while reaching a pace of consumption that threatens the very fabric of our existence.

Across six one-hour episodes, the series examines major advances in the fields of space exploration, computing, energy, resources, Earth science and our understanding of the evolution of life itself. With expert commentary from scientists at the top of their field, such as geneticist Craig Venter and Nobel Prize winner Barry Barish, we hear firsthand accounts about some of the biggest moments in science, like the discovery of dark energy and gravitational waves, the creation of a new synthetic species and innovative solutions that may save the future of human civilisation.

The first episode explores the ambitious space shuttle mission which began in the 70s and facilitated some of the most important and memorable discoveries and breakthroughs of our time. It also investigates an event that took place earlier this year, where scientists (including Elon Musk) and members of NASA met to discuss the future colonisation of Mars.

Don’t miss the premiere of The Great Acceleration, as it’s an unmissable account of our extraordinary changing world and how new innovations can guide us into a more sustainable future.

The Accident - Series 1

image

From Friday 4 September at 9:30pm

In a community in Wales that has been left behind, a large construction project offers hope for a better future. But that future disappears when a local politician’s rebellious daughter and her friends break into the site. An explosion causes the building to collapse, killing everyone but her.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, grief quickly turns to anger. Unwilling to accept that their children were to blame, the families cry for justice. And as the gears of justice slowly turn, challenging truths begin to emerge. When the spotlight shifts onto one of the town’s own sons, the community threatens to tear itself apart.

It falls to the Council Leader’s long-suffering wife, now caring for a daughter with a lifelong disability, to hold the community together. And as those in charge fail to deliver closure for the town, it is up to her to lead them on the march for justice, no matter what the cost.

Episode 1

Polly Bevan is a devoted mother and loyal wife to local politician and leader of Glyngolau Council, Iwan. Disaster strikes their town when a construction site collapses, killing a group of children. Only Polly’s daughter, Leona, survives. The town, including Polly’s close friends Angela, Greta and Debbie, mourn the deaths of loved ones. Polly directs her anger at the Kallbridge Development’s project’s leader, slick executive Harriet Paulsen. But as the dust settles Polly’s shocked to realise it might be Leona who gets the blame.

Just then during the halftime break in the soccer there was an ad for a boxing match on Main Event. The ABC should be charging Foxtel for these illegal commercials.

Well spotted.

I am surprised that they let through that ad for the boxing on main event.

But with the tv ratings currently for the A-League not being that good, not many would have seen it anyway :stuck_out_tongue:

From Sunday 6 September at 8:40pm

Episode 3

The Deddington’s thriving bee Empire has put Granville Norton on the map, but what lengths will they go to to ensure they’re never dethroned…

Beautiful manor house, Apley Court, on the edge of the village of Granville Norton is home to historic hives that produce ‘Apley Gold’ honey, a valuable top of the range honey. Bee obsessive Lord of the manor Ambrose Deddington, the eighth generation of honey producers at Apley Court, is a survivor of a life-threatening cancer, for which he cites a combination of Apley Gold and bee venom from his famous bees as his saviour. And with the unyielding support of his sister Tamara, his faith in its extraordinary healing power has brought Ambrose success, wealth and a dedicated following of Apitherapy devotees.

For years now Ambrose has maintained his status as top dog of the village, with his wealth and aristocratic title ensuring his position. But that position comes under threat when he and his precious hives are attacked by a masked assailant.

Watched The Sound for the first time tonight and quite enjoyed it. Didn’t know some of the artists featured but all the performances were excellent.

ABC and TVNZ have co-commissioned Countdown to Disaster: White Island Eruption. The hour-long special examines the days, minutes, and seconds leading up to the 2019 explosion at the volcano at White Island, New Zealand, that killed 21 people through the eyes of survivors, rescue workers and the scientists who have been studying the volcano for years. It will be produced by EQ Media Group, formerly Essential Media and Entertainment.
